Heat still “most likely” destination for Giannis Antetokounmpo despite conflicting rumors

(Mandatory credit: Imagn Images)

There is still no resolution to the Giannis Antetokounmpo saga, although answers could finally come as soon as Tuesday’s June 23 NBA Draft.

That was the soft deadline suggested by Milwaukee Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam a while back, as the Bucks continue to seek compensation from this year’s draft in any Antetokounmpo deal. However, the Milwaukee front office has dragged this drama out for years now— and they are attempting to squeeze out the best and final offers hoping that someone presents a deal that truly satisfies them and then some.

The Miami Heat, as been the case for nearly the entire year of 2026 to date, remain at the top of the list as a premier Giannis suitor. Pat Riley and the Heat front office have made their pursuit for the former two-time league MVP and Defensive Player of the Year publicly well known. And they will be heavily involved in these sweepstakes until the very end. Other teams have been rumored to be in the mix, most notably the Boston Celtics.

Despite Boston making their rounds in the rumor mill recently for Antetokounmpo, not a single national media insider has revealed any intentions of the Celtics parting with Jaylen Brown. Brown’s insertion in talks quite literally makes or breaks their Giannis chances considering that they have very limited assets and draft capital to add to any potential package.

NBC Sports has revealed where Giannis Antetokounmpo talks currently stand

But according to NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin, he claims that league sources have “grown increasingly confident” that Antetokounmpo ultimately lands in South Beach when this is all said and done:

“Miami not only remains the most likely option according to league sources NBC Sports has spoken with, but also those sources have grown increasingly confident that Miami ultimately will be the spot. There’s growing skepticism about Boston’s seriousness.”

(via Kurt Helin)

Of course, the Bucks could always change their mind on their intentions to move on from Antetokounmpo like they’ve done in the past. But other than that unlikely scenario at this point, the Heat are still in the drivers seat.

Riley has circled on Antetokounmpo numerous times for years now. And Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald had iterated several times over the months that the Heat front office would be willing to unload every single non-Bam Adebayo asset that the organization has to offer to finally get this done. For all we know, negotiations could be a Kasparas Jakucionis inclusion away from an agreement. Perhaps a third or fourth team gets involved here, as the Detroit Pistons reportedly have had interest in Tyler Herro.

Unless some mystery team swoops in- similarly to how Milwaukee themselves stole Damian Lillard from Miami at the last minute in 2023- the Heat have appeared to be by far the most aggressive in acquiring Giannis. And with the NBA Finals concluded and the Draft vastly approaching, the clock is ticking. Especially if the Bucks want that 2026 first-round compensation as badly as it’s been reported.

The mutual interest between Antetokounmpo and the Heat is there. And it’s been there for a while. It’s up to this front office to perform the negotiating tactics and creativity to finally get this done.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the trade was announced this weekend during the holiday.

Don’t let the past necessarily paint the present day picture. I’m ready for some winning!

I trust the Milwaukee GM as much as I trust Portland’s. 0.0%. Riley should stick to his offer and stick to his guns. Take it or leave it. No Larsson and no Jakucionis. If push comes to shove, throw in the 2026 second round pick.

If that doesn’t move the needle by draft day, go on to either Kahwi or a one year rebuild plan. Trae or Ja would be big gambles and probably big mistakes. Miami has the youth, draft picks and other options available to go whale hunting a year from now. It’s time to play hardball Pat.

If the deal falls through because Buck’s management is stubborn, they will have a disgruntled Giannis to deal with, especially if Miami has presented the best offer.

As Kenny Rogers sang: You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away and know when to run. Right now is the time for Miami to hold em and if nothing is resolved by next Tuesday morning, it will be the time to walk away. If the Bucks continue to hold out after that and Pat continues to hold on, he is a fool.

End of this saga would be a huge relieve.

And yes, only one of JJJ, Kas and Pelle should stay. I don’t mind about picks.

When I read the phrase “soft deadline” my stomach churned a little. If this turns into a similar debacle to last year at the deadline, which it bears strong resemblance to thus far, it will be on Riley to know when enough is enough. The Bucks GM could pull Giannis again, despite all the reporting. Right now, the Bucks are using us for leverage, holding us hostage if we let them. When our pick comes up, it will be time for the charade to end and us to be planning for ourselves.

If a trade isn’t Final, Miami better not draft a Shabazz to accommodate a trade that may not happen.

So the Celtics offer didn’t blow them away, huh? Round and round we go.

I still think the draft is the deadline. The Heat can’t be foolish enough to draft a player for the Bucks if a deal isn’t finalized. And Miami’s offer would clearly be diminished after the draft unless both franchises hadn’t keyed on the same player.

There might some minor details here and there, but Heat and Celtics have put in their offer. Other teams have been hearing about this for at least two weeks. I think there is no new team or offer, so they can wait by the phone, but the time is now. I think we hear something by this weekend.

As my family and friends used to say in the old country (Brooklyn), ‘sht or get off the pot!’
