Heat reportedly have interest in Jonathan Kuminga

Miami Heat guard Davion Mitchell was one of 11 players who became trade-eligible on Thursday.

Another was Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, who signed a two-year, $47 million deal in restricted free agency with the team last offseason. Kuminga, who has not appeared in the Warriors’ last 13 games, is demanding a trade, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater.

The fourth-year forward was linked to Miami during free agency, though the Heat did not have any cap space to sign him. He was also a name floated as a potential returning piece in any Jimmy Butler-Warriors trade, though the Heat opted to acquired Andrew Wiggins instead.

Could they have interest?! According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, they would.

Kuminga, 23, is averaging just 11.8 points and 6.2 assists on 43.1 percent shooting and 32.0 percent from 3-point range. His tenure with Golden State was pretty rocky, breaking out in 2023-24 before a rocky last couple of seasons marred by inconsistency.

The former No. 7 overall pick is making $22.5 million this season with a $24.3 million team option. Charania and Slater listed the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks as potential suitors, but stated that, “several other teams are also in the mix because of his flexible contract structure.”

According to report, Golden State will be prioritizing “prioritizing expiring contracts.” The Heat’s expiring contracts include Terry Rozier — who’s embroiled in a federal gambling probe — Simone Fontecchio and Norman Powell, who’s been the team’s best offensive player through 40 games.

There’s no guarantee he gets moved. But Kuminga does offer intriguing upside, even though he hasn’t necessarily impacted winning in his time with the Warriors.

I’m a hard pass on Kuminga. Spo won’t play the kids here, why would he play Kuminga? Ware, Jovic, Kasparas have far fewer minutes than they should for a team that isn’t competing for a title. Why add another player to that mix?

I love it. Now the Heat has options. And they all are potential upgrades. No one can just leverage us. We leverage them. This team might just improve itself. The disgruntled player, once a fairly rare occurrence, is becoming more commonplace. And,,shrewd GM’s can certainly take advantage. Kuminga is another player who can use a change of scenery. The upside is less than Morant, but the floor is higher when considering the availability factor and the lower cost.

Because he was hurt at the time and was up for a contract. This is a much better route IF they end up with Wiggins and get Kuminga for some expiring deals.
