It did not take one day for the Miami Heat to fill their final open roster spot.
In fact, it barely took over 12 hours.
Hours after officially releasing guard Terry Rozier, the Miami Heat converted two-way guard Jahmir Young to a two-year non-guaranteed deal, the Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang first reported Friday evening.
After an encouraging stint in the preseason, the Heat inked Young, 25, to a two-way contract last October. Once an undrafted free agent at the conclusion of the 2024 NBA Draft, Young spent his first professional season in the Denver Nuggets and Chicago Bulls’ organizations, where he averaged 21.7 points, 7.1 assists and 1.9 steals in 43 combined regular season games.
Young also spent the majority of his second season in Sioux Falls with the Skyforce, the Heat’s G-League affiliate. Young was excellent, averaging 25.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 1.8 steals on 46.1/36.0/83.9 shooting splits. He had nine 30-point performances, including a 36-point showing against the Salt Lake City Stars on Jan. 18.
Young parlayed his strong season into an appearance for the Rising Stars game, albeit as a replacement.
Now, it remains to be seen whether or not he will be a functional NBA guard. He’s not big in stature — standing at 6-foot, 185 pounds — while only having appeared in just 18 career games, logging 84 combined minutes. He’s scored 33 points with 13 assists on 13-of-28 shooting and 3-of-10 from distance over that small sample.
It’s disappointing the Heat did not waive Rozier — and subsequently use their open roster spot — sooner. But if there was a backup big available that Erik Spoelstra would’ve trusted (it was slim pickings), they would have, for better or worse.
Instead, Jahmir Young will now pocket an extra ~$26K. Good for him!

Heat must make shocking Erik Spoelstra move that completely changed the Celtics (Heat may need to shake up the front office)
It’s time for changes in Miami
It may be time for the Heat to shake up the front office. And the clearest – and most realistic – way to accomplish that is by moving Spo from the bench to the front office.
And because it has worked out so well for the Celtics, it’s not that outlandish an idea for the Heat to follow through with. Because if the Heat can get even a fraction of that success by doing the same with Spo, it’d be completely worth the gamble.
The Heat’s solution to revitalizing the franchise and its front office may be hiding in plain sight.
“So you’re telling me there’s a chance”
If Miami beats Atlanta and Charlotte loses to the Knicks, the Heat will get the 9th seed and will host the 10th seed Hornets in the first play-in game. The winner of that game will play the loser of the #7 vs #8 game for the opportunity to land the 8th and final playoff spot and the right to play Detroit in the first round.

While Detroit (1), Boston (2), New York (3), and Cleveland (4) are locked into the top four playoff spots, their final opponents will be determined by the outcome of the 5-10 seed chaos on the final day.
In the spirit of what I believe will ultimately be the best path for the team’s future, I hope we don’t get that chance.
I agree. Time to end this season and prepare for the future.
Exhibit 10/training camp to two-way to standard non guaranteed contract in one season. Great story and hopefully next step is a guaranteed contract
The furious pace of preparations for the 9-10 play-in spot have commenced. This is edge of your seat stuff. Dont forget to take your beta blockers or anti-coagulants.
meaningful game for mickey
Plus a little sumpin sumpin.
why not have done this81 games ago did mickey want to save some $$
Partly. Holding that contract may give them a better chance of getting reimbursed if Rozier is found guilty or pleads out. The other part was that pesky cap apron stuff and the penalties that go with it.
Congratulations to Jahmir! Not big, but athletic, is a scorer, and dishes out a lot of dimes. With 4 pg now on the roster, maybe it means they are set on drafting a big. I’ve been saying if Landeborg is available, he’d be a good one.
at least hes young
Sly dog. I see what you did there.
