Delon Wright agrees to one-year minimum with Bucks

Miami Heat free agent guard Delon Wright has signed a one-year minimum with the Milwaukee Bucks, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was first to report Monday.

Wright, 32, was acquired in mid-February after being bought out by the Washington Wizards last year. He only appeared in 14 games with the Heat, averaging 5.4 points, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals (!) across 20.4 minutes. On a per-75-possession basis, his Heat numbers over the brief sample equated to 9.9 points, 4.9 assists and 2.5 steals.

He shot just 39.4 percent from the floor, but knocked down 36.7 percent of his 2.1 3-point attempts per game and went 81.3 percent from the charity stripe.

With Miami missing Terry Rozier in the postseason, Wright received ample opportunity in four of their five postseason games against Boston. He averaged 8.0 points and 3.0 rebounds throughout the series, including a 17-point performance in Game 1,  canning five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter alone.

Wright was consistently one of Miami’s top point-of-attack defenders when he was on the floor. Now, it could risk losing two of their best in that respective field (outside of Bam Adebayo) if Haywood Highsmith walks on the open market–the former being more integral to their top-10 defense last season.

The Heat have had a point-of-attack problem for several years now. But if we thought was a big problem 2-3 months ago, we may be in for a rude awakening for it could look like next season. Let’s see how the rest of this plays out.

If by some miracle he agrees to the $5.2 to come here that is a game changer. We could still trade someone to define rolls and fits

Reality Czech

You mentioned the Bulls want assets. The Nets have had interest in Herro for a while. Herro to Nets (I don’t know if they have cap space, assuming they do) for whatever assets you can get. Then sign DeRozan directly . Or Bulls s&t DeRozan, he goes to Heat, Herro goes to Nets, Nets assets go to Bulls possibly with a sweetener.

And of course now the Bulls want to do a sign and trade with Lakers once they found out DeMar might leave for free to the Heat. His hometown going to be tough to beat, especially with only $5 mil in hand.

Reality Czech

But as noted earlier, we can offer $30 million a year if we move Herro’s contract. If ability is based in part on availability , he has an outstanding record.

2qbn

DeRozan and Heat officlaly linked. Take that, Lebron!

heat for life

Like our team with healthy players.Need to sign hh,HH and jim could lockdown jb jt og bridges randle pg

2qbn

We signed Pelle Larsson to a contract. I like him a lot. Solid bench add.

2qbn

So the Bulls don’t want to take back salary for a DeRozan trade but they are also looking to trade Lavine. How in the living eff are they going to pull both of those off? Seems rather limiting to only accept expiring deals, unless they are willing to take on 2 years instead of the 3 of DeRozan and whatever is left of Lavine.

I think I have moved to the let’s trade for Cam Johnson boat. lol

2qbn

Let’s welcome Monte Morris and Lonnie Walker to the team.

I wanted to get that out of the way.

2qbn

Swap out Monte for Dennis Smith Jr.

2qbn

For the trade for DeRozan idea. It sounds like the Bulls don’t want to take back salary, so sending Herro doesn’t align with with they want.

  • Having missed out on Thompson, the Lakers shifted their focus to DeMar DeRozanJovan Buha of The Athletic confirms. LeBron James would reportedly be willing to accept a pay cut to accommodate the acquisition of DeRozan, so L.A. could theoretically offer the free agent forward more than the full mid-level exception via a sign-and-trade. But negotiating such a deal would be tricky, since the Bulls will want assets in return and likely won’t be open to taking back much – if any – salary due to their own financial situation.

Hilarious!!!

You can’t hear a silent tank you can only see it

Zac

Is this when we start dreaming about adding Cooper Flagg?

2qbn

Not yet. Soon. Right now we are now moving on from Mitchell to Lavine or Trae. Once those are off the table we start the stupor for Cooper campaign.

HHHFAN4Life

Donovan Bradley Beal Mitchell has signed

2qbn

Yup. I bet we see something today. It could be Highsmith or some random vet.

Bout30man

Another whale has swum away. It’s for the best that at it happened reasonably quickly so that at least we dont get paralyzed waiting around for a player we didn’t have the assets to acquire. Now, hopefully we will get realistic and get something done. Calling Pat, time to get back to work. Even Godfather’s can’t rest on their laurels.

With Mitchell not signing yet, and Herro liking anti-Heat tweets, something cooking 😛

2qbn

I am a bit surprised to not have heard a peep on Caleb or Highsmith with regards to other teams.

Bout30man

I don’t know about you guys, but not too pleased with what has transpired so far. Seems to me all our worst concerns are happening. The only hope is that we still only need one player, but an A- or better two way player, to be competitive. By that, I mean a player of Rozier level ability or preferably better. DeRozan would fit the bill nicely. Need to trade some players but does anyone want Herro, Robinson, Jovic? Will they give up anything of value for them?
We need to do something as we are, without a doubt, not even play-in team right now.

