Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo have spent years trying to make life difficult for each other on the court. Now that they’re teammates on the Miami Heat, neither seems particularly interested in letting the other off the hook.
Their matchups will move to the practice floor, where both believe that same competition can bring out the best in their games.
“If I guard Bam every single day at practice, I think when he goes out there and plays against anybody in the league, it won’t be much harder,” Antetokounmpo said.
He expects the benefits to go both ways, explaining that facing Adebayo’s defense every day should better prepare him for opposing teams.
For Adebayo, that process creates a standard they can carry into games.
“I feel like that’s what great players do. They push each other, to make each other better,” Adebayo said. “So then when you get in the game, there’s no questions asked. And it’s an expectation to it.”
Antetokounmpo already knows how demanding those matchups can be. Asked later about getting to know his new teammates, he joked that his usual eight hours of sleep weren’t enough when preparing to face Adebayo.
“When I play him, I got to get like 10 to 12 hours,” he said.
That respect extends to the consistency of Adebayo’s effort. Antetokounmpo pointed out that the competitiveness he experienced firsthand also shows up when he watches Bam play against other teams.
“I’ve played against him for many years and everybody knows how competitive he is. He never takes days off,” Giannis said. “I know he doesn’t take days off against me.”
“It’s like fire building fire,” he continued. “Once we’re around one another, we both want to elevate each other’s game.”
Setting the tone for Miami’s defense
The challenge for the Heat is turning that individual competitiveness into something the entire roster embraces. Giannis sees their responsibility as going beyond what they say to teammates.
“We have to keep on pushing one another,” he said. “We got to keep on pushing the team, our teammates, but not just by talking, by setting the example.”
According to Adebayo, the defensive end has already brought out that intensity during pickup games.
“That’s when you hear all the shit-talking,” Adebayo said. “That’s when you hear all the competitive energy start to go up. It’s because of the defensive end.”
Miami’s frontcourt pairing gives the team plenty of possibilities, but both players pointed to the importance of having defenders throughout the lineup who can handle their assignments.
“We talk, we communicate. Everybody can guard their yard, and that’s one through five,” Adebayo said.
Antetokounmpo illustrated the point by running through a hypothetical lineup before asking a simple question:
“Where’s the mismatch?”
“I might be the mismatch,” he added. “That’s the crazy part.”
The Heat will still have to turn that confidence into results. For now, their two stars see the daily work against each other as an opportunity to establish the habits and expectations they want everyone else to follow.
As Antetokounmpo put it: “We want to make the whole team better.”

Giannis fts might be a concern. He’s below 70% if im not mistaken. I really hate it if you pull out ur best player in a close game.
That’s why it would be nice to have another reliable big in the mix. This is where Jovic can carve out a niche for himself as a combo SF/PF.
we have port of miami
Bobby is a good rebounder and 3 point shooter. He’s not a good defender.
getting greek better u cant play much better than him.im just worried when he starts to decline due to father time
Live for today heat. Can’t worry about tomorrow…or yesterday. Today is all that matters.
These guys are doing an excellent job of getting us excited. No question I have a certain level of renewed enthusiasm going into this year.
I was slow to come around when I first heard Miami was trading away its young players plus multiple picks and swaps. However, with the way things developed over the summer, I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I am getting excited about the upcoming preseason and regular season games. I’m particularly excited about the team’s defense. It matches up well with just about any team I can think of.
Critics who are projecting Miami as a play-in team are not taking Miami’s transition offense, zone defense, perimeter defense, pace and superior coaching staff.
We will get a chance to see how the team meshes in a few days. I’m feeling optimistic.
Of course, you and I felt the same way about that. I’ve always liked Giannis and was very happy we got Portis, Klay, and Hardaway. But what I am particularly happy about is the team has added or retained youth. One of the most talked about players beyond Giannis this preseason has been Pelle. It’s amazing that Giannis said he didn’t know how effing good Pelle was. Quite the endorsement! So, Pelle, Gardner, Mitchell, Dru, and even Jovic gives us some younger players to build on along with 2-way and G league players like Keshad, Donaldson, and Mbeng,
“Your defense will save you on the nights that your offense isn’t working.”
~ Adolph Rupp ~
I like Miami focusing more on recruiting two-way players rather than one hit wonders. Most/all of the team’s younger players such as Larsson, Conwell, Garland, McDonald, MemBeng, Hadley etc. are good/very good defensive players.
Jovic has the potential to be a good defender, but the jury is generally still out on him. He’s on double secret probation for the time being and doesn’t know it. I was encouraged to hear him say during one of his interviews that he spent the summer working on his game and getting his head in the right place. He admitted that last year it wasn’t. He appears more confident and healthy this year and has a positive mental outlook (that’s 90% of it).
Miami should not get into shootouts/pissing contests with teams like the Sixers. The Heat should instead rely on overall defense, rebounding, transition offense, pace, depth and experience to compete with the NBA’s elite teams.
I am a big sports fan. In boxing, it often comes down to a boxer’s preparation, determination and ability to impose his will on his opponent. A smart boxer generally avoids trying to outpunch a puncher. Likewise, a puncher normally avoids trying to outbox a boxer. Each individual must rely on his strengths while exploiting his opponent’s weaknesses. The same goes for team spoprts like basketball.
Miami should focus on playing to its strength (high level defense). The objective is to frustrate and neutralize the other team’s top scorers, forcing lesser players to carry the load. One-way scorers are generally not very good defenders. If Miami’s defense puts the clamps on them and they have “off nights” it should negatively impact the opponents’ overall offensive outputs and defensive efforts.
The games this year should be exciting. The first game is on Saturday. It looks like it may be televised on NBA TV.
only problem lots other teams in east got better also.easiest game might be the bucks

Jaquez, Jakucionis, Conwell, Gardner plus #13 draft pick this year and probably another lottery pick next year. Plus salary savings due to expiring contracts such as Herro’s.
yes lottery pick next year
Bam, Wiggins, Mitchell, Jaquez, Powell, Larsson, Jakucionis, Jovic, Richards, Fontecchio, Gardner, Young, lottery pick 2026, lottery pick 2027, one trade or free agent.
Probably
I think around 41-41.I There were probably other potential trades and free agents out there that would have made the team stronger.

I’m not that pessimistic.
