Tyler Herro isn’t worried about a possible extension this offseason

I don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but there weren’t many bright spots during the 2024-25 Miami Heat regular season and postseason, mired by drama with the team’s best player (at the time) and inconsistency.

However, one of the bright spots was Tyler Herro’s emergence as a lead creator, experiencing career-highs in multiple key categories while narrowly making his first All-Star team. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a step in the right direction for the 26-year-old, who’s hoping to prove his worth this postseason.

How he plays over the next couple of weeks could influence the team’s willingness to reward him with a three-year extension that he will be eligible for in early October. Herro discussed the possibility of being extended earlier this week, but that appears to be the last thing on his mind as the Heat look to upset the Cavaliers in the first round of the 2024-25 NBA Postseason.

“It’s something I haven’t paid much attention to,” Herro said, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. “I’m going to let my agent and the organization figure that out. But everyone knows I want to be here long term and I’m definitely excited to see what they have to say for the extension, and see if they want me here as much as I want to be here.”

Starting in October, Herro will be eligible to sign a three-year, $149.7 million extension, beginning at $46.2 million in 2027-28, his age-28 season.

His salaries over those next three seasons would be $46.2M, $48.9M and $53.6 million, respectively. Assuming the cap rises 10 percent (the max in new CBA) over that span, his aforementioned salaries for his extension would account for 24.7, 24.2 and 23.7 percent of the cap from 2027-30. For perspective, his current $29 million cap hit is 20.6 percent of the cap while his next two salaries account for 20.1 and 19.4 percent, respectively.

If Herro waits to sign one until the summer of 2026, he would be eligible to sign a four-year, $207 million extension. It’s also worth mentioning that Herro will be eligible to sign a max worth up to 30 percent at the end of his current contract, should he decide to forego all extension possibilities ahead of free agency. He will also be eligible to sign a five-year supermax worth nearly $380 million if he makes the All-NBA team in 2025-26. In 77 games, he averaged a career-high 23.9 points on 47.2 percent shooting and 37.5 percent from 3-point range on 8.7 triple tries per game. The Kentucky alum hauled down 5.2 rebounds and dished out a career-high 5.5 assists per game. There are quality points for and against extending him, but just because he’s eligible for an $150 million extension doesn’t mean the Heat will offer him that full number over five months from now.

Shouldn’t get one and tbh he should’ve been traded before quitter years ago. Tyler’s defense makes his offense null and void others think he’s a core player but Tyler’s best role on this team has been a 6th man type of player (again because of his defense). You got garland a player not known for defense himself saying that’s the cavs game plan attack herro lmfao