2qbn

Do not trade Jovic, especially for old DeRozan.

We knew there was going top be no big free agent add. Our roster constraints weren’t a mystery. Also, there is weeks and weeks ahead for a potential trade. If they don’t make one then they go in to the season and see what they have and how Jimmy is playing and make a decision by trade deadline.

#SilentTankfor2025Pick 😉

Bout30man

Maybe a silent tank. I am ok with it, if it has to be. We need to get real with some of our players, evaluate them as the league does. The great thing about the NBA is you are only two players away from competition. In our case, one really good one and another solid one. But, the other side of that is every player is vital to our success and must be chosen wisely. You can’t let a player dictate the direction the team goes and you can’t be sentimental about your players and give them more than a fair chance. Yurtseven, a player which many here thought had potential, is probably on his way out of the league. It’s a business, this fielding of a competitive team. Every step is important.

2qbn

Agree on two players away, especially with the new punitive taxes. If a team like Boston or Golden State want to pay it, then be happy as a fan, but most teams will not do it.

If they don’t trade anyone away, and miss the playoffs, they get a pick in a very talented draft. They would be adding to the youth movement and could be back in the mix the following season when some contracts come off the books. This might be the backup plan. The main plan is clearly still involving Mitchell. Until he signs the Heat are going to wait other than locking up MIP Dru Smith lol

2qbn

Forget free agents. We’ll have to watch summer league for internal improvements. This season is definitely the end of the Butler run.

Other than reaching a two-year agreement with Kevin Love, the Heat haven’t done much in terms of their 15-man roster during the first two days of free agency. It’s a product of the team’s salary-cap crunch, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. They don’t have much to offer to outside free agents and new restrictions in the CBA make it harder to pull off a trade. Miami also doesn’t have much draft capital to facilitate those deals.

SunManFromDogBone

DeMar DeRozan is an unrestricted free agent and IS NOT expected to sign an new contract with Chicago. He was previously being projected to sign a team friendly 3 year/$90 million contract.

How about a sign and trade sending DeRozan to Heat for Herro (at the same amount ($93 Million)…if it can be done.

Rozier, DeRozan, Butler, Jovic, Bam,
JRich, Duncan, Jaquez, Love, Ware*
* Hopefully, can be starter by second half of season or playoffs

Works for me.

Reality Czech

That’s exactly what I was referring to earlier when I suggested it be a sign and trade. Chicago has gotten younger. Adding Herro fits. That would be a great trade.

SunManFromDogBone

Absolutely!

If Butler gets his head and health together (and is willing to accept a “team friendly” contract extension), him and DeRozan could finish out their careers in Miami in 3 years. With Ware at center, they could do some real damage in the playoffs.

In 16 seasons, DeRozan has played an average of 69.4 games, per season, and has a 21.2 career scoring average. He has played an average of 76.33 games and has averaged 24.0, 24.5 and 27.9 ppg the past three seasons!!!

2qbn

16 seasons is the reason I would be hesitant on that trade. To me that is a one year move and the only way it pays off is if they win it all. The same reason we don’t want to give Jimmy that huge extension because at his age hew could just fall off a cliff, well it’s the same for me for DeRozan. Of course if it happens I would cheer it on but that could end really ugly lol

Bout30man

That line up would be competitive. We would need Ware to be a player, and there is a good chance of that because his role would not be to contribute beyond solid center play. I am one who thinks Jovic will need to improve tremendously to fill his role. I still think we need someone else, more of a two way player, there. Who knows what we get for Herro, but we can assume, as you have, that he is gone.

vagibugi

Crickets in Miami. Riley, wake up.

ManilaHeat

So…who wants to chip in for Celts sale? Then move them to the west say Vegas? Or Seattle? 😜😆

SunManFromDogBone

Boston Celtics were purchased for $360 million in 2002. The team is now worth $5.12 Billion. Not a bad return. That is fourth highest value in NBA behind Golden State ($8.28 billion), Knicks ($7.43 billion), Lakers ($7.34 billion). Miami is 7th most valuable NBA team ($4.17 billion). The team was purchased for $68 million in 1995.

Reality Czech

Japan?

heat for life

lebron willing to take paycut to get derozan

2qbn

He said it for Klay and Klay said no way. Demar is from L.A. so that alone is a better recruiting pitch than Lebron taking a $2.00 pay cut

2qbn

Dunn signing with Clippers. Might even be for the minimum. I liked him as a defensive bench guard.

Reality Czech

Biggest news of the day for the Heat is they brought back Dru Smith AND gave him the last 2-way. Raises 2 questions. 1) Whyyy? 2) Why give him the last 2-way when Alondes, Swider, and Cain are all better. Heck, even Isaiah Stevens is probably better. I don’t think there was any danger of poaching him.

