Hanifan’s Take: Last year was the season from H-E-double hockey sticks for the Memphis Grizzlies, the most injured team in the league. It began with Steven Adams undergoing season-ending knee surgery days before the start of the regular season, on top of star point guard Ja Morant getting suspended for the first 25 games. It compiled with many injuries to Marcus Smart, Desmond Bane, GG Jackson II, Luke Kennard, Brandon Clarke, David Roddy and Xavier Tillman (before he was traded), among several others. A total of 33 players appeared for Memphis last season, including 27 playing at least 100 minutes and 20 playing at least 300 minutes. It was a long season for Memphis, who finished 27-55. OK, enough of last year’s horror story. Memphis was able to re-sign Kennard–one of the most under-talked-about elite shooters in the sport–while drafting Zach Edey No. 9 overall as the presumptive Adams replacement. I wasn’t high on Edey as a prospect, but I absolutely love the fit; Memphis was one of the few places inside the top-20 (no, Miami wasn’t one of them) where I thought he would be a legitimate impact player Day 1. Edey and Morant will make life so much easier for each other. I’m not sure if he’ll be an immediate 25-30 minute per night player, but he possesses an incredibly high floor for 20 minutes per night within that context.
