LeBron James praises new-look Heat despite burning them in free agent decision

Of course the Miami Heat left this past offseason as clear winners by completing their Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster trade, but Pat Riley was still looking for more.

Miami’s front office successfully filled the pieces around Antetokounmpo with great rotation fits, including the additions of Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Bobby Portis and Nick Richards. However, Riley’s grand plan was to follow up the Antetokounmpo deal with a free agent reunion with LeBron James.

James— who’s market value only fetched the veteran minimum salary at the age of 41– was a game-changing target for any team looking to add a still All-Star caliber player at a substantial discount. Miami was firmly in the mix all summer long and was even believed to be the favorites at one point, until the Hall of Fame forward ultimately decided to join a stacked Philadelphia 76ers squad in a true ring chasing move.

Now, with the anticipated 2026-27 campaign just a week away, James discussed a bit on the Heat’s revamped roster on his Mind the Game podcast recently:

“It’s gonna be damn good— I think defensively they’re (Miami) gonna be damn good. You look at Wiggins, Bam, Giannis, Davion Mitchell… You have Spo there, he knows how to put the pieces in position, in the right place… Bobby Portis is one of my favorite players. I love Bobby Portis. It’s a very exciting team. We’ll just see how it comes together, which I think it will.”

LeBron was the Miami Heat’s missing piece

It’s painful to hear that James did indeed feel strongly about the Heat’s chances to compete, considering he decided against joining them when he had a prime opportunity to do so.

He could’ve been that missing piece this Miami team, who have pretty much everything except one more core playmaker and closer. His role would have given James much more on-ball usage and full keys to the offense, compared to taking the third or fourth fiddle behind Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown star-studded group.

Not to mention, a James final chapter in the place that he became a champion was set up perfectly for that full circle storybook ending. The keys were under the matt.

Instead, Antetokounmpo and the Heat will have to go through James’ Sixers squad to make a run in a loaded Eastern Conference this upcoming season.
