Newly extended Heat wing “set for major role” this season

The Miami Heat recently inked a new four-year $60 million extension with 25-year-old wing Pelle Larsson. And Miami is expected to get the most out of that financial commitment.

The deal will not be in effect until the start of the 2027-28 season, as Larsson is still under contracts for a little above $2 million for this upcoming 2026-27 campaign. The creative construction of the Andrew Wiggins re-signing earlier this summer— which gave Wiggins more money upfront for this season and a cheaper annual price tag for the following three years— paved a way for this Larsson deal to come to fruition.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, that Wiggins contract flexibility not only helped keep Larsson around longer term— but also helps the Heat keep Davion Mitchell and still have enough money for another notable addition next summer.

Larsson took a jump in his skill set and usage in his sophomore year last season. After this new contract, that notion will only continue even more now, as the Heat have been known to be very high on Larsson’s game.

Pelle Larsson could reportedly play even more than Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr.

The Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman is expecting a large role for Larsson this upcoming season. Whether or not he starts or comes off the bench, Winderman recently noted “he’ll play plenty.”

“Expect Pelle (Larsson) to be in closing lineups when the Heat are playing from the lead… it could be quite likely that Pelle averages more minutes per game than either Klay Thompson or Tim Hardaway Jr— no matter where Pelle is listed positionally. He’ll play plenty.”

ESPN insider Shams Charania, who was the first to break the Larsson extension, also iterated the same expectations:

”Larsson has become a foundation piece for the Heat amid their offseason overhaul… The Heat are set to have a major rotation role for Larsson, who averaged 11.4 points per game last season, up nearly 7 points per game from his rookie season. He also ranked fourth-best in offensive efficiency in Miami, per ESPN Research, and fifth in minutes played.“

Larsson is primed to continue developing under coach Erik Spoelstra moving forward, and the opportunities will assuredly be there. He is the type of underrated role player that provides an impact beyond just the stat sheet from his hustle, IQ and natural feel for the game. Over the four Fiba World Cup Qualifiers this summer, Larsson has averaged 26 points per game for Sweden.

A lot of Heat fans bought in early to Larsson stock, and now the organization has evidently done the same.
