Two games are just two games. But one key stat suggests the Miami Heat are off to the worst two-game start in franchise history to begin the Giannis Antetokounmpo era.
Coming off two blowout losses to the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons, the Miami Heat have a minus-42 point differential. According to Stathead, that point differential is the franchise’s worst over their first two games in the organization’s history, with both of those games coming at home.
Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves blitzed the Miami Heat on the opening night, winning by 25. Miami came up dry against the Detroit Pistons last night, losing 128-111. The two losses aren’t an indictment on Antetokounmpo, but the surrounding pieces. Antetokounmpo is averaging 35.5 points on 64.9 percent true shooting. Everyone has combined to shoot just 36.2 percent from the floor with a tumultuous 48.0 true shooting percentage.
This marks the ninth time over the last 10 seasons where a team has a minus-40 point differential or worse in two games. Only one of those teams have won more than 26 games over an 82-game season (Warriors — 39 wins in shortened 2020-21 season). It’s safe to say there’s a lot to figure out, though part of the Heat’s struggles is the lack of effort on defense, on the glass and on loose balls.
Ironically enough, the other team with a minus-40 point differential in the NBA is the Charlotte Hornets, who the Heat face Saturday night. Charlotte, without Kon Knueppel and Coby White, got blasted by 47 points on Friday against the Atlanta Hawks after a 110-103 win on opening night against Brooklyn.
Worst point differential thru 2 games since 2017-18:
- 2020-21 Golden State Warriors: -65 (finished 39-33)
- 2021-22 Oklahoma City Thunder: -54 (24-58)
- 2021-22 Orlando Magic: -51 (22-60)
- 2017-18 Phoenix Suns: -50 (21-61)
- 2019-20 Warriors: -47 (15-50)
- 2024-25 Utah Jazz: -43 (17-65)
- 2025-26 Dallas Mavericks: -43 (26-56)
- 2026-27 Miami Heat: -42 (0-2)
- 2026-27 Charlotte Hornets: -40 (1-1)
The best news is that the schedule does lighten up for the Heat over the next coule weeks. They face a beat up Charlotte plus a Cooper Flagg-less Mavericks on Monday. Atlanta, Indiana and the Lakers will be a challenge, but the Heat follow that three-game stretch with the Clippers, Warriors, Kings and Jazz before a five-game homestand that begins on Nov. 13.
There are wins to be had, even though West Coast road trips are never easy. Perhaps they can build some chemistry away from home, when it’s just them. While there’s still 80 games left, they need to fix whatever struggles are creeping up fast so they don’t get too much behind the 8-ball in a crowded East.
