The Miami Heat made a franchise-altering move to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo last month. But they’re not done, as they’re strongly pursuing a potential reunion with free agent LeBron James.
Whether he chooses Miami, Philadelphia, goes home to Cleveland or unites with Stephen Curry in Golden State, the league is on hold until then.
After his introductory press conference with the Heat, Antetokounmpo, when asked about the idea of playing with James, was quite complimentary.
“If there was a scenario for that to happen, I’d be very, very excited,” Antetokounmpo said, according to ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “He’s one of the best players to ever play this game, if not the best. [I’d] be able to learn so much from him. Obviously, brings such a championship experience to the team right from day one. I think he’s still one of the best players in the [game today], if not top 25 [at 41 years old]. You don’t see signs of him slowing down at all. You saw in the playoffs how effective and good he was for the Lakers.
“But I’m just like everybody else — we don’t have all the information. All the information is in LeBron James’ hand and his family’s hands, and he’s going to make the best decision for him. The history has shown that he’s always made good decisions for his career. And I hope if he thinks that the Miami Heat’s a good decision for him, I would love for him to be here.”

There’s no selling short how big this week was for the Miami Heat. Antetokounmpo is the best player the Heat has acquired since adding James (and Chris Bosh) in 2010. He’s a perennial MVP candidate and still in the thick of his prime.
In Pat Riley’s words, they landed a 747 aircraft, when in actuality, they landed an A380.
While I continue to have lingering concerns about how the Heat fortify the rest of their roster, their offseason has been a remarkable success. James’ decision shouldn’t dim that.
But, like everyone else, the Heat is waiting for the 22-time All-Star to make potentially the final big free agency decision of his career. He would immediately vault the Heat from a top-4 seed into potential Eastern Conference favorites, presuming they can stay healthy.
James has never been flanked by two defenders the caliber of Antetokounmpo or Adebayo. His fit, offensively, would be pretty seamless. Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra would have a joyous time staggering different combinations to maximize the James-Adebayo-Giannis triumvirate, and there would be myriad offensive actions to utilize.
For James, however, it’s about happiness. At this current juncture, nobody — other than maybe Rich Paul — knows what he’s thinking. So the best thing we can do is only ponder — and daydream — about the potential ceiling the aforementioned trio presents.

Been crazy watching the prediction markets flip flop, and Vegas too. I know many people here wanted to move on, or LeBron to hurry up. I’ve found this as interesting as anything in what is a slow major sports period.
Also if Miami does end up with LeBron, they probably landed the biggest difference maker they could have, given the cap restraints.

Agree SunMan. Silver totally botched the Rozier debacle. His main focus remains on expansion to Seattle & Vegas…plus Europe. This new free throw concept tried at Summer League is complete crap. Hate it. Thinking blue sky with LeBron coming back. He’ll get the ball in his hands here vs sharing with Cav’s Harden, Mitchell or Maxey & VJ with Sixers. We shall see…
Given Adam Silver’s complaining about it, I kind of hope LeBron drags this out forever. Just kind of hilarious that the NBA has been brought to a stand still by a 41 year old, because the league hasn’t done a good job of creating new faces of the league.
All the rules designed to prevent super teams, have also held back a generation of talent from becoming LeBron or Steph.
And so now, likely the last time he can, LeBron is going to dominate headlines until he makes his decision and the NBA is stuck waiting.
Adam Silver needs to retire. I can’t forgive him for shafting Miami in the Rozier fiasco.
His failure to reveal relevant negative information regarding alleged illegal gambling activities by Rozier denied Miami’s ability to make an informed decision.
As a result, it cost cost Miami over $60M, a first round pick and 1+ seasons. Rather than rectify his mistake, he compounded it by throwing the Heat a bone (2nd round pick) and expected fans to accept that as a resolution. It didn’t.
The NBA Commissioner needs to be ethical and have a spine. Silver fails miserably on both counts.
