We are less than one month from the Feb. 8 NBA Trade Deadline. While there’s only been one big trade–Toronto sending OG Anunoby to the New York Knicks for Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett in a five-player swap–plenty of scuttlebutt has swirled leaguewide, and it won’t slow down any time soon.
One team looking to part with multiple pieces is the Atlanta Hawks, with one name that particularly sticks out: Dejounte Murray.
According to Yahoo! Sports NBA reporter Jake Fischer, the Heat and Hawks have engaged in “initial” conversations for Murray, who’s in the final year of a four-year, $64 million deal.
“Miami has left rival teams with the impression that the reigning Eastern Conference champions are looking for ball-handling reinforcements,” Fischer wrote Thursday. “The Heat are another suitor to keep an eye on for Murray, although there hasn’t been anything substantive beyond initial talks between Atlanta and Miami at this point, sources said.”
Fischer also cites that the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and the Detroit Pistons, the worst team in the NBA, are potential suitors for Murray, even though it’s more than possible more teams could be in on the former Washington product.
The Heat are an interesting fit for the 27-year-old combo guard. They lack the requisite point-of-attack defense–lost by Gabe Vincent’s departure–that would greatly benefit them in an Eastern Conference stacked with high-end lead guards in Jalen Brunson, Damian Lillard and Tyrese Maxey.
Murray is also a good distributor, an exceptional rebounder (for his size) and features good rim pressure, even though he’s struggled finishing at the rim this season; he’s finishing at a 55.9 percent clip, which ranks in the 26th percentile amongst combo guards after finishing in the 60th percentile or greater in each of the last three seasons, according to Cleaning The Glass.
Murray is averaging 21.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.4 steals in 36 games. He’s shooting 46.6 percent from the floor, a career-high 39.4 percent from 3-point range on the highest 3-point volume of his career (6.1 3PA; 8.2 3PA per 100 possessions) and 81.4 percent from the charity stripe.
The Heat must cobble up $16.4 million if it were to complete a trade to Atlanta, assuming it was a two-team trade and he was the only person coming back. They are also known to do their due diligence on all players across the league, so perhaps take this with a grain of salt.

Report: Heat showing interest in Atlanta's Dejounte Murray – Hot Hot Hoops
I know I’m late to the party, but here’s my two cents. I’ve read from various sources both the Hawks want to reset the team around 25-year-old Trae Young. I can see why, they are having a rough go this year, standing at 15-23. Last year there were plenty of rumors Atlanta was interested in moving on from John Collins and/or De’Andre Hunter. They moved Collins but find themselves paddling upstream this season. Having said that, here’s a trade idea to push the needle forward.
Miami trades Kyle Lowry, Caleb Martin, and a pick (1st rd) for De’Andre Hunter and Dejounte Murray. This brings in a PG and a PF who have three-point shooting skills and play defense (Murray would be fine under Spoelstra’s tutelage).
That would leave Miami with a solid young core for the future (age and remaining length of contract in parenthesis): Adebayo (26, 3yrs), Herro (23, 4yrs), Jaquez (22, 4yrs), Murray (27, 5yrs), Hunter (26, 4yrs). As well as still having Jovic(20, 3yrs) and Robinson (29, 2yrs) on the team. You strengthen the team with some young horses for the rest of Jimmy Butler’s run (3 yrs) and have a solid core for whoever you bring in later to fill Butler’s 45M cap space.
The money works in a trade. So what do you guys think?
I’d be happy to see the Heat add DeJounte, but there’s not a lot of players on this Heat I’d want to see leave.
If the trade is Dunc or Ty for Murray, he’s got a lot to prove. Both those guys have been good. I’m not saying they’re all-stars, but neither is Murray. Are we sure it’s worth it to give up an equivalent player plus other assets? Same for a guy like Terry Rozier, Kyle Kuzma, etc. Is it worth breaking up the team and giving away draft capital to swap Herro for someone else’s B+ non-all-star?
Anyway, my feelings on any trade for any B+ player remain the same, regardless of the details. If it’s g-league guys and and a pick for someone good, I’m in. if it’s a couple B+ guys and a pick for a legit all-star, I’m in. Otherwise, this team is good, and they have playoff experience beating the best teams in the East. I’m fine to let it ride untl the offseason and figure it out from there.
A basketball analyst just wrote up the Hawks this week. Their perspective was Murray’s defense has slipped this year to something not near his reputation.
I don’t think there are a lot of Gabe Vincent’s out there–low usage primary ball handlers, who are good defenders, and can step into secondary scoring roles on occasion in the post season. Without really seeing the team healthy, it’s hard for me to envision how a higher usage (and likely better than Vincent) lead ball handler would fit on offense. It already feels at times that style of player is a clumsy fit.

Murray will come at a price, and we may have to give up something we don’t love losing. But, Murray would help us a lot, so if the price isn’t too steep, maybe a pick and one player, we should do it.
Murray would be a good pickup for us, and we don’t gotta give up herro for him. The lakers and knicks can’t give a better offer then us .
