Thomas Bryant re-signs with the Miami Heat on a one year, vet-minimum deal

Thomas Bryant will now go into year two of his Miami Heat tenure.

Now roughly three full days into NBA Free Agency, big man Thomas Bryant has reportedly re-signed to return to the Miami Heat. As initially reported by Marc Stein and then confirmed by Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang, Bryant will be back on a one-year veteran minimum contract.

Bryant finished the 2023-2024 season with averages of 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds in 11.6 minutes across 38 appearances. He received four spot-starts in games that Bam Adebayo weren’t available. His energy, hustle and locker room personality were valuable to this Heat roster.

By opting out of his contract a few days back, this move actually frees the Heat up of $1 million in cap space. There is now a rotation that includes loaded big man depth, with Adebayo, rookie Kel’el Ware, Kevin Love and Bryant, respectively.

Because of this, it seems less likely that the Heat will guarantee the standard contract of Orlando Robinson. If that’s the case, Robinson will become an unrestricted free agent and Miami will still have three open roster spots.

It could be fair to assume that a back up point guard to replace Delon Wright and at least one of Caleb Martin and/or Haywood Highsmith can fill those spots, barring their free agent decisions. Wright’s unexpected departure to the rival Milwaukee Bucks has raised an urgency on adding another ball handler.

Glad to have him back. Sometimes it seemed like I was alone in wanting him to get more PT. He should start until our first draft pick hopefully emerges. Bring in Love only for outside shooting as dictated.
