As we summarized in his player review, which you can find here, it was a turbulent 2025-26 season for Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro. And there are breadcrumbs to suggest he may not be back in 2026-27.
Now, at the end of the day, all of it speculatory until it’s not. Herro has been at the center of myriad trade rumors over the last several seasons. And the Heat have (rightfully) valued him more than others. But assuming they do decide to part ways, which teams would make sense for the 26-year-old guard?! Let’s examine!
(Editor’s note: This article is NOT a report; it’s a column. For the sake of this thought exercise, we will keep it solely to team fit, where we’ll examine possible packages at a later date.)
Detroit Pistons:
Skinny: All three of these teams are still in the postseason — and each of their series will have a Game 6.
In Detroit’s case, it kept its season alive with a 116-109 win against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday behind a dominant 45-point performance from star guard Cade Cunningham. However, one of the Pistons’ premier flaws have been exposed this series: They don’t have reliable shooting outside of Cunningham.
While Herro’s postseason shortcomings are well-documented at this point, he would undeniably improve the Pistons’ spacing as Cunningham’s second fiddle. Herro, who will be a $33 million expiring in 2026-27, shot 37.8 percent from deep, albeit across just 33 games this season, and is a career 38.2 percent from deep. He’s a poor defender, but would be surrounded by plenty of good defenders (Cunningham, Ausar Thompson, Jalen Duren, Isaiah Stewart) in this context, helping cover up some of his flaws.
Plus, the idea of Cunningham setting up Herro, who would function as a secondary creator, is somewhat appealing, hypothetically.
Houston Rockets:
Skinny: Similarly to Detroit, the Rockets kept their season alive on Wednesday with a win over Los Angeles. But they’re still staring down the barrel of elimination.
A big reason why is Kevin Durant’s availability — or lack thereof. Nobody could have foreseen the injuries to Fred VanVleet days before the start of the season, or to Steven Adams. Those two bodies are critical to their success. But Durant’s addition was supposed to provide a huge boost to their offensive outlook this year.
Without those three aforementioned players, Houston is bereft of shooting. Herro’s fit in Houston would be similar to what it would be in Detroit. Jabari Smith, a good-not-great shooter, and second-year guard Reed Sheppard, who’s dealt with his own postseason struggles, are their only sources of tangible spacing. That’s an issue. And it’s a big reason why the Rockets may be a first-round exit in two straight seasons, despite being a higher seed.
Minnesota Timberwolves:
Skinny: This one may be odd, but the idea intruded my brain after Donte DiVincenzo unfortunately went down with a torn achilles in Game 4. Conventional wisdom suggests he’ll miss most — if not all of 2026-27. And we’ll see what happens with Ayo Dosumnu’s pending free agency.
But Anthony Edwards needs another secondary creator alongside him. While he’s far from perfect, Herro’s not a bad option if the Timberwolves can maneuver some salary around, which is a challenge in and of itself.

wow thanks for that my heat and rock bro almost went to my bag oh wait were in the 2020s judging by our team thought it was the 60s
Going to be harder to move Herro than many think and he will not bring back nearly as much as expected. Naz Reid alone is probably an overpay for Herro in the view of many teams. I would do that trade gladly. I wish we had more of Reid’s skillsets. My estimate is that Herro might bring back a Capella or VanVleet alone, as that’s sort of what I think Ty’s value is. Hopefully we will see.
with injuries and no d zero d only some heat fans on heat crack think he can bring anything decent back.
Who’s smelling crack?
2015 stat crack man
Whose crack he sniffing?
not sure why knicks regualrs still out there
99 40 to many teams in nba playoffs adam
knicks up by 39 in 2nd qtr.
So they are not getting out-athleticized again? Hmm
atlanta not a playoff team rc to many mediocre teams in jimmys season
This has to be the worst deficit in history
You thought last year’s series against Cleveland was bad. Imagine what they would have done to Miami? Fortunately for Atlanta, they have #7 pick. Maybe they’ll trade to move up for that missing piece.