2qbn

Yeah wtf.

SunManFromDogBone

Maybe they are being considered for vacant roster spots. Didn’t we lose a few (Martin, Highsmith, Bryant, Wright, ORob maybe?).

Last edited 1 day ago by SunManFromDogBone
Reality Czech

Let’s hope so. We’ll see soon enough.

2qbn

I wonder if he would be added to the summer league team. He would probably be a good guy to have with so many new players

DiehardHeatFanSince88

A true head-scratcher.

oregoner

Oh man, I love Dru Smith. I’m really glad to hear he’ll be back.

oregoner

I said it yesterday, and I feel even stronger about it today. The fact that the Heat aren’t landing these guys isn’t the story. The story is that the Heat aren’t even in the conversation.

I haven’t read a single rumor where the Heat are even listed as being one of the potential options. Not even for minimum salary guys like Westbrook or Fultz. It leads me to believe that something else must be happening in the background. Because I’ve seen lots of offseasons where the Heat had no cap room, and I’ve never seen them so quiet.

HHHFAN4Life

Still mad about the offseason of 2010. I’ve been saying this since last year. And after that “league (Miami Heat) memo” that Adam came out with during the lillard noise how many times have players asked to be traded somewhere and the league steps in? Never happened until it’s with Mia

Reality Czech

Excellent point on that last line.

2qbn

Since Mitchell hasn’t officially signed I hope they’re not waiting for him. But yeah no rumors on them about anyone, even Markkanen.

I think they’re going for the silent tank 😉

oregoner

I think they might be working on Mitchell. Maybe working with Utah and San Antonio as part of the Markannan trade. Maybe talking to Brooklyn about Tyler Herro. Maybe still talking to the Rockets about Jimmy Butler. I don’t know what they’re doing. But I can’t imagine they’re just sitting on their hands doing nothing. And if they’re not involved in free agency, I can only hope that means they have a trade brewing.

2qbn

I think this is the case up until Mitchell signs. Once that happens we’ll see them either come to terms with Highsmith or offer someone the $5 million

Reality Czech

Demar DeRozen, come on down!!

2qbn

HA! I don’t think he would play for $5 million. But if he wants to, yes 😉

Reality Czech

I was thinking sign and trade

heat for life

tatum 5yr 314mil wtf .apron where are you

DiehardHeatFanSince88

In 2002 Boston’s current ownership paid $360M for the team. Today they give their top player $314M for 5 yrs and then announce the teams up for sale.

Also, Philadelphia has signed each Embiid, Maxey, and George for 4yrs for over $200M, that’s over $600M on three players.

Those 4 NBA players signed combined for almost one billion dollars while regular folks are having to deal with crazy rising prices for eggs, milk, chicken, gas, etc. etc.

oregoner

The fact that the rich are getting richer while regular people are getting squeezed is not a coincidence

2qbn

Warriors trying to trade for Markkanen. Ainge is going to want a Gobert-like haul I bet.

2qbn

Batum back to the Clippers and Klay to Mavs. Not that we were interested in Klay but we do need these names off the board so it clears up the focus on some of the vets we could possibly sign

heat for life

thats big for dallas.needle mover for sure.

heat for life

Wow that suks.Man dorelle couldnt put in a good word wtf.Liked him alot,Cant score to good but everything else he was good at

2qbn

Anyone for Nic Batum? 😛

Reality Czech

Gordon Hayward at the minimum

2qbn

The Heat have $5 million to offer and then vet minimums. I would be okay with Hayward or Batum at the minimum. But this is what we’re looking at

heat for life

damaged goods and garbage

2qbn

Garbage Batum signed two year for $9 million. The Heat could not even offer that, so get your B&J ready

Reality Czech

And Hayward played pretty well last season. 51 games admittedly a concern but at the minimum, worth a shot if no one else is available. Can shoot the 3, was 41+% last season. Obviously, they would check his health before signing.

heat for life

garbage means below avg player.nick batum aint doing sht for us.cain hh better options

2qbn

Dude, read the room. Nobody was saying go sign Batum. We are discussing possible bargain free agents because that is our reality. Highsmith can get more than $5 million. Cain is not proven. This team can only make a large difference with a trade and not signing free agents.

You all caught up now?

heat for life

russ only got 4.hh should take 5 and be mucho happy.5 million i wont make that in a lifetime

Alondes Williams better be ready because he’s looking like bench PG right now

With Pullin getting seasoned.

#HeatLifer

SunManFromDogBone

Still have Josh.

2qbn

Yup. Since he was out towards the end and Caleb and Highsmith were the two main bench wings, I definitely think Josh takes over for one of them. Definitely need another.
