Dan Bisaccio becomes next Skyforce head coach, Kasib Powell joins player developmental staff

In a fascinating role reversal, the Miami Heat announced Tuesday that coach Dan Bisaccio, who’s currently coaching the team’s Summer League squad, will be the head coach of the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Miami Heat’s G-League affiliate, starting next season. Additionally, Kasib Powell, the Skyforce’s head coach for the last three seasons, will join the Heat’s player developmental staff in 2024-25.

Bisaccio has gone 4-1 combined in this year’s Summer League, including 2-0 with a plus-34 point differential through a pair of Las Vegas Summer League games. While Heat second-year forward Jaime Jaquez Jr.–who finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting–helped out with those, it appears that Bisaccio’s been instrumental in multiple players’ success through the early portions of Summer League, including Keshad Johnson, Isaiah Stevens and Josh Christopher.

He’s been with the organization for the past 10 seasons, most recently as a developmental coach last year after spending five as a video coordinator and four as an assistant video coordinator. In those roles, Bisaccio helped players and the coaching staff break down film, assisting with scouting reports and additional game planning. Before his time with the Heat, he spent two seasons with Marquette as a graduate assistant and video coordinator for the men’s basketball team.

Powell had a long track record with the Skyforce. As a player, he won the 2007-08 G-League MVP with Sioux Falls, averaging 22.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists.

As a coach, he was an assistant under Nevada Smith and Eric Glass for four seasons (2016-21)–the Skyforce did not play the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 restrictions–before becoming the team’s head coach in 2021. Since his arrival as head coach, the Skyforce had an NBA-most 21 call-ups, including Justin Champagnie, Drew Peterson, Malik Williams, Jamaree Bouyea and Alondes Williams last season.

Here were a few other notable call-ups under Powell:

  • Dru Smith, G
  • Orlando Robinson, C
  • Brandon Knight, G
  • Mychal Mulder, G
  • D.J. Stewart, G
  • Javonte Smart, G
  • Micah Potter, C

The Skyforce made the Western Conference Finals in 2022-23 and finished with the second-best record in the conference (22-12) during the regular season, sporting the G-League’s ninth-best offense and 11th-best defense despite all the call-ups.

Congratulations to all on their new roles!

Stupid is as stupid does x 2. I always called him “Low IQ Caleb” now it’s easy for everyone to see why.

Caleb Martin’s camp never gave Miami the opportunity to match Philadelphia’s offer, per @flasportsbuzz

Martin had not just one chance to take more money to stay in South Florida, but two chances. Even though the Heat couldn’t put that first $65 million option previously rejected offer by Martin back on the table, they were still willing to give him slightly more than the 76ers did after the fact.
“The Heat had the flexibility to match Philadelphia’s four-year, $35 million deal with Martin, but Martin’s camp never gave Miami that opportunity. Martin could have made considerably more money with that same deal with the Heat because unlike South Florida, Philadelphia has city and state taxes.”

Maybe he is just not greedy.

He turned down Miami’s initial $65M offer ($13M per year average) because he was hoping to get $15-$20M per year. He wound up accepting $8M per year playing for a team that has both state and city income taxes, instead of re-signing with Miami which has no state income tax. I would have to conclude he was both greedy and stupid (low IQ). Jus sayin…

It was a dumb move on his part, but I’m glad he was stupid enough to make that decision because he ain’t worth that money, so we Definitely dodged that bullet.

Yup. That’s the point. Miami should never have made him the $13M offer to begin with. I would much rather have Highsmith at $5.5M than Martin at $13M or even $8M.

1.I am not writing this team off yet.We needed size and shooters, that is what the selections so far have tried to address. It may seem unpopular because most of the guys are green. No big names. No fan favorite. I am ok with it.

2.Thank God, there was no destabilizing move this season that was 1 step forward, 2 steps backward.

3.I like the enthusiasm with the greens, will go a long way to get them into the grove early.

4.The only thing, I need from Jimmy this season is to pump up guys psychologically, his body language will help the team a long way not just his play.

5.The rest like they say is to pray for health

Neither do I.
Healthy and motivated Heat can be a kind of a problem for anybody.

But its clear, that this is not a champion level team.
Team needs more talent, more length, more shooting…… so there is no an easy fix to be better.

Baby steps, there is way around. The only problem is, that Butlers window will be missed.

Don’t give up just yet. The trade deadline isn’t until Feb 6, 2025. A lot can happen between now and then. Righjt now, unless things cgange drastically, I see Jimmy and Herro as “short-timers.” The future is bright with players like Bam, Ware, Jaquez, Jovic, Larssen, Johnson, and others who have room for improvement.

*Bam had 17 points in 19 minutes and made 3 of 5 3pt shots against Serbia yesterday. Jus sayin…

Team is the 7th/8th best team in the east. Be optimistic all you want this will be the 3rd season in which some fans get optimistic when the heat FO does nothing in the offseason. They make excuses, apron bs when Bos gotta be in the 10th apron by now, the fans make excuses glad we didn’t sign so and so etc etc. Need talent in the nba to win not optimism a playin team again

Maybe this is the year that Boston and other top teams have all the injuries and Miami is healthy. Maybe Riley makes a trade or two that changes things. Maybe every team cannot be the Dodgers or Yankees, yet can still have a shot at winning. Can you honestly tell me that if everyone is healthy and Ware turns out to be an All Rookie center, the Heat doesn’t have a shot at advancing beyond the first round? If you add a strategic trade or two in there, who knows how far they can go?

