Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was suspended one game following the altercation Sunday evening against the Houston Rockets, the NBA announced Tuesday.
Heat guard Tyler Herro was also fined $25K while Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green was fined $35K. Rockets wing Amen Thompson was suspended two games for tossing Herro the ground while head coach Ime Udoka was fined $50K for “verbal abuse of a game official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his technical foul and ejection,” per the press release.
Rozier’s suspension will take place on New Year’s Day when the Miami Heat face the New Orleans Pelicans. The 6-foot-1 guard immediately attacked Thompson upon him tossing Herro, whaling at him with punches. It was unclear how many connected.
Udoka was ejected from the game, as was Rockets assistant Ben Sullivan. No Heat players or coaches outside of Herro or Rozier received any punishment.
The scuffle occurred with 35 seconds left in the game. Click here to check out the full incident.
Miami ultimately won the game 104-100 behind a near triple-double from Tyler Herro, who finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. The Heat trailed by as much as 12 with over five minutes left in the third quarter, but outscored the Rockets 43-27 over the game’s final 17 minutes.

Heat fans can also do better and patiently support this team morph into what we hope for and do less posting all sorts of imaginable trade scenarios under the sun.
Not bad. But what about VanVleet. After all, he did get ejected for (slightly) bumping an official.
On a more serious subject, I saw Butler’s interview this morning. He seems resigned to the fact that the trade situation is out of his control. If Riley does not trade him, it seems the future is clear, at least for this season.
Option A:
Spo should play his best players while developing the youngsters, as much as possible. Riley should trade for complimentary pieces before the February 6, 2025 deadline, if possible. The team should continue to play hard and play to win and let the chips fall where they may. Riley should wait to see if Butler is happy and decides to opt in for next season. If he does and it is mutually agreeable, the two may come to an agreement on a 1-2 year extension after next season. Butler signs an extension at a team friendly price, retires as a Heat player and has his jersey placed in the rafters.
Option B:
Same as Option A, except Butler opts out at the end of the season. In that case, Riley waits to see if Butler gets an acceptable offer from another team and if a sign & trade is possible. If that happens, negotiate the best deal possible (player, draft pick, etc.). If Butler signs as a free agent and no sign & trade is possible, Riley uses the available salary savings from Butler’s contract (and savings from other expiring contracts) to recruit free agent(s).
This season, with a core of Bam, Butler, Herro, Ware, Rozier, Highsmith, Jovic, Jaquez, Robinson, Burks, Love, Johnson, Larsson, Richardson and possibly Stevens, Miami has a shot at 4th-6th place. A 4th or 5th place finish would likely avoid Boston, Cleveland and New York in the first round. After that, it’ll be a dogfight any way you cut it.
GO HEAT!!!
My understanding is that there are very few teams that have the cap space and, the ones who might (like Brooklyn) are not contenders. A sign and trade would be likely if he opts out. As you have pointed out, the return would be less than trading him by the February 6 deadline.
Jimmy’s lack of availability this season has hurt his market value. No team is going to pay max money for a player who isn’t available a third of the time. No team is going to pay for a $50M+ rental (prorated) for the rest of the season, if they aren’t assured he will be available for most of the games or be willing to sign an extension.
His best bet is staying with the Heat, picking up a cool $52M next year and either negotiating an extension for another year or two or becoming a free agent and seeing what he can get. As a 37 year old, I’m sure it won’t be max money.
A lot of sports leagues often seem to try to even things out instead of trying to deter future fighting. If I was commish, Thompson would be facing five games without salary. I agree about all else but will say people do remember who stepped in to defend their teammates. Rozier made a lot of new fans that day.
yep, myself included. Two days ago I would have been saying we should trade Terry. Now I want him to retire in a Heat uni
A friend/neighbour is that person that shows up at your of hour of need, irrespective of the personal cost to him….Hero will not forget Rozier in a hurry, trust me on that.
