There have been six teams in NBA History who have players win consecutive 3-point contest titles.
The Miami Heat will not be one of those teams — at least not for now.
One year after Heat guard Tyler Herro took home the award, first-year Heat guard Norman Powell was named a participant. However, the 11-year veteran was eliminated in the first round for the second-straight year.
Of the eight names who competed in the shootout this year, only three advance past the first round. Despite scoring 23 points, Powell finished behind Phoenix’s Devin Booker (30), Portland’s Damian Lillard (27) and Charlotte’s Kon Knueppel (27) — who advanced — as well as Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell (24).
Even though he’s currently recovering from a torn achilles, Lillard evidently took home the crown for the third time in his career. His 29 points in the championship round held off Booker’s 27.
Through 45 games, Powell, 32, is averaging a career-high 23.0 points, to go with 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He’s shooting 47.4 percent from the floor, 39.6 percent from 3-point range and 84.3 percent from the free-throw line.
