Hot Hot Hoops senior writer Matt Hanifan will provide his take on the offseasons of all 30 teams for the next 30 days! Today, we are looking back on the Utah Jazz’s offseason!

Previous Offseason Outlooks:

********************************************

Hanifan’s Take: As long as Danny Ainge is in charge, when it comes to the offseason and, specifically, transactions, the Jazz will be somewhere in headlines. One of the biggest storylines this offseason was Lauri Markkanen’s future in Utah. The All-Star big man was coming off the two best seasons of his year and was set to enter the final year of his deal, but was not extension eligible until Aug. 6. Throughout the offseason, there were ongoing trade rumors surrounding Markkanen and the Golden State Warriors, though nothing matriculated with Golden State’s reluctancy to involve second-year guard Brandin Podziemski in any trade. Markkanen eventually agreed to a five-year, $238 million max extension with the organization on Aug. 7, making him ineligible to be traded this season because the earliest he would be able to be moved would be after the Feb. 6 trade deadline. Ainge also decided not to move Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson and John Collins, three of the team’s most attractive trade chips heading into the 2024-25 season; Collins could enter free agency next summer, while Clarkson and Sexton won’t be free agents until Summer of 2026. The biggest storyline outside of that was getting good value in the 2024 NBA Draft with Williams, Collier and Filipowski, who were all consensus top-25 players in this year’s cycle.
