Miami Heat: 1 telling stat reveals unfortunate truth about team over last 3 seasons

Not all wins are created, nor are all losses.

Nearly one year ago today, the Miami Heat trounced the then-tanking Portland Trail Blazers by 60 points, the largest margin of victory in franchise history.

Fast forward to this season, the Heat undressed the Los Angeles Lakers in early December, yet have also blown double-digit leads in an NBA-most 21 losses this season.

A lot can happen in an 82-game season. More lows than highs have occurred for Miami, who enter Tuesday seven games below .500 at 36-43 after last night’s 12-point win over the beleaguered Philadelphia 76ers.

Despite the roller coaster ride that is the Heat, one telling stat suggests they continue to find their way back to the middle: Mediocrity.

According to NET Rating, Heat have been mediocre for last 3 seasons:

While things can still (slightly) change over the next five days, the Heat are slated to finish around the middle-of-the-pack in NET Rating; they’re currently No. 16 at a deadpan 0.0.

Somehow, someway, water always reaches its level.

They are 0.6 points per 100 possessions behind the Sacramento Kings and 0.5 points ahead of the Orlando Magic despite being 2.5 games back of their intrastate foe in the play-in race.

If you adjust it to strength of schedule–which Dunks and Threes always does an excellent job of–Miami is No. 16 in NET Rating at minus-0.1 points. They are No. 21 in adjusted offensive rating (112.1) and No. 8 in adjusted defensive rating.

The Heat is well on their way toward finishing with a near-even NET for the third-straight season–suggesting they have been, well, mediocre for three straight seasons.

  • 2024-25: 0.0 NET (16th)
  • 2023-24: 1.8 (17th)
  • 2022-23: -0.5 (21st)
  • 2021-22: 4.5 (6th)
  • 2020-21: -0.1 (17th)

According to PBP Stats, the Heat’s NET over the last three regular seasons rests at 0.5, the 16th-best mark in the Association–sandwiched in between the Dallas Mavericks (0.54) and Memphis Grizzlies (0.49).

While it went on a historically great NBA Finals run that may never be replicated, the uncomfortable truth about Miami is that it’s been mediocre for three straight seasons and in four of the last five. Jimmy Butler’s presence (or lack thereof) hasn’t changed much about it.

As they transition into this new build around Bam Adebayo, perhaps it’s necessary to take a step or two back before three steps forward. From the top down, everyone needs to be held accountable–but that doesn’t mean this is an irreparable ship. This new build will take time, but patience is a virtue. The worst spot to be is trapped in the middle. Even with Butler, that was the case (during the regular season).

Now let’s see how they plan to get out of this area in the coming future.

The Hawks lost to the Magic tonight 119-112 and the Bulls lost to the Cavaliers 135-113.

Orlando is now 39-40 and a clear favorite to end up in 7th place. The Hawks at 37-42 are two games back in 8th place. The Heat and Bulls at 36-43 are tied for 9th place a game back of Atlanta.

The Heat and Bulls play each other tomorrow night in Chicago. The winner will have the inside track for 9th place and home court in the first play-in game. As the 9th or 10th place team, Miami will need to win 2 games to advance to the playoffs as the #8 seed opposing #1 seed Cleveland.

In addition, if the Heat wins out and the Hawks lose to the Magic, the Heat gets the tie breaker and 8th place in final standings and the 8th spot in the play-in round based on their 2-2 head-to-head record against Atlanta and possession of a better record within the division. Miami would then have two chances (one vs Orlando and a second against the winner of Atlanta vs Chicago) to win one game and advance to the playoffs vs #2 seed Boston.

thats a lebron post .ty for that sun.speaking of suns booker gonna want out of phoenix besides kd.

SunManFromDogBone

I always liked Booker. He was a perfect fit for Phoenix. I thought he had the size, skills and physical ability to become a good defensive player. He worked hard and did that. I always thought Herro could do the same. He’s working on it. FYI, his father is African-American and played in the NBA and CBA. His mother is Mexican-American whose parents immigrated from Nogales, Sonora Mexico to Grand Rapids, Michigan where the couple met.

heatforlife

i knew he was bi racial like youve pointed out before lots of the good ones are.hed be a perfect fit for any team.def a top 15 player. hes going to waste away in the valley of the sunman,.they need to make smart trades and draft good to .if u had to choose one an old kd or a prime book who u taking.kd is so dam good still. i think its a hard decision.because of age most hhhers prob taking book.

