Hornets hilariously troll Heat with special theme night in March

The NBA released their full 82-game schedule last month. As the time has passed, multiple teams around the NBA have released their promotional/theme nights for their respective home games this season.

The Charlotte Hornets released theirs on Tuesday. One of their theme nights will be against the Miami Heat in March, where they poked a hilarious dig at former Hornets guard and current Heat guard Terry Rozier’s betting scandal.

Hornets will have a “Sports Betting” theme night when Heat and Hornets play in March:

Yes, you read that correctly.

Whether it was intentional or unintentional: Well played, Charlotte.

The March 17 matchup between the two teams will be sponsored by bet365.

There are multiple interesting coincidences related to this game.

For one, this St. Patrick’s Day affair is days before the anniversary of the game that prompted the investigation in the first place. From a game played on March 23, 2023, 30 wagers were allegedly bet by an anonymous bettor when Rozier was still with the Hornets.

Rozier’s birthday is also on March 17. Happy early Birthday, Terry!

Outside of Rozier, the most recent sports betting allegation in the NBA surfaced in late June with free agent guard Malik Beasley. That has since been cleared; Rozier’s is still ongoing.

The Hornets are inviting humor coming their way, too, since Rozier was technically with Charlotte before getting traded to the Heat ahead of the deadline in 2023-24. But this is still a good dig at Miami, who have been trying to offload Rozier all offseason — but haven’t been able to because of his ongoing scandal.

Once again: Well played, Charlotte.

The Knicks made another nice move today, one of several in the recent past. They are going to be very competitive this year.

That was a nice move. It’s non guaranteed and I read that after training camp, they will likely have to release him or Shamet, who is a decent bench guy. But, definitely, if Brogdon is healthy, he’s the one to keep.

I checked out this Powell highlight. I don’t usually give a lot of weight because they only show the good stuff, but I came away very impressed at his 3 tier abilities and his alpha attack ability. I don’t think he is going to help us a little, I think he is going to help us A LOT!!!

Looks like he’ll be an awesome player for the Heat. If he is half as good as he looks in the video, Miami should be thinking about giving him a 3 year/$77M extension rather than letting him walk. Same goes for Wiggins. If he plays up to his capabilities, 3 years/$90M sounds about right.

Herro is the one who may be the odd man out. If he can be packaged for an all-star caliber player, that would be great! Unfortunately, I don’t think Miami can keep Powell, Wiggins and Herro. Depending on how Miami is doing by January, there may be quite a bit of trade activity prior to the Feb 5th deadline.

I agree about Powell. We aren’t going to know how good this team might be until we see how well they come together in the training camp and preseason and if Riley is able to pull off another trade or two.

if u trade ty u eliminate a major defensive liability.all others can guard his defense kills us wiggy bam ware all can guard norm i would assume also .sub out ty for a 2 way pg dejonte murray would be perfect.

There is a possibility he will be hard to move, one his contract, two, his defensive limitations. Still, he could be packaged, and it should be done. One can only hope it does happen as I think you are right in adding a two way player like Murray, or maybe a forward, for him. That would greatly strengthen our team if we got back a normal return, a return that would be fair for both sides.

Murray would be a nice addition. But I wouldn’t include Jovic in the deal. I am also fine starting the season with Herro, along with a backup big. I am intrigued by a starting lineup of Ware, Bam, Wiggins, Powell, and Herro, with Davion, Jovic, Pelle, and Keshad or Simone off the bench. Plus Dru, Jaquez, and Kaspar waiting for their chance. You can cover some of Herro’s deficiencies with those other 4, and the opposition defense would no longer be able to focus on him with Powell out there.
Would I rather have Murray? Yes! But, if not, I’m curious to see what that group can accomplish.

I think it is premature for us to speculate on the starters, rotation players and reserves. There will be fierce competition among several players for both the starter and second unit spots.

BLACK SHEEP
I can see a black sheep or two surprising everyone and earning a rotation spot. These include: Rozier, Jaquez, Fontecchio, Smith, Johnson and Goldin.

