Davion Mitchell EXCLUSIVE interview: Miami Heat guard talks Call of Duty, upcoming season and more

As the Miami Heat finally approach the official start to an exciting 2026-27 season, we at Hot Hot Hoops had the opportunity to sit down with the team’s starting point guard Davion Mitchell.

In an exclusive interview, Mitchell discussed one of his off-the-court hobbies in gaming— ahead of the October 23 global release of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4; a game that Mitchell regularly likes to play on his free time.

Additionally, Mitchell took the time to speak on some Heat hoops ahead of this upcoming campaign.

Here are just some of the notable quotes from the Heat guard, along with access to the full interview below:

  • Q: What were your thoughts about the Heat’s Giannis trade earlier this summer and how much do you think his addition instantly elevates this team?

Davion: “I mean obviously the trade was amazing… When you have one of the greatest players on your team, the level of everything is going to go up. Just his presence, the gravity that he brings, how much attention he brings it just makes everyone’s job a lot easier.”

  • Q: What are some of the things that you worked on over the offseason to improve your game?

Davion: “Obviously just the little things of shooting, passing… But I think just the mental side as well— the confidence. I worked on my body a lot, got a lot more slimmer, lighter.”

  • Q: What’s the biggest difference between the player you are now and the player you were when you entered the league?

Davion: “Like I said before I think my mind, the way I look at things and carry myself. Just working smarter… sleep, eating right, taking care of my body… watching more film.”

  • Q: What are your individual and statistical goals for this upcoming season?

Davion: “My individual goal is to win Defensive Player of the Year. It’s all I got. No statistical goals— that Defensive Player of the Year is just one of my goals.”

  • Q: What is it about the defensive side of the floor that makes you so dedicated to that part of your craft?

Davion: “I’m just an ultra competitor. I really want to win and I would do whatever it takes to win.”

  • Q: Can you tell me a little about what you’ve seen early on from the Giannis-Bam duo and how they can play off each other on both ends?

Davion: “I think what I’ve learned is most is that they’re both different obviously but I think they can both dominate the game in their own way… Playing together is such a mismatch nightmare that people don’t understand. There’s not a lot of fives in the league that can guard Bam on a close out and there’s definitely no five in the league that can guard Giannis on the close out… I think them playing together is going to create so many mismatches. That’s what makes them so great.”

I’m glad to see Davion asserting himself and becoming more vocal. I see him as the defensive role model for the team. His goal is to be selected NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

He also needs be more assertive on offense. Four more shots per game, one per quarter, should help to bring his scoring average up a few points. Davion is going to do just fine.
