The Miami Heat don’t have very many avenues to add talent entering the new season.
With less than two months until the start of camp, Miami has three open roster spots — two of which they will fill by opening night. Miami is currently $2.0 million from the luxury tax and $10.6 million below the $209.015MM first apron.
The Heat did most of their work by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, re-signing Simone Fontecchio and adding Tim Hardaway Jr. But outside of their mid-level exception, it has one more way it can still add talent: Trade Exception!
Heat has less than one week to use final trade exception:
The Miami Heat entered the summer with two trade exceptions: One worth $16.8 million and a smaller one worth $5.6 million.
Those two exceptions were generated from the Duncan Robinson and Haywood Highsmith trades made last summer. A TPE is a mechanism used to acquire players without sending back additional salary, and can be created by trading a player away without taking back salary. Since they absorbed Simone Fontecchio’s $8.3 million into a separate TPE, the Heat were able to generate a $16.8 million TPE from the departing Robinson, who signed with Detroit.
Miami used up $14.5 million of that aforementioned trade exception to acquire Bobby Portis in the Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster. While there was still some remaining, that exception expired in early July; each TPE created must be used within one calendar year.
The smaller TPE, however, still has a shelf life that’ll expire on Aug. 15.
A list of possible candidates to target:
Most trade exceptions go unused. This one will likely will, too.
Assuming they do use it, however, here is a list of candidates I would target, in no specific order:
- Yves Missi
- Julian Strawther
- Thomas Sorber
- Paul Reed
- Cam Spencer
- Jay Huff
- Brice Sensabaugh

We finally signed guys! Jk. We “signed” Exhibit 10 guys but it can’t be finalized until we add two more players, so the good news is the intent is there to sign bodies. lol
At this point I’m just hoping we get Klay. DeMar is the backup plan.

“You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em”… This is the time to hold em unless Heat can pick up 2 good rotation players who can make a difference.
They have the TPE but no assets to trade for those players. With just the $10m total left to spend, using most of that to sign Klay and cover a buyout with Dallas is one move that would improve their postseason chances.

Spencer would be the priority, he had a breakout year last season. Sensabaugh is the second priority. The rest is a no.
I think the Heat could turn Missi into a solid player.

Has multiple year contract with OKC. Who/what does Miami have to offer in trade.
A position of need, 22, athletic. I liked him coming out of that draft. It’d be a good move.
Missi and a shooter and call it a day. Who/what do you trade for him?

Philadelphia may be considering trading for him.
Either of those 2 would help.