DEJOUNTE MURRAY
I had previously suggested trading Herro for Murray, straight up. After doing a little research, it appears the years and various injuries have impacted his performance. From 2023-2024 to 2024-2025 his ppg dropped from 22.5 to 17.5.ppg. His 3 point shooting dropped from 36.3% to 29.9%. Finally, his defensive rating dropped considerably compared to his rating when was selected all defensive second team in 2017-2018 with a rating of 101.0. The last three years, his defensive ratings were 116.3, 119.4 and 116.1.
Over the past three years, Herro’s defensive ratings have been 114.8, 114.2 and 114.9.

Herro + tbd for Murray + tbd could work, especially if Murray can improve his defense if he is surrounded by good/very good defensive players.

Premature to speculate? It’s what we do a lot of here. It’s the HHH mantra.

I’m speculating that it may be just a tad too early to speculate.

Which of your black sheep do you think has the best chance? Smith, if he stays healthy, is my choice. But, wouldn’t it be cool if Goldin became a player?

I think any of them could surprise us. If half of them are able to elevate their games, the Heat could be a very deep team.

  • Rozier could get his mojo back
  • Jaquez could find his 3 point shot and his confidence
  • Fontecchio could be the perfect replacement for Robinson
  • Smith could outshine the other point/combo guards in training camp
  • Johnson could make a huge leap and become a rotation PF
  • Goldin could demonstrate the ability to be a third big

Anything is possible. Three weeks from today (Oct 4th) we may begin to see preliminary results during Miami’s first preseason game against a very good Orlando team.

I wouldn’t package Jovic either in any admittedly speculative and probably poorly thought out trade ideas I come up with. I am excited to see him in training camp. There is a chance he makes a big improvement leap this year.

Yup. I think Miami should go with what they have (at least through preseason) to see exactly what they have and what they may need. I think it is premature to do much of anything until an evaluation of current players is made. This will be the first preseason together for several players.

With the Butler bs off their back, they should be able to concentrate on the business at hand. Has anyone noticed that quitter hasn’t shown up yet with the Mickey Mouse or emo hair with the Warriors?

Kawhi, Ballmer and Clippers are in serious trouble, if even a part of what is discovered right now is true. What about getting Zubac for our starting center?

Is that trolling? Well, ok, if you want to play the game that way, then

I propose a “Bums night” when Charlotte visits Miami, a special tribute to all bums playing in Charlotte and mightily failed to make a PO in 10 years (actually 9, but we can easily count in next season for that).

Their area hockey team is referred to as The Jerks, maybe it’s rubbed off on the basketball franchise. One difference, the Canes are actually good.

I don’t think it’s funny, more stupid, in bad taste, unfair, and reflective of a franchise that has lost its way.

The alleged illegal betting occurred in 2021 when Rozier was a member of the Hornets. I wonder if Charlotte knew anything about a pending or ongoing federal investigation before trading Rozier to the Heat. If they were aware, did they inform Miami before the trade? Hmm?

Apparently, Rozier may not be interested in a buyout and release. Miami doesn’t want to reward him by buying him out now or before the trade deadline (February 5th) and letting him get picked up for chump change by another team and then get his mojo back. It sure would be a b**** if he is released and a competitor picks him for peanuts and uses him in the playoffs against Miami.

I would keep him and use training camp to see what he has. If he is back to “Scary Terry” caliber, keep him, play him and trade him as soon as a descent offer comes in. There are several teams who can use a reserve combo guard or an expiring contract. If Miami is unable to trade him by the February 5th trade deadline, Miami should keep him until March 2nd, buy him out with 21 days left in the season at a cost of $6.8M and release him.

Note: The deadline for a released player to sign with a new team and be eligible for the NBA playoffs is March 1. This date is known as the playoff eligibility waiver deadline. Players waived by a team after March 1 are still free to sign with another team, but they will be ineligible to play in the postseason for their new team.

I agree. It’s easy to jump on a guy who is obviously having problems and taking heat for something he may not have done. He didn’t play relaxed last year. He never settled in. He was preoccupied. Hopefully, he has had some counseling and now has put everything in the proper perspective. If he has not done anything wrong, he shouldn’t be stressed. If there is any truth to the allegations, he may pick up right where he left off as “Not So Scary Terry.”
