Report: DeMar DeRozan has Heat on shortlist of preferred trade destinations

The Chicago Bulls have begun the 2023-24 season a dismal 6-14 and are on the precipice of a serious change ahead of the trade deadline.

One of those players could be star wing DeMar DeRozan, who’s in the final year of a three-year, $81.9 million deal he signed ahead of the 2021-22 season. According to NBA insider Sam Amick of The Athletic, one of DeRozan’s “preferred” destinations could be the reigning East champs Heat.

“When it comes to possible destinations, the Heat and Knicks are known to be preferable to DeRozan if he winds up getting moved,” the report read.

The report suggests that LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, DeRozan’s favorite growing up, could be involved in his services if he were to be moved.

It was reported in early November that Zach LaVine and the Chicago Bulls could be going their separate ways via trade sooner rather than later, but ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday that there is currently no market for LaVine roughly two months ahead of the Feb. 8 deadline.

If the Bulls were to blow it up, there could be a number of players the Heat could target outside of DeRozan or LaVine, such as Alex Caruso, Patrick Williams, Coby White, Jevon Carter and even Nikola Vucevic, who signed a three-year, $60 million deal with the Bulls this offseason.

DeRozan, 34, is making $28.6 million this season, meaning the Heat–a tax-paying team–would have to get to 90 percent (or $25.74M) plus 100K of that threshold to salary match.

He is averaging 21.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game this season, sporting a 54.4 true-shooting percentage with a 47.7 effective field-goal percentage, both marks below average for his career.

Do you think the Heat should target DeMar DeRozan? Let us know in the comments!

heat for life

if the heat got derozan and vuc aint nobody beating us pat i hope your swinging for the fences just dont give em jjj anybody else not named jim bam is ok,current roster good not champ team.add derozan vuc be the favorites.give up ty jovic dunc turtle caleb hh 3 or 4 of those should get demar and vuc worry about the future in the future.jimmys got a couple good years in him get him a ring pat.matter of fact u just get us demar favs to win east and maybe beat the fat cheap shot artist in the finals

Reality czech

No. Gutting the team because you don’t like certain players makes no sports or business sense. Derozen and Caruso for Martin, Jovic and a pick keeps our core intact. Substitute Highsmith if you like. If you can get Vuc for someone not named Herro, maybe.

SunManFromDogBone

Did you mean Lowry $29.7M, Martin, Jovic and a pick? DeRozan and Caruso total $38M. Martin and Jovic alone total less than $10M.

Reality czech

Yes, I meant that, in agreement with your previous post.

vagibugi

no to Vucevic and yes to Derozan.. but I wouldnt give up Lowry or Robinson for him.

Alien

All this talk about trades for a pg make no sense to me, as the Heat has proved that over and over this season with Lowry and back up JR. None of the players mentioned so far in trade scenarios will help against a mismatch from Jokic or Porzingis or Brook Lopez. Denver punished Heat with a Jokic mismatch last NBA final. This was a playbook from 2021 when the Bucks ( Brook Lopez versus Bam Adebayo) swept the Heat in the first round of East Finals. Granted that the Heat beat the Bucks in 2023 but remember that it was without Giannis. This season Celtics wasted no time to trade for Porzingis, learning from the lessons of the Nuggets and Bucks against the Heat. My hope is that should the Heat meet the Bucks or Celtics in a 2024 play off run, HH or Orlando Robinson will be enough to cause some inconvenience for either Brook Lopez (Bucks) or Porzingis (Celtics).

Alien

….Forgot to mention 2020 NBA finals with Lakers despite having LeBron used Davis immensely in the paint to beat the Heat. History has a way of teaching us lessons to learn only if we look closely.

SunManFromDogBone

Lowry is one minor injury away from retiring. He is no longer a reliable 30+ minute PG. Back-up yes. Mentor yes. Everyday starter NO! If Miami can get a better PG from a tanking team I’m all for it. JRich can play back-up and maybe Hampton will come along over the next few months.

SunManFromDogBone

Fansided had a possible trade that makes sense to me. Unfortunately, I think Cronin would also want Jaquez, Jovic and Spo’s first born.

