Heat reportedly have interest in Ja Morant

As the trade deadline approaches — we’re just over three weeks away — rumors have continued to swirl around Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant.

Predictably, one team linked to Morant is the Miami Heat, who are 21-19 as they approach the halfway mark of the season. NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported in early December that the Heat have had internal discussions regarding Morant. He doubled down on those reports last weekend.

And the noise has only continued to get louder.

According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, the Heat have interest in acquiring the Grizzlies’ disgruntled star.

“The Heat do have interest,” he said recently on Sirius XM NBA. “I would like to see him in Miami. I would like to see him in Miami because of the structure. [Miami Heat president Pat Riley] being there — he’s never been shy to bring on guys who have questionable paths.

“I think it would be good for Ja Morant not just as a player, but as a man to go into there. The Miami culture is different. It really is.”

Morant has missed the Grizzlies’ last five games with a calf contusion. He’s also not expected to play in the team’s international affair Thursday against the Orlando Magic.

In 18 games, he’s averaging the fewest points since his rookie season, while sporting career-lows in field goal percentage (40.1), 3-point percentage (20.8), turnovers per 75 possessions (4.43) and true-shooting percentage (50.6).

This follows Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix reporting that the two most frequent destinations he’s hearing from league execs are the Sacramento Kings and Miami Heat.

“The Heat feel like a strange stylistic fit,” Mannix wrote. “They are running that same fast moving, Noah LaRoche–inspired offense that Morant hated in Memphis last season. But if Miami acquired Morant, it would undoubtedly pivot back to a more pick-and-roll heavy system. One that might make some of the current players on the roster happy anyway.”

In early November, I discussed why Miami’s adaptation of its offense — or that Morant allegedly did not like — was why he wouldn’t be a current fit.

Of course, if you get him at a bargain bin price, it’s an option worth considering. But it ultimately takes two to tango. Morant’s value isn’t high. But the Grizzlies don’t have to trade the star guard quite yet — unless it’s really desperate to.

According to the Miami Herald‘s Anthony Chiang, talks between the two sides have only been “preliminary,” up to this point.

A deal won’t get done until every side has urgency, so that’s to be expected.

The trade deadline is Feb. 5 at 3:00 p.m. EST.

Here we go again. I get excited too but don’t get your hopes up too high. Believe it only when it gets done. We get our hearts broken a little too often lately. But, if there is ever a guy in a situation that might lead him to here, it’s this guy. I say that because his dwindling stats and his reputation make him enough of a risk that many teams will stand aside and his low trade value makes him affordable even with our limited assets.

If we get him he should be paid in direct correlation to his availability 30% = 30% , 70% =70% etc

Taken together with his defense and assists, he is doing a good job. He would be an ideal back-up PG like Pacers back-up, J.T.. That’s why I have mentioned Dejounte more than once. Better all around player than Morant and plus cheaper. Good trade would be Wiggins to Warriors, Kuminga plus filler to Pelicans and Murray to Heat.

HFL lauded Dav. Now ready to trash him. lol

I think getting Ja and moving Dav to bench PG is a boss move. Send Kaspar, Fonteccio, Roziers contract and a pick. Call it a day.

s, Ja Morant recently bought a $3.2 million home in Miami under the Temetrius Morant Trust, a move happening amid ongoing trade rumors linking him to the Miami Heat, suggesting a potential future in South Beach and fueling fan speculation about a big NBA trade, according to reports from January 2026. Welcome ja u need something ill bring it to u

Niko appears to be a one good game in five type. He’s definitely expendable. But, the only way he gets moved is as filler in a trade of someone else.

The Memphis Grizzlies would primarily want a combination of draft picks and young players in return for Ja Morant, and are reportedly willing to take on “bad” contracts to acquire more assets. Rival executives believe they are unlikely to receive unprotected first-round picks given Morant’s recent injury and off-court issues. More likely assets would be protected first-round picks, pick swaps, or second-round picks.

Any team acquiring Morant would be committing to his existing contract through the 2027-28 season. His remaining guaranteed salary is:

  • 2025-26 Season: $39.4M
  • 2026-27 Season: $42.2M
  • 2027-28 Season: $44.9M

He is eligible for a three-year, $178M extension next summer (nearly $60M per season), further impacting future cap space. I don’t see Riley trading too many assets for Ja or paying him so much money in the future. It’s not as though Miami would be getting Alexander, Doncic, Cunningham or Haliburton.

On the trade machine Herro and Fontecchio for Ja works $ wise but I would imagine it would not be straight up 2 for 1. Memphis will definitely ask for a 1st and probably ask for JJJ or Ware.

Its nice to want things. They are the ones stuck with his underperforming bloated contract and are trying to dump him. Beggars can’t be choosers. Riley should ask for Santi Aldana too and we’ll through in a 2032 pick.

Unless they want expiring contracts, young players and picks, e.g., Jaquez, Larsson, Rozier, Jakucionis and 2 picks.

Give up a guy averaging 16/5/5 who works hard, is always positive, has no off court or on court issues, is available to play for a malcontent oft injured problem child? No thanks. I would have to reassess my loyalty if they did that.

Everybody else decided to pass because of:

  • his remaining salary – $106.5M
  • his stats – 19.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 7.6 apg, 40.1 fg% and 20.8 3pt%
  • his availability – in last 3 seasons he’s played in 77 out of a possible 204 games (37.8%).

But, who knows. Anything is possible. There’s a sucker born every minute.