If Jovic and Jaquez make significant strides this season, I can see Ware, Bam, Jovic, Jaquez and Rozier getting some pt together, especially if “Playoff Jimmy” doesn’t show up and is traded for assets and Herro is moved to sixth man or traded. Pretty decent front line. Run…Run…Run…

Exactly. This isn’t about whether Ware will EVENTUALLY be the starter or what Bam is or what will benefit the team most. It’s only about one thing – will Ware be starting the very first game of the season? I say no. Some people are totally Jethro Tull – Thick As A Brick.

Sure, players from other teams may also look good , but as previously mentioned, If anyone doesn’t agree that the Heat are at least one of the best, if not the best, teams in the league developing castaways and undrafted talent, they have no clue. UD, Whiteside, DJJ, Duncan, Strus, Nunn, Vincent, heck, even Tyler Johnson. These guys don’t have to be ‘needle movers’ or all stars. If you develop players who become rotation players or good backups, your organization is doing an excellent job.
I am happy we got Ware. Size, athleticism, and skilled. But the odds of him being the starter when the season starts are close to zero. What i do think will happen is when Jovic takes a rest, we may see Ware come in and play next to Bam. That will allow Spo and Co to see how that works.

After this off-season which Bleacher Report joined many other publications in expressing their low opinion of the Heat’s summer moves (or lack there of) and gave the Heat a C (which was a low grade), maybe change is due. Everyone has a point where it’s time to retire. The general consensus from the pundits is clearly that Pat was ineffective in building a team that can compete this year. And, then you hear this bit of absurdity from their front office- they actually said Terry Rozier was their big summer move. All I can say is SMH, sad, very sad.

Big_guy305

You should know the media always doubting us. and I for one don’t care what bleacher report or Any media entity thinks because they didn’t know we would be in the finals twice the past 5 seasons. Cannot forget spo coaching this bunch. Spo is arguably one of the best, if not thee best nba coach in the league. If im being honest though…I don’t think this team could make it to ecf, that’s why I am keeping my expectations low. I look at this way, if Jimmy comes through regular season, and playoff Jimmy mode. Then Maybe pat will either resign Jimmy and trade him while the value is high or try to make trade with an expiring contract Duncan and an hopefully better herro for a better player. If Jimmy doesn’t come through then we don’t make the playoffs, then get our 1st round draft pick, and still trade Jimmy for a decent enough package to a contender, or let him walk, and get some cap space back.

Bout30man

Yes, those are the type of comments a lot of folks here say. Eternal optimists, and that is nice, but this time I beg to differ. My point was, you would be hard pressed to find anyone outside of the Miami Heat, not even Miami writers, who thinks we had a good offseason or that what we have is a competitive team.
And, btw, while all we have to talk about is our GLeaguers, Milwaukee just got better too, with Trent, a player we could have used, and now that makes five teams in the East that definitely have stronger line-ups than ours, and a sixth at least our equal.
I am calling it now, this team , as currently constructed, won’t make the playoffs. The mistake a lot of folks make is thinking because we have some good players, we are good. But, in comparison to other line-ups, that’s where we fall short, as we have some good players, just not enough.

Nice. My best case scenario, say we got no one else, would be,…
Very good health amongst all players, 65 games out of Jimmy, Bam, and Terry. Then we need Ware to be just as healthy and turn into a Lively level or better player, and JJJ and especially Jovic would greatly develop their games. Also need Burke and JRich to stay healthy. That is a team that could maybe get at best the four seed, something like that.

It’s ok, I understand that, I’ll keep my expectations low though, then gradually raise them depending on how Jimmy plays this season. If he plays like last season, then he will make it easier for pat to trade him or let him walk .

Well, you know that i am an optimist, but i am a realistic optimist. There were many here, like you, SM, and me, who felt/feel trading Butler would be best for the team. Unless every single thing falls perfectly in place, I don’t think there is a strong chance of winning a championship this upcoming season. Adding a Mitchell or Markennan would have been nice, but I’m not too upset about missing out on DeRozan or any other 30+ year old players. I believe the team needs to focus on youth.
I can’t change reality and the reality is that Butler is here until at least the trading deadline in February. I can choose to be miserable, or I can seek out the positives. I choose the latter. I think Ware will definitely help fill a gaping hole we’ve had for years. I look forward to seeing Jaquez (anyone that suggests he is a ‘scrub’ is a fool) and Jovic take their next step forward. I think Keshad is a beast. Christopher, Stevens, Pullin, Swider, and Alondes all have potential to land with this, or another team.

I feel this deserves to be reposted:

Jarrett Culver, Cam Reddish, Romeo Langford, Sekou Doumbouya. Johnny Davis, Dyson Daniels, Ousmane Dieng, Ochai Agbaji. Kobe Bufkin, Jarace Walker, Jett Howard, Anthony Black.
The first group are players picked before or immediately after Herro. The second are players picked at least 10 picks higher than Jovic. The third are players picked before Jaquez. I don’t buy into the Heat not doing well in recent drafts.
