LeBron James finally made his free agent decision— after nearly four weeks of waiting— and it wasn’t the Miami Heat.
The Heat, along with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors, all got burned in James’ waiting game just to ultimately shock the world in signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for a two-year $8 million deal.
Following Miami’s Giannis Antetokounmpo acquisition, a James free agent addition would have instantly doubled down on the team’s title aspirations next season. To add a player of that caliber at a veteran minimum price tag would have been huge. But instead it’s the rival Sixers who pull off this new super team era with James alongside Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey.
The Heat had a compelling pitch for LeBron James:
ESPN’s Shams Charania iterated that Miami was in this until the day of his decision— noting that the Heat presented a “compelling pitch” to add the star.
Miami could have formed a new Big 3 of Antetokounmpo, James and Bam Adebayo, along with arguably the greatest coach in the league in Erik Spoelstra. They still had intriguing depth pieces to surround them. The story, history and legacy fit was there, as the front office and staff remains with the same core and stability from James’ original Heat tenure back in 2010-2014. Living in South Florida would have just been an added bonus to all of this.
At the end of the day, James felt that Philadelphia presented a better chance to win a championship than this Heat team.
Rich Paul revealed that he thought LeBron was going to choose Miami.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, she stated that she spoke to James’ agent Rich Paul on this decision. And Paul revealed that for a long time throughout these past few weeks, he thought James was indeed set on returning to the Heat— but explained the thought process in ultimately deciding against it.
“I spoke to Rich Paul about that (turning down Miami) about an hour ago. He said for a lot of the time he thought it was going to end up being Miami.”
“That seemed to be a nice fit and story but he said ‘when you been to a place before, when you won at a place before, if you go back it may not be the same.’ You kind of want to leave those memories where they were, as they are. They had a great time together when they won two titles down in Miami.”

It evidently seemed like the Heat had a real shot at pulling off this reunion. James is responsible for two of the franchise’s three championships, in which he earned Finals MVP in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013.
Instead, now Miami will have to battle against their former superstar in a loaded Eastern Conference— as the focus now shifts to finally filling out the rest of their 2026-27 roster this summer.

If that was the case, why didn’t he just let Miami and Cleveland know early on that he wouldn’t be returning?
Good question.
Maybe now I will take my LeBron shot here. There is some uncertainty how long he can endure. He still had a lot left last year, but had clearly lost a step, going from a high A+ player to a solid A- level player. Will he continue to lose efficiency, probably, but how much is an unknown. If he stays at last years level he will still be a very good asset. But, if he drops off anymore, he starts to fall into a Paul George-ish talent level, which is where he stops moving the needle as much. And, by the following season, that scenario becomes likely.
I still wish he came here, especially because he came so cheap.
Combination of possible reasons:
drama queen maximizing/extending his media attention,
passive aggressive behavior (especially towards Riley/Heat) and
leverage over team management/coach he decided to play for.
He knew from the start Philadelphia was the most talented NBA team.
One other possibility is it allowed the Sixers time to line up free agents to sign up immediately after his announcement.
FYI…the Grizzlies and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, finalized his buyout today, allowing him to join Philadelphia and giving the Sixers a veteran wing shooter and defender just one day after the team signed LeBron James.

i believe rc my opinion he wanted to play with steph and i believe they were trying to get ad there.never happened there were rumors but never happened.that wash team in a few years might be pretty good soon.i believe he doesnt like pat or any team with james harden so u could have prob eliminated heat cavs based on that.when primadonas dont get their way it was never gonna happen with him down here.the east is def better than the west now especially if that kawhi deal goes through.
You believe a lot of things that have very little, if any, data to back it up. You pushed back at me several times when I said it didn’t appear that the Wizards wanted to trade AD. I’m sure he could be traded if the right deal came along, but a Butler who is more broken down than AD wasn’t it. GS would have been more possible in the past, but with OKC and Spurs and even Wolves in the West, I doubt GS could get to the finals with or without him. The East was the best path. I think the Heat can compete with anyone this season and we still have 2-3 more players that will be joining.