In that case, Miami has a lot more work to do than bringing in an aging and/or injury prone ss.
if mickey goes over the cap what are the ramifications besides $$$ which he has billions.not sure why u wouldnt want kawhi for a few years.we can still draft more game changing vanilla fudges
Over the Salary Cap (Soft Cap): Teams can still sign players using exceptions (e.g., Bird Rights), but they cannot sign free agents with cap space.
Over the Luxury Tax Line: A progressive tax is paid on every dollar over.
First Apron (Approx. $196M in ’25-26):
Second Apron (Approx. $208M in ’25-26):
thanks rc u do know how rich our owner is though adams league suks with all this sht.nfl simple u have a hard salary cap dont go over.
if dumbot would have played wemby jr from day 1 instead of getting a mandate from pat to play the 64million pos i think wed be in a much better position than now.somehow someway your 2 best players need to figure how to play off each other.it took the goat and wade about 20 games.if they cant figure it out then trade one..there both 35 min guys wares not a backup.bams not a center ask jokic and ud.
Detroit: Herro for Stewart and Holland?
Houston: Herro for VanVleet and Capella?
Minnesota: Herro for Reid and *DiVincenzo?
* Torn achilles in Game 4. Will be out most/all of 2026-2027 when contract expires.
Herro is the best player in all those trades and the Heat rarely do a trade where the other team is getting the best player. I am guessing but I don’t see them changing their stance that Herro will only be traded for an All-NBA player.
Of the three the Detroit trade is the most intruiguing but I think there’s no chance Detroit would do that. Stewart is so important to them and is on a great contract at 15m per year. Holland isn’t getting minutes in the playoffs but is only 21 and has a ton of potential. Both of those guys play extremely hard and are definitely what the Heat or any team needs.
I would do the pistons or wolves trade. Pistons would do it, I think cuz like the article said they need more shooting, and reliable 2nd option after cade. Duren is like a 3rd or 4 option, but playing worst then that Currently these playoffs. Also beef stew is important but he can be replaced for them. Also Holland is still young, but looks worst then ausar, both have a broken jumpshot, or lack thereof. Players with broken jumpshots are the hardest fix, so they would likely trade him too, especially if he not in the rotation, and I’m pretty sure they need all the help they can get. But if not then trade herro and jovic for morant, or trade herro, jovic, and 2 future 2nd round picks for kawhi.
Using Riley’s own criteria of availability, Leonard and Ja would be very bad investments.
Agree to disagree on the Pistons, if I were them I wouldn’t do it. Stewart can guard the perimeter and the rim, hard to find skill for a big. Holland I think has too much upside to let go. For the Wolves trade Heat would be trading Herro for Reid straight up. Reid is an offense oriented big who has never averaged more than 14 ppg and makes $25m per season, 15% of the cap. He’s a solid player but lacks All-Star upside, would much rather have Herro’s increased production at $35m / 20% of cap.
Herro is on an expiring contract. I would trade him for a inferior player on an expiring contract plus a draft pick in a NY minute.
The goal this season is not to maintain a mediocre/play-in caliber team, but to build a team that can actually contend for a championship. That can be done through the draft, trades and development of existing players such as Ware, Jakucionis, Jaquez, Larsson, Gardner, Johnson, etc. Hocking half the team’s assets (young players and draft picks) would be counterproductive.
In a trade for Giannis, which would immediately make the Heat a contender for ECF winner, you wouldn’t need to trade half the team’s assets, only three players plus picks. Herro, Ware and picks are the foundation of a trade that looks pretty good in comparison to what other teams can offer.
Does Riley count Giannis being out this year? 😛
This is the move they probably try to make. It would be on brand.
