NBA Trade Rumors: Could Heat get involved in De’Aaron Fox sweepstakes?

Heading into Tuesday, arguably the biggest name on the trade block–nearly one week ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline–was Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler.

That was until ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania dropped a bombshell, reporting that the Sacramento Kings are “expected to open up talks to potentially deal” star point guard De’Aaron Fox. While his target destination is the San Antonio Spurs, the Kings are going to open up trade talks for Fox, who is expected to have plenty of suitors around the league.

While the Heat is still navigating Butler’s tumultuous situation, don’t be surprised if they do their due diligence regarding Fox, according to ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst.

“Obviously the Miami Heat would have interest in trading for De’Aaron Fox,” Windhorst said Wednesday on The Hoop Collective podcast. “Again, things could change. But I don’t think Jimmy Butler is what the Kings are looking for. So is there a move that could satisfy the Kings that could get Miami De’Aaron Fox?

“Miami, if they made an offer (for Fox) that didn’t include Jimmy (Butler), they potentially make an offer with stuff that they would get for Jimmy, which could potentially be a first-round pick or two. … I think Miami would be interested in any star player that becomes available. I don’t know if they can manage doing two separate transactions, but I think they need to be considered on the list for sure.”

The Heat will always go after stars–Heat president Pat Riley has built a brand on going after the big fish.

However, it’s still not very realistic that Miami will land the 27-year-old, who’s in the penultimate year of a five-year, $163 million contract he signed ahead of the 2020-21 season. The Heat only have one tradable first-round pick outright with swaps available in 2029, 2030 and 2031.

Miami flipping Butler as part of a massive multi-team trade would have to be on the table. Whether it is or isn’t, given its lack of draft capital, it would likely have to part with at least two (maybe three) of Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Nikola Jovic and Jaime Jaquez Jr.–their most desirable assets outside of Bam Adebayo.

That would be a lot to stomach for a team that’s currently fighting to stay above .500. There is a world, however, that Miami could use the assets it would take back in a Butler trade to acquire Fox–in addition to one or two of their young pieces.

Nevertheless, there isn’t likely a realistic offer that Miami can compete with if San Antonio is involved. Should a bidding war arise, the price for Fox could skyrocket–which could put the Heat out of any realistic sweepstakes before it really begins.

If the Heat somehow come out of this Jimmy Butler Fiasco with DeAaron Fox on the roster, I will contribute money to build a statue of Pat Riley

Not going to happen for the Heat. We should stick to just trying to unload Jimmy and be happy we don’t get stuck with him.
Already you are starting to hear the excuses, our GM always seems to have them lately, for not being able to trade him.
But contrast how we handled the Jimmy situation with how a franchise does it the right way, as Sacramento is doing, the way that gets you top reimbursement for your player. We already lost some serious value for Jimmy, to quantify it maybe a draft pick and a player, because of errors in judgement.
And don’t talk about the past as if that changes the reality of now that the Kings are handling things right and the Heat ever so wrong.

C’mon 30, you’re comparing apples to oranges. These are 2 completely different situations on many levels. Fox is 7 years younger than Butler. At this point, he is the more desirable player by far imo. To my knowledge, Fox has honored his contract by playing hard and, for the last couple of seasons, has played most of the games. He has, again to my knowledge, not been a prima donna with respect to team travel and accommodations.
Perhaps I am in the minority on this, but I was glad Riley called out Butler at the end of the season. I felt he deserved it. I found his comments about the Celtics and Knicks to be absurd and outrageous. I felt the same about him spending hours at a tennis tournament and calling in sick the next day. I complained many times during last season that Butler often seemed to be giving less than his best effort.
Riley is far from perfect. But in the last 8 years up to the present, he and his staff got Bam at 14, Herro at 13, Jovic at 27, Jaquez at 18, and Ware at 15. If you look at those drafts, you will probably find at least 30 players chosen higher that are not as good.
