The Miami Heat didn’t just make a franchise-altering move by finally acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, they changed the entire landscape of the league overnight.
A team that was stuck in mediocrity for years with a combination of Jimmy Butler’s messy departure and four-straight play-in berths reached rock bottom by missing the playoffs entirely this past season. It was the first time they failed to do so since the 2018-19 campaign, and Pat Riley and company knew that drastic change was overdue.
That’s where Giannis comes into the picture.
A clear-cut top-five player on the planet in the heart of his prime years at 31 years old.
Giannis Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists on 65% shooting this past season.
The resume speaks for itself with Antetokounmpo. A former NBA Champion and Finals MVP. A two-time league MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, seven-time All-NBA, four-time All-Defensive first team, All-Star game MVP and part of the lucrative NBA Top 75 players of all-time club. Make no mistake— this is a huge deal for the Heat and basketball world.
After years of striking out on other stars, it all led Riley to landing the biggest white whale of them all.
And it instantly has made South Beach relevant again. Despite some more work needing to be done to fill out the roster this summer— which is the easy part for an experienced front office like Miami’s— a player of Antetokounmpo’s magnitude alone is good enough to immediately expect championship expectations right off the rip.
This was Miami’s shortcut back to contention status. And they really pulled it off.
