Hot Hot Hoops senior writer Matt Hanifan will provide his take on the offseasons of all 30 teams for the next 30 days! We will be going in alphabetical order, beginning with the Eastern Conference. Today, to begin the series, we look at the Atlanta Hawks!
Additions: Larry Nance Jr., Dyson Daniels, Cody Zeller (sign-and-trade), David Roddy
Subtractions: Dejounte Murray, Bruno Fernando, Saddiq Bey, A.J. Griffin, Wesley Matthews, Dylan Windler, Trent Forrest
Re-signed: Vit Krejci, Seth Lundy
Draft: Zaccharie Risacher (No. 1 overall), Nikola Djurisic (No. 43)
Hanifan’s outlook: The Hawks have been the NBA’s definition of mediocrity each of the last three seasons, going 120-126 with a minus-0.2 NET rating. Heading into July, it felt like a matter of time before the Murray-Young backcourt was split up, and I think the Hawks did a decent job with its return of Murray. Their best asset may be the 2025 first-round pick from the Lakers, who had a fairly inactive offseason outside of bringing in J.J. Redick from the broadcaster’s booth as head coach. I was admittedly low on the Risacher No. 1 pick, and it was really unfortunate that Djurisic got injured at the start of Summer League. All in all, I think it’s a real possibility that the Hawks are a play-in team for the fourth consecutive season–which may be more of an indictment of how bad the rest of the East is at the bottom than Atlanta itself. It’s also going to take general manager Landry Fields more than one full offseason to get this team back to top-5/6 territory in the conference.
