In the modern era of NBA basketball, you don’t see many games that end with both teams failing to crack 90 points. In fact, it’s happened just three times since the start of the 2022-23 season … until tonight.
Tyler Herro’s game-winning jumper with 0.5 seconds left propelled the Heat to an 89-88 win over a shorthanded Orlando Magic squad Thursday night inside Kia Center.
Herro finished with a Heat-most 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting, but he made three pivotal baskets down the stretch after entering the game with just over five minutes left in the game.
It was an ugly game for both teams. The Magic coughed up the ball a season-high 23 times while the Heat had 20 of their own — resulting in 53 combined points-off-turnovers (25 for Heat, 28 for Magic). But that’s exactly how the Heat like it–in the mud.
Alec Burks was huge off the Heat bench Thursday, scoring 17 points, including 13 in the second half to help give the Heat–who trailed by 17 at one point–their first lead of the night. He hauled in six rebounds with three steals. Terry Rozier tallied 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting off the Heat bench, while Jaime Jaquez Jr. showed flashes of his rookie-year sealf, posting 15 points with a game-high five steals.
Miami outscored the Magic by 30 points from deep but Orlando returned the favor by outscoring the Heat by 20 in the paint.Jalen Suggs led the way with 29 points–albeit with seven turnovers–on 10-of-22 shooting; rookie wing Tristan da Silva had 18 points and six boards while Goga Bitazde was a thorn in the Heat side all night, adding 10 points with a game-high 14 rebounds (five offensive).
All things considered, this is a big win for Miami, improving to 15-13 on the season. It didn’t start pretty, but it found a way to found a way–which is what’s important given the state of the team.

Very interesting article that projects where the Heat may be headed.
Tyler Herro spearheads youth movement that represents the Heat’s future.
In this week’s 5 Things U Can Heat, Tyler Herro continues his All-Star campaign and Erik Spoelstra has to stick with the youth movement.

It was a good win against NBA’s #2 best defensive team.
The Heat’s defense was weak. Apart from Rozier and Bam, other Heat players were not closing up on their players. Orlando players had too much space to operate and did so for 3 quarters of the game. Luckily, for the Heat, Orlando’s 3s were not falling.
On offense, Rozier,Bucks,Nico,JJJ,Hero contributions were essential to the team’s victory.
The last 4 minutes of the game was the most vexing minutes of the game. The Heat had many opportunities to make it a 3 possession game, but came out empty with many trips down in Orlando’s end of the court due to careless turnovers.
I still do firmly believe that the Heat has enough personnel to compete against the best in the East..
The preseason moves they made is paying off. They can go big or small if and when they choose to. They have many more players capable of knocking down 3s. They have good perimeter and paint defenders. They all need to complement and support each other now into a well oiled machine. Hence, Pat Riley’s statement squashing Butler’s trade rumors was timely, but I wish it had come sooner.
Go Heat, Go!
Hey Alien, I appreciate your point of view, but with due respect, I don’t see how a one point last second victory over a team missing three key players while we were only missing one, or the rest of our results so far, can lead one to think we can compete with the better teams. I will give you that we are not as far from competing as perhaps I thought and we would be even closer if Dru Smith and now possibly Nico didn’t get hurt. Nico was coming on as a player, and another plus has been playing Ware as he has already helped a lot in ways beyond what can be seen in a box score. But, in my opinion we still don’t come up to the top five in our division (Celtics, Cleveland, Philly, New York, Milwaukee) even if we have a healthy Jimmy. BTW, if Philly has health, they are the best, again, in my opinion (and I hate Philly the most).
That was ugly.. I mean UGLY.
Thats why you need vets.
Well done Burks.
Hopefully. Jovic doesnt force himself to play next game to avoid further injury.
Give his minutes to Keshad, larsson and Ware for chemistry and experience.
Great comeback, fueled by several players who had their moments, Nico in the first half, then Burks, Rozier, Jaime, and Tyler at the finish. It was a nice hard fought win on my birthday.
Happy birthday bro, hope you enjoyed!
Thank you Mr Big
HB, 30!
Thanks. Getting up there. I’m so old I remember the Dolphins first game. My junior high school, Nautilus, used to attend dances at the Surfside Community center, and the Dolphins first game for some reason must have been played on a Friday night because that’s when the dances were. Anyway, I remember hearing at the dance that the Fins returned the first kickoff of their existence for a TD. The returner, a guy named Joe Auer.
happy belated bday 30 mine is tomorrow i went to nautilus also then on to beach high.i remember that auer return like it was yesterday.good dolphin times when shula got here same as good times when riley got to the heat..
I thought that was the case, that you went to the same schools as me. I went to Treasure Island Elementary, how about you? Hope you have a great birthday. My joke was always that my father had my mom’s labor induced so he could take the deduction early.
bay harbor elementary
i remember p e teacher koochilakotis at nautilus like an army drill master
Not to digress but ok, I will. Once Kouch was giving a talk to our eighth grade phys ed class out on the field and he was sitting under a tree and a bird took a crap that landed right on his shoulder and we were all too scared to laugh.
Scary thought hed prob be 120 years old by now
Enjoy. Celebrate with an icy RC Cola 😉

