Erik Spoelstra to be named head coach of USA National Team

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is expected to be named the head coach of the Team USA men’s national team, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Thursday.

He takes over for Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who was Team USA’s head coach from 2023-24.

Spoelstra was Kerr’s lead assistant for the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics, where America took home Gold.

This is a well-deserved honor for Spoelstra, 54, widely regarded as arguably the best coach in the NBA. We’ve seen what he can do with below-average talent — it’s tantalizing to see what he’ll be able to do with USA’s best players in the 2028 Olympics.
