Hot Hot Hoops senior writer Matt Hanifan will provide his take on the offseasons of all 30 teams for the next 30 days! Today, we are looking back on the Dallas Mavericks’ offseason!

Previous Offseason Outlooks:

********************************************

Additions: Klay Thompson (sign-and-trade), Spencer Dinwiddie, Quentin Grimes (trade), Naji Marshall

Subtractions: Josh Green (trade), Tim Hardaway Jr. (trade), Derrick Jones, Alex Fudge, Greg Brown III

Re-signed: Markieff Morris, Brandon Williams

Draft: None.

Hanifan’s Take: The Mavericks are coming off their first NBA Finals appearance since they beat the Heat in the 2010-11 NBA Finals. Dallas made substantial midseason moves by adding P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford from Charlotte and Washington, respectively. This offseason, they shifted chairs at wing. The biggest add was landing Golden State sharpshooter Klay Thompson in a sign-and-trade; Thompson is a below-average defender–a far cry from where he was once was defensively, especially before his knee injuries–but he’s still an elite sharpshooter. He will get to play alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving–forming a lethal offensive (and “eek!” defensive) trio. Though they did a good job essentially swapping out Josh Green and Derrick Jones Jr. for 3-and-D wing Naji Marshall. I also really liked how they bought low on Quentin Grimes, who’s coming off the worst season of his career due to a wrist injury with a shrunken role. He’s a rock-solid spot-up 3-point shooter and a hard-nosed defender. Since they lost both Green and DJJ, what he provides defensively could be really important. The Mavericks had a very good offseason, even though I still don’t know if they are in the top tier of West contenders heading into next season. Even though they made it out in 2023-24, it’s going to be an even steeper uphill climb in 2024-25.
