Assessing Heat’s chances to acquire this veteran Nuggets wing

There’s no question that the next few weeks for the Miami Heat are quite important.

After acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Heat have plenty of holes to fill without much financial flexibility or assets. They still have to fill out a roster, but they don’t have many avenues at their disposal.

That’s not stopping them from canvassing the league just in case something pops up. Out West, the Denver Nuggets are one notable team looking to shave money off their tax bill, with Cam Johnson potentially being on the chopping block. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Heat are one of many teams that have gauged interest in the veteran wing.

Meanwhile, as the Nuggets navigate getting below the second apron, sharpshooting forward Cam Johnson has drawn trade interest from several teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, and Orlando Magic, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote earlier this week.

Evaluating Heat’s chances at acquiring Cameron Johnson:

Andrew Wiggins’ new three-year extension may make it difficult to seamlessly fit Johnson. But the on-court fit alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo is undeniable.

Last season, he averaged 12.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists on a career-best 43.0 percent shooting from 3-point range. He struggled in Denver. But at his height, Johnson is a good connector who can knock down threes, score at multiple levels with capable team defense.

Johnson is also entering the final year of his contract with a $23.1 million cap hit. The most likely trade candidate would be young Heat wing Nikola Jovic, coming off a down season with four years, $62.4 million left on his contract.

There’s uncertainty whether Denver would want to absorb that salary with limited future flexibility. Wiggins playing on his $30.2 million cap hit this upcoming season didn’t make life easier for the Heat’s 2026-27 roster construction. Johnson would provide the Heat some flexibility as an expiring, and he would be a clear upgrade over Jovic.

But it takes two to tango at the end of the day.

Theoretically a 6’10” forward with a quick release from three would pair great with Giannis and Bam.

He’s only 22. And defensively he’ll be perfectly fine with Bam, Giannis, Dav and Wiggins next to him.

Gotta give the kid plenty of time early in the season. Consistently. Play him with Simone and let them get up shots (shots shots).

There are three possible ways Heat will go:

-fill the team with low cost vets.
-Trade Wiggins for multiple players.
-Trade Portis for multiple players.

Trading Niko is not realistic right now, but it could be next year, if he plays well.

It could be much earlier if it looks like his mojo has returned during FIFA games this summer.

Vincent, Beal, Simmons, Burks, Payton II, Clarkson, Spencer, Yabusele, Fontecchio, Bagley, Westbrook, Drummond, Landale, Ellis, Okogie, Brown (Bruce), Mamukelashvili, Richards, Hayes, Grimes, Smart, Thomas, Ivey, Anthony.

Pick any 4.

Love this, but due to financial constraints, I think we have to replace Mamu with Landale.

True that, and I’m ok with having a jock on the team.

Landale signed for a tad more than minimum

Vincent, Simmons, Hathaway, Landale is all we can afford and would seal most of holes in some degree.

Mamu, Brown, Richards, Grimes would seal them totally, but the price would be by far too high.

Middy and Beal are serious injury risks. I think we need to mitigate our exposure to such an incident and diversify our portfolio with younger options. I’m cool with some vets. You need them. But if Hardaway is already on the team, then Beal is all I would risk and leave Middy off. The problem is Giannis might want Middy.

Denver is the only team that would possibly take Jovic at this time. After playing on the Serbian team this summer with Jokic his value may increase. Hopefully, it will be to the point where he can either earn a rotation spot or be traded. Front court players are in big demand in the NBA nowadays

Shid I hope so, cam would be a welcome addition. Had a career year from beyond the arc. Still plays solid D, and imagine him in the starting lineup, we would have a jumbo lineup with everyone being over 6’7, except Davion, and everyone playing good D. They would be At least a top 3 D. Also James Jones drafted him, so he has some heat DNA in him.
