Hot Hot Hoops senior writer Matt Hanifan will provide his take on the offseasons of all 30 teams for the next 30 days! Today, we are looking back on the Washington Wizards’ offseason!

Previous Offseason Outlooks:

********************************************

Additions: Saddiq Bey, Jonas Valanciunas, Malcolm Brogdon

Subtractions: Tyus Jones, Deni Avdija (trade), Landry Shamet, Eugene Omoruyi, Jules Bernard

Re-signed: Anthony Gill, Richaun Holmes, Tristan Vukcevic

Draft: Alexandre Sarr (No. 2 overall), Bub Carrington (No. 14), Kyshawn George (No. 24)

Hanifan’s Take: Last season was the worst season in Wizards’ history, finishing 15-67, 20 games worse than they did the two seasons prior. Though a positive development was the hiring of head coach Brian Keefe, who coached in the team’s final 39 games (8-31). Is that a good record? Absolutely not. But Keefe showed signs of encouraging player development throughout the roster, which is what Washington desperately needs, regardless of what the W-L looks like at the end of the day. They added veterans Jonas Valanciunas and Malcolm Brogdon while throwing a dart on Saddiq Bey, who tore his ACL toward the end of 2023-24 and will likely miss the entire upcoming season. As a result of acquiring Brogdon, they were able to stack two first-round picks–one of them being Carrington, who I am very high on–plus two future second-rounders. Carrington was an elite pull-up jump shooter with great length and was one of the youngest prospects in the class. Even after an unfortunate Summer League, I’m not completely out on Sarr, a raw prospect offensively with very intriguing defensive upside. The Wizards project to be one of the league’s worst teams again, but should continue to be willing to take on draft capital and stack assets, even if they take on a bad contract (like Brogdon’s) or two.

Grade: B+
