Even with his recent slump, there’s no doubt that MiamI Heat big Bam Adebayo is the franchise’s most important player. When you think about him as the team’s Captain, it’s with a capital “C.” He’s the pillar of the franchise — even though there needs to be a better supplement of talent around him.
With roughly one month until the Feb. 5 trade deadline, The Ringer‘s Zach Lowe lamented Adebayo’s unavailability in trade talks — no matter how many teams persist.
“Having written a gigantic profile on [Bam Adebayo], I know exactly what he is to that franchise,” he said on a recent episode of the Zach Lowe Show. “He’s the standard bearer — culture bearer. There’s not one part of them that would want to (trade him).
“Other teams I know have for sure asked about Bam and have been told, ‘Hell no!’ And the wild card that you have to consider is, as they sniff around [Giannis Antetokounmpo] and other stars, all those stars are going to want to play with Bam.”
Through 26 games, Adebayo’s having the least efficient season of his career — similar to the start of last year. He’s averaging 17.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and one steal across 31.0 minutes per game. Adebayo’s shooting 46.2 percent from the floor, 32.1 percent from 3-point range and 76.7 percent from the charity stripe.
The three-time All-Star has missed time with both foot and back injuries, which have affected his impact. Over his first full seven games due to injury, he was averaging 22.4 points on 58.2 percent true shooting. That’s a small sample, but in the 18 games since, those numbers have dwindled to just 16.7 points on 55.2 percent true shooting.
Adebayo and Antetokounmpo share the same agent, a potential driving factor into their future partnership together. Should the Heat acquire him, it won’t be for Adebayo, it will be, in part, because Adebayo. To Lowe’s point, the rest of the league likely feels the same way — another reason why he’s incredibly important to this team’s short- and long-term success.