Happy birthday, 30.
Thanks all you guys. Thanks for accepting me no matter how many times I am wrong.
Happy (belated) Birthday 30. The way I see it, many folks weren’t fortunate to make it to my age. I am grateful for each day. Hope you had a nice day. GO HEAT!!!
Thanks. Anyone who got to be old is lucky. And that feeling of gratitude seems to come easier as you age.
Started out horrendous, and the turnovers was atrocious, but the heat never gave up, and got this win out the mud. The bench came through tonight from big shot burks playing his best game of the season. Jovic was good too until he got hurt unfortunately….also a dash of scary terry helped as well. Juan wick was is the building tonight, this was an encouraging game from 3 for him. Lastly can’t forget the boy wonder/ man wonder hitting that game winner. He’s not batman yet, so I would classify herro as nightwing.
At least he’s not Robin.
your a wrestling guy how bout mr wonderful(paul orndorff)
Most of the game was disgusting until Burks got hot. Heat came out looking like they had just come from a funeral. No energy. No focus. No ball movement. No team chemistry. Nothing.
Miami was outrebounded again 42-35 (although Banchero and the Wagner brothers didn’t play). Three Heat starters scored less than 10 points Robinson 0, Bam 4 and Highsmith 9. Fortunately, Miami made 50% of it’s 3 point shots to 17.2% for Orlando.
Herro took the right shot at the end. The team only needed a 2 pointer. He should have taken a similar shot to win vs Pistons instead of a 3. Instead, Heat lost that game 125-124.
Having both Burks and Robinson is redundant. The team needs to keep Burks and trade Robinson to a team with poor 3 point shooting. Houston and Orlando rank 29th and 30th in team 3 point shooting 32.5% and 31.1%, respectively). He should be worth a young player and a first round pick.
It is very apparent that the team is severely lacking a floor general. Someone to run the offense. A pass first point guard. If Riley can’t pick up a good floor general via trade, maybe Spo needs to give Isaiah Stevens a shot.
Stevens’ Sioux Falls stats are:
13.3 ppg3.6 rpg10.6 apg1.5 spg50% FG93.1% FT31.7% 3 PTI would also like to see Spo work Johnson into the rotation. He plays very good defense and is taller, a better rebounder and a better scorer than Highsmith.
In other news:
5th place Milwaukee lost to Brooklyn tonight and dropped to 16-13, one half game ahead of 15-13 Miami. For all you folks who felt that rookie Zach Edey wouldn’t make the transition from college to pro, he scored 21 points and had 16 rebounds and 2 blocks in Grizzlies’ 155-126 win over Toronto. Edey is averaging 10.6 ppg and 7.5 rpg in 21.3 minutes. He is also shooting 53.3% from 3 point range.
Excellent comments. We need a floor general. Not sure Dru can be replaced in franchise.
stevens looks like a true pg pass first
nobody wants dunc couldnt guard my grandmother.shooting is ok not great.burks is better player.spo scratcher why dunc plays over burks
