Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is under federal investigation for an illegal betting probe from March of 2023, Jared Diamond of Wall Street Journal first reported Thursday.
Federal prosecutors are investigating if Rozier, 30, manipulated his performance from a March 23rd game against the New Orleans Pelicans while with the Charlotte Hornets. In that specific game, Rozier played 10 minutes with five points, four rebounds and two assists before leaving with a foot injury.
He did not play in any of the team’s final eight games for the rest of the 2022-23 season.
According to AP Sports’ Tim Reynolds, Rozier has not been accused of any wrongdoing yet–though the situation is still fluid.
Here is the statement released by the NBA regarding the situation, according to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix:
“In March 2023, the NBA was alerted to unusual betting activity related to Terry Rozier’s performance in a game between Charlotte and New Orleans,” the release read. “The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules. We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York related to this matter and have been cooperating with that investigation.”
Rozier was acquired by the Heat in January of 2024, where he’s played 73 combined games. The 10-year veteran is averaging 12.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists on 41.0 percent shooting, including 29.0 percent from 3-point range and 88.9 percent from the free-throw line across 42 games this season.
