Hanifan’s Take: Ah, yes, the end of an era! After 13 historic seasons, the Splash brothers (Thompson, Curry) evidently split up this offseason. Money talks, and Thompson wasn’t the same two-way phenomenon he was before his two leg injuries. After negotiations reportedly went “frozen,” Thompson signed with Dallas. In an effort to replace his production, general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. signed Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton, both on team-friendly contracts (despite the former hard-capping Golden State below the $178 million first apron). I also like adding veteran wing Kyle Anderson, a floor riser, to the fold. The Warriors are very high on second-year guard Brandin Podziemski, who was heavily involved in Lauri Markkanen trade rumors before Markkanen ultimately inked an extension with Utah. Golden State’s viewpoint is understandable; Podziemski finished in the top-5 in Rookie of the Year voting and can contribute to practically every facet of the game when he’s on the floor. Given how fiscally expensive the Warriors were during their heyday, I think they did a good job shifting deck chairs while barely exceeding the luxury tax, even though they’re still in “repeater tax” territory.
