Heat rookie receives positive injury update ahead of game against Nuggets

Only two Miami Heat players (not named Terry Rozier, who’s been on leave since Oct. 23) on the team’s 15-man roster have yet to appear in a game so far this season.

One of them, guard Tyler Herro, underwent foot surgery in September and won’t be returning until mid-November, at the earliest.

The other is rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis, who was limited to just two preseason games before spraining his left wrist.

Well, we received a positive injury report for the latter, who was upgraded to questionable ahead of Wednesday’s contest against the Denver Nuggets, the final of the team’s four-game road trip.

Kasparas Jakucionis still has steep hill to climb for consistent rotation minutes:

In a perfect world, there would be a clear runway for Jakucionis, the Heat’s No. 20 overall selection in last June’s draft.

That’s not the case, though. Miami’s bench — led by Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Simone Fontecchio — has been one of the NBA’s best early in the season. Currently, their second unit remains atop the leaderboard in NET Rating (plus-6.9) and true-shooting percentage (64.8) with the fourth-best offense.

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has gone 10 deep (or nine when Powell’s been absent), consisting of a mix of Jaquez, Fontecchio, Nikola Jovic, Pelle Larsson, Kel’el Ware and Dru Smith.

Jakucionis is a perfect fit for the Heat’s new up-tempo style. He’s a very quick and astute decision-maker; Jakucionis knows how to read and react, a requisite for operating with pace.

Perhaps Spoelstra throws him into the fire and sees how reacts. But he will have a hill to climb to lobby minutes over Smith, who hasn’t missed a beat, Larsson and Fontecchio, who’s 20-of-39 from 3-point range this season.

If the Heat continue to play at this pace, Spoelstra will need to go at least 10 or 11 deep. The mileage on the legs will eventually catch up. You need fresh bodies, and while I think Jakucionis should be one of them, I’m tempering expectations that he’s one of them … for now.
