This new Giannis Antetokounmpo Miami Heat build is in need of at least one more supplemental shooting piece. Why not one of the greatest 3-point shooters in NBA history?
As first initially reported by 5 Reasons Sports insider Ethan Skolnick, and more recently confirmed by the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson on Monday— Miami is seriously interested in acquiring Dallas Mavericks’ sharpshooter Klay Thompson.
Thompson is coming off a 2025-26 campaign in which he saw a dip in playing time, but still averaged nearly 12 points per game on 38.3% shooting from deep. The 36-year-old guard is a four-time NBA champion, five-time league All-Star and is ranked fourth in all-time 3-pointers made. He trails former Heat legend and 2013 Champion Ray Allen by just 74 three’s to eclipse third highest on the list.
The Heat hold genuine interest in adding Klay Thompson— whether or not they sign LeBron James.
Miami still has three open roster spots while they await James’ decision, but shooting remains a priority in their post-Antetokounmpo trade plans this summer. The former Golden State Warriors’ “splash brother” has always been known as elite of a floor spreader as they come, while also shown signs of being a strong defender throughout his Hall of Fame career.
However, considering he is still going into the last year of his contract, a Thompson addition would need to be maneuvered with the help of Dallas via trade or Thompson himself by leaving money on the table with a buyout. Orchestrating a buyout would make him an unrestricted free agent.
It’s unclear whether the Heat would have interest in potentially offloading Nikola Jovic and perhaps a second-round pick to trade for Thompson. But considering it could work financially, that type of framework is worth keeping tabs on moving forward.

38% shooter with greek will go to 40% .can klaY guard is the big ?
Thompson adds nothing to the Heat that is not already provided by Simone Fontecchio.
Thompson’s defense has deteriorated substantially in the past five years.
2021-2022: 110.0.
2022-2023: 116.6
2023-2024: 117.8
2024-2025: 118.6
2025-2026: 119.8
On the other hand, Fontecchio’s defensive rating was 115.1 in 2024-2025 and 116.0 in 2025-2026.
In 2025-2026, Thompson’s 3 point % was 38.3. Fontecchio’s was 37.5.
I would save the money for a big or another playmaker.
hes got the rep and name thats better than fonzi.id rather have klay entering the game than fonzi.ethans reported hes been down here alot.
If he’s that good Mavs would have kept him or Warriors would pick him up. Problem is Heat already paid for Fonzi and Hardaway. If James signs elsewhere, Heat has a choice of other players to sign with different skill sets (e.g., Westbrook, DeRozan, Thybulle, Brown, Richards, Mathurin, etc.).
agree. And he can be expensive.
please explain how defensive rating is scored.duncs guy gets by him is met by bam who stones him is that a positiveor negative rating for unc.dunc goes for double his guy is now wide open who tyler picks up and burys a 3 is that negative for tyler or uncan.watch the games sm the tube will tell u.for me the two worse guarders in nba hands down dont think its close are unc and zerro d.name me a few that are worse
Trae Young, Jordan Poole, Clarkson, Simons, Beal, Brunson, Bey, Hunter, Reaves, Trent…
Sexton, Mann, McDermott, LaVine, Thomas. Doesn’t matter what proof anyone can point to when somebody wears blinders and can only see what’s directly in front of him.
Going to be hard to get someone to take Niko, contract and all. Otherwise, if it can be done somehow, Thompson is not a bad addition.
whover takes it will have to be tested for drugs
Late to the party to drive discussion, HHH 😛
