Hot Hot Hoops senior writer Matt Hanifan will provide his take on the offseasons of all 30 teams for the next 30 days! Today, we are looking back on the San Antonio Spurs’ offseason!

Previous Offseason Outlooks:

********************************************

Additions: Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes, Malachi Flynn

Subtractions: Dominick Barlow, Jamaree Bouyea, Cedi Osman, Devonte’ Graham, Raiquan Gray

Re-signed: Charles Bassey, David Duke, Sandro Mamukelashvili

Draft: Stephon Castle (No. 4 overall), Harrison Ingram (No. 48)

Hanifan’s Take: Outside of trading the No. 8 pick for an unprotected swap six years (plus a 2031 unprotected pick) from now on draft night, I really liked what the Spurs did this offseason. If it were for a pick outside the top-10, I’d feel better about it from San Antonio’s perspective–even in a flat draft. And after Minnesota traded Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo, it arguably looks more favorable for SAS. Nevertheless, they added veteran point guard Chris Paul–who will serve as a great mentor for Stephon Castle, one of the best players in the class. They also added veteran wing Harrison Barnes from the DeMar DeRozan trade. Though the biggest headliner from that deal was yet another pick swap, this one being in 2031, when DeRozan will be retired while Fox and Sabonis will be in their mid-30s, assuming both are still on the team. That could be a steal for San Antonio, who’s done a masterful job adding pick swaps, which more teams are more willing to give up for myriad reasons. The Spurs may not be a playoff team in 2024-25, but they’ll certainly be in the hunt. The arrow’s pointing up.
