Hot Hot Hoops senior writer Matt Hanifan will provide his take on the offseasons of all 30 teams for the next 30 days! Today, we are looking back on the Boston Celtics’ offseason.
Previous Offseason Outlooks:
********************************************
Additions: None. (We are excluding Exhibit 10 contracts from this list)
Subtractions: Oshae Brissett (Free Agent), Svi Mykhailiuk
Re-signed: Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, Xavier Tillman, Sam Hauser, Neemias Queta
Draft: Baylor Scheierman (No. 30 overall), Anton Watson (No. 54)
Hanifan’s Take: The Celtics are coming off one of the most dominant seasons in recent NBA History. They became the 14th team in NBA History to win 80 combined games en route to the franchise’s 18th-ever NBA Title, going 64-18 in the regular season followed by a dominant 16-3 postseason run. They posted the second-highest adjusted NET Rating (accounting for strength of schedule) since Dunks & Threes started tracking the stat in 2013-14 and the third-highest NET since 1996-97. Well, guess what? Boston brought back each of its 10-best players from last year’s group, while adding savvy wing Baylor Scheierman with the final pick of the first-round. To add insult to injury, Boston brought in Lonnie Walker on an Exhibit 10 contract; a player of his caliber shouldn’t have to sign a training camp contract, but that’s a different discussion for a different day. Brad Stevens did great work keeping this core intact for not only this season, but for the next several seasons. They have legit functional size, elite shooting, elite two-way guards and wings, good coaching (Mazzulla deserves more credit) and reliable depth. Stevens–and Danny Ainge–found a formula to build around their two stars, and they deserve all the credit for doing so.
Grade: A
