But, I feel like some of the things you have said were vindicated. Some want to remain hopeful, often beyond logic. And it is also hard to interpret reality when so many players on our team and our opponents are hurt at different times. We also get fooled by the positive glow we receive when we play teams that don’t want to win. And then there is the idea that somehow if we played different players or used a different strategy, we would get better results. But, the truth, as it almost always is, is that our record reflects exactly how good we are.
Tonight was a real gut punch, a sobering dose of reality. We were at full strength and got lambasted. Hard to see it any differently.
I like the people here, but I strongly disagree with some at times. The idea that this team can really compete after watching some of these games is, to be diplomatic, far fetched. I am disappointed, but not surprised. Anybody who predicted the 45-37 like I did, or something close to that, probably will come close to the final record. The draft picks in this deep draft are critical to future success, as is pulling off a smart trade this offseason.
The truth is coming out now. We shall learn more against Cleveland. I doubt they will manhandle us but my guess is that one game will be close, within 5-6 points , and the other more like 14-15 points difference.
One thing I am noticing is that of the two “good” teams we beat later in the season, Detroit and Houston, Houston has off nights. Tonight Houston is in a dogfight with a tanker. Other than those two teams, we pretty much only beat tankers or play in level teams once the season got going.
Let’s see what happens against Cleveland. We are fully healthy now, so at least we will know just how good we are.

FYI, Vlad is so great that he’s been demoted from the starting job with the g-league team. Dain Dainja has recently been getting more minutes. And Kas is just fine.

The Heat need to make the most out of the 2 picks in the draft. Then they need to bring in one quality player. I then believe they can be a really competitive team (not necessarily an eastern conference contender). We might be able to do a s&t for Powell. Herro can be appealing to a team that needs more offense and that he will be on an expiring contract. Duncan is a good example of a weak defensive player who fit in well with his new team. There will be no market for Jovic unless we add a sweetener, and we can’t afford to do that. If Wiggins opts out, we may lose him for no return (Powell too). Ware is only 21, so I’m not worried at the moment about the sophomore blues. We have a good young core of complimentary players, but no stars.

In a single game, I think Miami can win or lose against anyone. In a series, I don’t think this lack luster roster stands a chance.

You might be right. Looks like a little worse record than I predicted (45-37). That’s definitely play-in level. And little chance of getting past the first round.
It’s becoming clear now where we stand. It’s the difference between our Heat with mostly good players with a few very good players versus the better teams who have at the least an equal amount of very good players to good players. It’s a subtle difference and one that only becomes apparent when you compare and contrast.

Take away his 22ppg, take into account that he’ll give up 22, and they will still not be better. Maybe the same, but not better.
They are. They do have a lot of average defenders and one or two below average, along with also a couple of above average ones too. All in all it’s an average defense which is not good enough against the better teams.

If the second half goes as this one has, then the truth is there for all to see. We haven’t played the any of the top teams much late in the season when the good teams are in top form. It’s revealing. The Heat are just what their record says they are, and they need to get better. The Heat field a six to nine seed roster when healthy, and any thought they are better than that is false.
They need to get better, and each player they get has to be better than the player he replaces to get better. I would keep our best three, Bam, Powell and Wiggins. Anyone else is ok to replace as long as the player they get back is better than who they replace. That means it could be a two or three for one trade, or completed with picks. Or they need to draft high, which means tank in some form. You can’t have it both ways. There is no other route to improvement.

Tonite we are essentially fully healthy and you can see where we stand against one of the best. We are a good team, probably better than mediocre, like a .600 team. We need more, one very good player upgrade from being competitive, two upgrades away from being a real contender.
