Why Erik Spoelstra could finally earn this coveted award in 2026-27

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has a lot of hardware.

Entering his 20th season, Spoelstra has played a part in each of the franchise’s three titles. He won a title as Pat Riley’s assistant, and two more as the primary leader on the sidelines. He’s also won four Eastern Conference Titles and was even dubbed one of the NBA’s 15 greatest coaches in 2021-22.

Spoelstra has guided eight teams that cracked 45 wins, including four 50-win team and one 60-win team in 2012-13. His defensive expertise and timely ATO execution have made him one of the NBA’s best tacticians.

Yet, there’s one award missing from his trophy case: A Coach of the Year award.

With Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo captaining the ship, will he win one? According to a recent ESPN poll, that’s still not the case. The network forecasted a top-5 list of who could earn the COY award, with Spoelstra’s name absent.

The names mentioned reads as follows: Indiana’s Rick Carlisle, San Antonio’s Mitch Johnson, Utah’s Will Hardy, Minnesota’s Chris Finch and Philadelphia’s Nick Nurse.

“Predicting the NBA Coach of the Year is often a crapshoot,” ESPN’s Jamal Collier wrote. “It’s an award given to the coach of the team that overachieved expectations, such as the 2025-26 winner, Boston’s Joe Mazzulla, who didn’t even appear in the top five of the voting last season.

“The unpredictability of the award is why the poll for this season was so close, and each of the top three vote-getters has vastly different preseason cases for why they could be in the mix.”

Why Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra could enter fray for the Coach of the Year this season:

As we previously documented, the Eastern Conference remains open for the taking heading into the 2026-27 season.

No, that’s not disrespect toward the defending-champion New York Knicks. They possess the crown until they’re unseated.

But the new-look Heat have as good of a chance as any of them to usurp them.

Forget what potentially happens between the two teams in a seven-game series, Miami has an excellent chance to be a top-3/4 team in the East during the regular season. And that’s the most important factor.

Perhaps the biggest knock on Spoelstra heading into the season, which could inevitably be used in an argument for winning the award if the Heat outkick their coverage, is the last four seasons.

We can be honest: Spoelstra’s coaching job the last four seasons, save for the Heat’s miraculous postseason run in 2023, has been well below standard, resulting in four consecutive play-in appearances. Miami has teetered with mediocrity, but it now has a perennial MVP candidate in Antetokounmpo plus a budding supporting cast capable of rising to the occasion.

The Heat will be one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. They now have multiple knockdown shooters in Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Ryan Conwell, among others; they also have more depth and length in the frontcourt in years past; and they have two horses in Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, both in the middle of their physical prime.

Their guard play lacks outside of Davion Mitchell, but they still have enough to squeak by throughout an 82-game season. Throw in Spoelstra’s devil magic, and the Heat will be a gigantic pain in the ***you know what*** to play every other night.

If the Heat surpass the 50-win mark, Spoelstra will unquestionably be in that mix. Depending on who else does well, how he’s guided the last few years may ding him, but this year’s games still have to be played! Nothing is guaranteed, nor is anyone entitled to anything.

Miami — and Spoelstra — will have to earn it with their play on the court.

Kind of early to be speculating on COY. If Miami wins the EC Finals, then we can begin having that conversation.

Couldn’t disagree more that Spo’s coaching has been below standard, it’s just the W-L results that have. Miami’s player development is still as good as anywhere in the NBA, Larsson is the latest example. The #1 pace offense last year was innovative and successful in many ways, not many coaches would have even tried it or gotten the buy in to make it work. Spo was a COY pick last year also, the only difference this year is he has a more talented team.

Woj two years ago on Spo’s record $120m extension:

“The Heat are acknowledging what everyone in the league knows, Erik Spoelstra is the best coach in the NBA. If you had a draft, you made every coach available, he’d be the #1 overall pick. And what’s unique about that is it wouldn’t matter if you had a team in a rebuild, you had a team in the middle you were trying to get to the playoffs, or you had a championship team, because he’s shown he can coach all of them.”

Yup, and I still am. The statement above is exactly how I feel. If there was a draft for coaches, Spo would be chosen no less than top 3 regardless of the makeup of the team he was going to. If he left the team today, there would be a line around the block of teams wanting to hire him. There is a reason for that.

No argument he is a top coach. He should have been coach of year in 2020 or 2023. Now he has a chance to prove he is worthy with a much better team…top to bottom

We have had moments where we see things differently. As I’ve said, it’s perfectly fine to have different opinions on a given subject. But it’s not that I don’t respect your knowledge. Therefore, I’d be curious about your opinion on one of the dozens of made up trade proposals out there. It was Jovic and a first for Scoot Henderson. He came back from that severe hamstring injury and only played 30 games last season. I know he has some deficiencies, but I was intrigued with the idea of adding a young athletic player in a position of need. What’s your take?

The cost of that trade is the issue, I would not trade a first for Scoot and to me Portland is the clear winner of that trade. For the Heat there are limited ways to improve this team and that trade gives up two, the first and Jovic having a bounce back season and his contract becoming positive value.

Scoot’s extension amount next year is unclear, 18-20m or more, no one seems to know right now and a lot is riding on this year for him as an upcoming RFA. He’s in a crowded guard rotation, I get why he would want out of Portland. I think he could be a Heat type of player but I’d rather have Davion at starting PG this year.

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of the first round pick either. And I am one of only a few who still think Jovic can become productive. But he is an intriguing player, they have a glut of guards over there, and it’s doubtful there would be any Jrue buyout anytime soon. Appreciate the input and we can get back to disagreeing after this short intermission 😀.

They must give Jovic the benefit of the doubt. Innocent until proven guilty. He already has their money.

A lot is riding on him finding his mojo/self-confidence. Our second unit could be impressive if everything goes just right.

I think there are many who think Jovic can bounce back, they just don’t post often here. Only a year ago, right before the Heat extended Jovic, Zach Lowe and Fred Katz were saying the time to extend him was then because the Heat couldn’t risk someone offering him $25m in RFA.

I’m rooting for Jovic also. We almost have no choice but to do so as he will be hard to trade. And he also plays such an important position, a position where we really are pretty thin at, and we would be a much better team if he succeeds. But still, he will need to earn his minutes just like anyone else. Just because we paid him is not reason enough to keep playing him if he isn’t performing. All we can do as fans is hope for the best. In the best case scenario, he could be a key factor in this team being much deeper and harder to beat.

I believe what Houseman used to say in the Smith Barney ads: “They make money the old fashioned way- they earn it.” It has to be like that for Jovic.

Brooklyn has a plethora of PGs. I wonder what it would take to get one.

Heat would have to be at least the 2 seed going into the playoffs for Spo to win it