Miami is barely functioning with Ware and Bam and no back-up PF/C (likely costing them a few games this season). Bam would prefer to play his natural position of PF, the same position Giannis plays. If you trade Ware and keep Bam playing out of position at C who would be his back-up and who would back-up Giannis? With Wiggins, Powell and Herro gone, who would be the team’s #2 scorer?
Giannis is currently under contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, with a three-year extension starting in 2025-26, featuring a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28. He is eligible for a massive four-year extension worth up to $275+ million ($68.75 per year) as early as 2026, which would span through 2030-31.
Bam’s contract runs through 2027-2028, with a player option in 2028-2029. He’ll be paid $49.8M next season, $53.8M in 2027-2028 with a player option of $57.7M in 2028-2029.
That’s a lot of money for 2 players.
-Bam has played center his whole career, he’s not out of position there just because he’s 6’9″. One example of Bam’s effectiveness, in his minutes this year the Heat were the #1 defensive rebounding team in the NBA. (Overall they were #8). Taller doesn’t necessarily mean better rebounder.
-A Bam/Giannis frontcourt is the best frontcourt in the league, just sign competent backups to be the third and fourth bigs (and maybe draft someone at #41). Giannis is one of very few to win both MVP and DPOY in the same season. He can still play defense but his game now is offense. You need defense and shooters around Giannis. Bam would be a perfect fit next to Giannis defensively.
-Agree that 4 years/$275m is a lot of money, but multiple teams are ready to pay it because Giannis is an all time great. The Heat are in a good position here imo because Giannis isn’t really a fit on the best teams in the league, OKC and SAS, who need to keep room to retain their own players under the new CBA, and other teams like NYK don’t have the picks to trade. Maybe Cleveland would trade Mobley if they lose in the playoffs, but Giannis also has say over where he goes since he’s now an expiring contract this year.
-For the #2 scorer, it could be Powell. Scoring wouldn’t be as much of a problem on a team with Giannis, he changes the entire offense.
What about Detroit, Houston, Charlotte, Boston,,..?
did u watch bam vs joker gobert vs joker bam is to small end of story.stick to stats man.
Healthy Joel Embiid also always gives Bam fits. Not a knock on Bam, but he does struggle when he has to go up against the likes of Jokic, Embiid, and Giannis. Bam is an elite center against 80% of the league. But there are obvious situations where the Heat need additional size alongside of him.
Jokic averages 26.1/10.7 against Gobert
https://www.landofbasketball.com/games_between/rudy_gobert_vs_nikola_jokic.htm
Before this playoffs he dominated that matchup, including games of 61, 56, 47 points. He always went at Gobert because Gobert is a 4x DPOY winner and made a point to show that Gobert couldn’t stop him. Before this year Gobert’s inability to limit Jokic’s scoring and others 1 v 1 was used as an argument that his defense was overrated (which was wrong)
Jokic averages 24.1/12.0 against Bam. Most he scored was 41
Gobert will be in the HOF because of his defense. Jokic’s numbers vs Gobert are similar vs Bam. And Bam also gives a team 20/10 on offense
Herro, Ware and Jaquez plus 2-4 picks. No Wiggins, No Powell. No Herro. No #2 or #3 scorer. No depth. Maybe they would get out of play-in and possibly the first round.
Here we go chasing windmills again. Wash, rinse, repeat. Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Hope in one hand and s**t in the other.
No idea what you’re talking about but a Giannis trade is likely, and Heat are in as good a position as any team to make that trade. It’s rare for an MVP to be available and if he wants to leave Milwaukee he has a lot of leverage over where he goes.
Take a look at Miami’s payroll and insert Giannis. Anybody can throw names out there, but you also need to consider and understand what all the implications will be. Tell me what your proposed trade would be and what the roster and payroll would look like in 2026-2027 and beyond. Take your time. I can wait.
Its the same offer that’s been reported since trade deadline. Picks, Herro, Ware, and others for matching salary that Milwaukee wants (Jaquez, Jakucionis but ideally Jovic)