SunManFromDogBone

Phoenix should get rid of KD and Beale and start from scratch with Booker. That organization has been mismanaged for at least 10 years. Booker would jump at a chance to go to a contender.

heatforlife

a suns man should def know

SunManFromDogBone

Just to clarify…I’m a former Suns Man. Now SunMan (e.g., the Sun…not the Suns). Jus sayin.

SunManFromDogBone

Oops. Vs either #1 Cleveland or #2 Boston.

Wolves choked big time! 20+ lead in 4th. We can wait for Ant Edwards then pounce on it when he expresses his dissatisfaction lol

heatforlife

from your mouth to gods ears im praying for that

SunManFromDogBone

They were up by 20 to start the fourth quarter and then were outscored 40-13. They lost by 7. Talk about choking big time. T’Wolves are soft. Ant would be a perfect fit in Miami. He needs the discipline Heat culture can provide.

nuggets fire malone wow thats a shocker dam is spo next lol

Big_guy305

Yes they did him dirty, he deserved better after getting them there 1st championship, and being the most winningest coach in there franchise history. Nba on some crazy shit. First Jenkins now him before the playoffs. Seems like winning a championship doesn’t give you job security like past years. Same type of firing happened to Vogel, budenholzer, and nurse. Only pop, spo, and Kerr are secure for now and everybody else not so much.

heatforlife

how the f can they fire malone with like 4 games left .let the playoffs play out at least.there starting 5 when everybodys healthy is as good as anybodys.problem is murray is now andrew wiggins

Big_guy305

I don’t understand it either tbh, but I think something big happened behind the scenes that we don’t know about, and supposedly him and the gm was beefing.

heatforlife

jamal murray being hurt all the time didnt help

SunManFromDogBone

NBA Executives and owners blame the coaches for their own shortcomings. I noticed that Blazers owner Jody Allen just extended Joe Cronin’s contract and that dude sucks as a GM. Meanwhile, watch them fire Chauncey for all the stupid decisions they have made.

heatforlife

coaches dont effect games gms and players do

SunManFromDogBone

UCLA won 10 NCAA Division 1 championships in 11 years (1964-1975). I think coaching had something to do with. John Wooden brought out the best in players.

heatforlife

.talk about a dynastythey won like 70 games in a row until elvin hayes team beat them in astro dome one of the most iconic games in bball lew alcindor bill walton were coached up or just naturally great. in nba coaching matters very little . gms and players determine jewlry

ManilaHeat

Another champion coach gets booted out. Yeah when will Spo’s time arrive? He can retire here or coach a local team 😁

By the summer of 2026, Miami has the opportunity to evolve beyond mediocrity to being a very good/competitive team. However, it will require the following:

1) making excellent draft picks,
2) getting rid of underperforming and overpaid players,
3) retaining productive players,
4) developing young players,
5) making strategic trades and
6) recruiting an all-star level (hopefully two-way) scorer.

If handled properly, by training camp 2026-2027, the Heat should have a young, talented, athletic team that is prepared to make a run at a championship.

If improperly handled, Miami may be looking at mediocrity for several years to come during Bam’s prime years.

Sharkey

I wouldn’t care about being mediocre in the regular season, if we got a playoff run like in 2023. But unfortunately our results during the mentioned seasons were a consequence of roster flaws that had not been addressed. But we still managed to make it to the finals and to the conference finals once during those years.
Our current core is actually not bad at all. I think we are actually better now (if everybody from the good core is healthy) than we have been at any point during the current and previous season. We just need to add a couple of good players, shed some bad contracts and we will be fine.

Reality Czech

Agree!

heatforlife

not good players a great one.we have lots good players(4)

heatforlife

we got the big now need the guy who can take us home

Bout30man

That’s what I see too. And, btw, a lot of us have been saying this for two years. I think this team is in a place where, if steered correctly, we can again avoid another complete rebuild. But, everything depends on three moves, our two draft picks (we won’t escape the play in and that is for the best), and one trade we will need to make. That trade should be made carefully, and for at least a A- player (a player of Bam’s quality), it doesn’t have to be an aging superstar, and should occur when the deal best arises, and should not involve losing any of our core. And, we have to make room for the new guys too. I don’t want to point fingers on who should go but I will say we should look for two way players in the draft. If we draft two two way players, we could have an excellent defense, something we have lacked. And defense is so subtle, but it is just as important as offense.
