After providing a spark last spring, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is having one of the worst shooting seasons of his career.
He’s averaging his fewest points (12.0) since 2018-19 with the worst 3-point, effective field goal and true-shooting percentages of his career outside of his rookie season, when he logged just 311 total minutes.
In fact, the 6-foot-1 guard has been one of the Heat’s most disappointing players after being one of their best scorers upon being acquired from Charlotte last January. He’s missed 36 of his last 41 3-pointers while converting on just 39 percent of his attempts since the start of December.
Rozier, 30, recently opened up to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald about his season-long shooting struggles, though he’s confident that it’s not a mechanical issue.
“I shoot the same every year. It will work for me,” Rozier said. “It’s just ups and downs. Once it starts clicking, it’s going to start clicking. I don’t care what my percentage is; I know it’s always 50 percent chance of going in.”
He’s started in 17 of the team’s 32 games entering Saturday evening. He’s been a net-negative when he’s been on the floor as a ball-stopper and below-average defender. Though consistently making shots could be a big boost for a Heat offense that’s slogged their way through the season.
Tyler Herro, who’s having an All-Star caliber season despite questions on whether he will actually make it, is getting blitzed every night with defenses tailoring their coverages to get the ball out of his hands before he can create advantages.
Rozier–as well as the other three players sharing the floor–will need to find a way to create and knock down open spot-up looks sooner rather than later. If not, forget it. Herro’s been the Heat’s most consistent form of offense, and Miami’s “TNT” backcourt has routinely blown up in their face.
