When Pat Riley acquired Victor Oladipo from the Houston Rockets at the 2021 trade deadline, there were high hopes. He was a former NBA All-Star and All-NBA caliber talent, averaging nearly 20.0 points prior to the trade with the Miami Heat. The expectation was for Oladipo to work back to his old form and provide a huge two-way spark, until injuries ultimately ended his time early in South Beach.

It is still painful that Dipo didn’t work out. He fully embraced the Heat Culture and genuinely wanted to be a lifer upon his arrival. He brought valuable rotation minutes during the 2022 postseason and displayed elite defensive talent. There were some standout performances offensively as well, including his 23-point outing in a close out game 5 against the Atlanta Hawks that year.

Oladipo recently spoke to Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller on “The OGS Show” podcast about his time with Miami.

He was always an X-factor on the Heat, especially in 2022 and 2023. It seemed like Dipo was always working himself back from another injury setback, but when he was available he made an impact. Whether it was providing point of attack defense or energizing the crowd on a transition dunk, fans were rooting for his comeback story.

There were times when he would step up on both ends of the floor and be a key contributor to wins, both in the regular season and playoffs. However, Heat fans envisioned All-Star form Oladipo when he was traded here. It became a point where just having available off the bench was a luxury, rather than expecting him to be a crucial part to the team’s core.

If Miami got that prime Indiana version of himself, there would be a strong case to be made that they would’ve won a championship in the Jimmy Butler era. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way, as Oladipo’s peak performance came as a two-way role player. He still could’ve found a way to play in that type of position long term with this build, until injuries continued to set him back.

The last time Oladipo played was when he blew out his knee on a fourth quarter drive to the basket in the 2023 first round series against the Milwaukee Bucks. It is a shame that his journey had to end that way, but it appears that there will always be mutual respect and admiration between Dipo and the Heat organization.
