Report: Executives and agents around the league believe Giannis will be traded to the Heat

(Mandatory credit: Dylan Buell/Getty Images)

With the NBA Finals set to begin, the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade landscape is getting closer and closer to finally materializing into the superstar’s next destination.

There have been teams rumored to be in the mix— the Portland Trail Blazers, Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics and even the OKC Thunder. But none have come even close to the magnitude of reported aggression in pursuing an Antetokounmpo acquisition than the Miami Heat.

As a reminder, Milwaukee Bucks owner and front office representatives have iterated that they are seeking clarity on a long overdue Giannis trade by the June 23 NBA Draft. In doing so, the Bucks put themselves in position to make an extra first-round selection in this year’s draft lottery and reap instant benefits of their upcoming Giannis-less rebuilding era. Milwaukee owns the 10th overall pick and Miami has the 13th— with it being rumored that the Heat haven’t hosted even one single workout for that pick in anticipation that it will be part of an inevitable Giannis deal.

And according to The Athletic’s senior writer Sam Amick, there are executives and agents around the league that believe Antetokounmpo will ultimately be traded to the Heat:

“The noise surrounding the Miami Heat and Antetokounmpo remains louder than all the rest. Many people around the league, from agents to executives, continue to believe that Antetokounmpo will end up in Miami when this saga comes to an end…”

(per Sam Amick)

Amick also iterated that Antetokounmpo prefers to stay in the Eastern Conference, where he is a closer flight to his hometown in Greece and has better opportunity to regain control of a wide open East for years to come. But that’s not all that has been leaked in recent reports in regard to Miami’s link to Giannis.

Giannis has reportedly been eyeing up joining the Miami Heat since 2020

Jake Fischer, NBA insider of Bleacher Report and the Stein Line, revealed that he’s heard of interest in taking his talents to South Beach from Antetokounmpo for years now— dating all the way back to 2020.

“I still have Miami as the real kind of team that I’m pinpointing for (Giannis Antetokounmpo)… Miami has been a spot that’s been on his radar that I know definitively from various sources who are familiar with Giannis, that he’s been looking at the Heat dating back to 2020… The Heat have been on Giannis’ radar for the better part of this decade now.”

(per Jake Fischer)

This report would line up accurately to just how long the Heat have had interest in Giannis themselves. Pat Riley and the front office have repeatedly been aggressively attached to Antetokounmpo for years now, and they are assuredly motivated to finally make their whale dream come true with his long anticipated arrival to Miami.

There have been obstacles that have come in the way of these Heat-Giannis pursuits. Most recently, the Bucks backed out of all negotiations at this year’s February trade deadline in hopes of getting slightly better offers this summer.

Well, now this summer is vastly approaching, and Miami remains heavily in the mix. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Milwaukee “seriously considered” taking the Heat’s trade deadline offer in advanced negotiations between the two franchises a few months back.

Perhaps this time around, an extra asset or two can inevitably get Riley and company over this finish line.

“The Heat thing is real. The Heat offer is real…it’s pretty player & pick heavy. Why that’s important is because the Bucks have indicated that if you’re going to trade Giannis, they want picks & players. This checks that box…I think to me that’s the best package.”

There will be plenty of pissed off people around here if Giannis doesn’t end up in Miami.

There will also be plenty of pissed off people if Riley overpays for him and leaves the cupboards bare.

Everybody is going to be pissed off if Miami misses out on Giannis and Riley doesn’t have a legit Plan B or Plan C to fall back on.

Whatever Miami does, I hope it is a well thought out plan and not a last minute impulsive trade made out of desperation or simply to save face.

I definitely want Greek, but if we don’t get him, there are other options for trades, plus keeping future picks that can bear fruit in two to three seasons. Maybe not the 2026-27 season, but beyond. Greek would put is into the playoffs and it would depend roster as to if we get into the second round. Who’s hot, who’s not etc.

If they went with keeping the picks, I don’t see how they would be much worse than these last 3 seasons. But, yes, they would not be a contender until they add more after next season.

SunManFromDogBone

There have been many options for the past several years. Riley has simply chosen to ignore them. Herro should have been gone years ago. Riley has continued to do the same thing over and over again (running it back) expecting different results.

The jig is up Pat. Time to turn the reins over to a younger, more progressive GM/
President.

Thanks heat. I’m 73. I guess that means I have about 7 good years of usefulness left using the Riley scale.

I’ve been retired for 16 years and don’t plan to work another day of my life. This is the closest thing I’ve done to actual work in years.

I can’t wait to see what offer(s)/ counter offers Miami has made and what is ultimately accepted by the Bucks. It ain’t over until it’s over.

If Jaquez is part of the trade, I don’t see him wanting to sign an extension with Bucks. He’s a warm weather, SoCal, Latino boy. If anything, I can see him waiting until free agency and going, going, back, back to Cali. However, any city with a large Latino population will be better than Milwaukee.

That being the case, I can see Miami including Larsson and/or Jackucionis in the trade rather than Jaime. Herro, Ware, Larsson, Jakucionis and Jovic sounds about right for Giannis and his brothers.

2qbn
2qbn

Riley has ignored them? Your hate for Riley is blinding you. The Heat tried but in two instances, for example, he had Cronin deny to deal with him because he was scorned for Dame trying to force his way here. The other was the Heat did not want to give up Ware in a trade for Durant, which I think you would approve of.

But yeah, did nothing, tried nothing.

SunManFromDogBone
SunManFromDogBone
Reply to  2qbn

I would not have agreed to giving up Ware. I see much potential in him if he has a coach who knows how to bring the best out of him.

As far as Riley trying, they give participation trophies for that in little league. In pro sports you normally get a pink slip.

If you want Giannis bad enough, then everyone but Bam is expendable, starting with the white boys. Herro, Larsson, Jakucionis and Jovic (plus Ware) sounds about right for Giannis and at least one of his two brothers.

To be honest, I like all of Miami’s young guys, except Jovic, and would hate to see any of them go. Unlike you and others, I have the patience to see the “process” through.

Two lottery picks, a second rounder, time to develop our young players and cap space to go after a whale (or 2) in summer 2027 sounds pretty good to me. Then again, I’m looking for the team’s long-term success, not one last shot at glory for an aging GM and impatient fans.

Did you ever attend cultural sensitivity and diversity training classes? Jaquez is still a Latino. It hasn’t changed since you lumped him in with whites several times before. Do you consider any race or ethnicity that is not black (Asian, Native American, Hawaian/Pacific Islander, etc.) to be white? What you gonna lump in with whites next, light skinned blacks and creoles? Asking for a friend.

Full strength Heat would be the favorite vs Spurs without Wemby in a playoff series.

Spurs with Wemby were +16 in the regular season and playoffs, only +0.4 in the regular season and +0.2 in the playoffs without him.

Heat were +2.2 in regular season and 6.4 in Bam’s minutes. Norm/Wiggins/Davion/Bam played the most of any 4 man lineup and were +6.3

Spurs with Wemby = best team in the league by net rating along with OKC, justified Finals team, way better than Miami. Spurs without Wemby by net rating are an average team, would also have no one to guard Bam.

19/4/6 is good. Maybe doesn’t need to score as much as with Kings with a more balanced team. Never shot the 3 well.

I was a Knicks fan in the 60s. Clyde, The Pearl, Bradley, Jackson, DeBusschere, Russell, Reed.