Miami receives: Malcolm Brogdon

Portland receives: Kyle Lowry, 2027 First-Round Pick, Second-Round Pick

Even after a disappointing and demoralizing summer in which they whiffed on both Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal, the Miami Heat once again find themselves “in the mix” in the Eastern Conference. With the way they’ve played this season, it wouldn’t be surprising if they finished in the top 3 of the East standings. However, in order to get there and possibly compete for a championship this season, they’ll likely have to make a big move at the NBA Trade Deadline.
One player that makes a ton of sense for the Heat is Malcolm Brogdon. They need to solidify their backcourt with the injury of Dru Smith and the fact that Kyle Lowry is eventually going to run into fatigue and/or injury issues at his age. It would be smart for the Heat to already begin to prepare for that.
Even though Brogdon has his own issues on that front, he’s arguably the ideal target for a veteran team that’s looking for veteran help. Brogdon is a two-way player who fits the Heat’s philosophy and a player you can plug and play right away.

Have to laugh at media bias. “Even after a disappointing and demoralizing summer”.

The Heat were neither demoralized nor disappointed. We did fine not trading for Lillard based on what it would have cost us (basically everything). And we CHOSE not to go after Beale.

SunManFromDogBone

Agreed. Riley was too smart to fall for that one.

SunManFromDogBone

Lowry, Caleb, Bryant and pick for DeRozan and Caruso works for me.
Start Caruso, Herro, Derozan, Butler and Bam
Second Unit*: Richardson, Robinson, Jaquez, Highsmith and Love/ORob
*Jovic can be inserted in rotation if he is “seasoned enough” by the playoffs.

Reality czech

I would be 100% all in on this trade! AND, because it would be a 3 for 2, they could slide Cain into a regular contract and add a new 2 way (Champagnie or a poach).

heat for life

if we got demar id be one happy heat life fan.i think all my heat bros would be happy to.forget hes similar to jimmy hes so dam good .talent wins out in the end.go heat

Bout30man

Talent does win out. And I don’t mind having two Jimmy types. There could always be one out on the floor. Think of the shots DeRozan made in our loss to the Bulls. The dagger shot was defended almost perfectly. And I believe he would fit in seamlessly. Of course, this is all wishful thinking as we never seem to get the guys who want to come here.

SunManFromDogBone

DeRozen would give the Heat three Jimmy types. You forgot Jaquez (Jimmy Lite).

Reality czech

First, it has become the kiss of death lately when a player states he’d prefer the Heat.
Second, if a requirement is that we have to send out 90% of his salary to fit in the cap, I don’t see how we can do that without giving up players that are playing well right now. That would be Lowry or Duncan and I don’t see them giving up either one. Martin, Jovic, Highsmith together add up to about $11 million.

Bout30man

Talk is cheap. After what we went thru, it’s smart to not get your hopes up anymore. But, would he help enough? I think so. He could make a huge difference. But it doesn’t matter because it’s not like he’s coming here

heat for life

think positive 30 my inside source(the internet) says its between us nyk and lak.

SunManFromDogBone

I’m very impressed by your change of attitude ever since you took that “Power of Positive Thinking” course. Keep up the positive thinking!
GO HEAT!!!

heat for life

criticism comes with the territory when u dont play coach or trade good sorry sun man of course i want the heat to win,but when they f up gotta give my 2 cents, theres alot to be happy about especially after watching jjj play

SunManFromDogBone

Yup. They are still a player or two away from being real contenders. It will be very interesting to see which players are available before the trade deadline.

ZechMerquise

derozan and jimmy are basically the same. we dont need another wing, we have holes to fill at the pf and pg spot

ManilaHeat

This is how you make people in a close group hate you…
JJJ for DeRozan straight up trade 😁

Big_guy305

Juan wick will come for you in the night lol

Reality czech

Shame on you!

heat for life

day 1 of nba season hell yes today f no

SunManFromDogBone

With a creative imagination like that, Portland can use you in their front office.

You know, bombing Manila with something is not that bad idea after all to get rid of certain Heat fan suggesting…

Alien

We don’t need this distraction anymore, pleaeseeeeeeee! Don’t tell us. They all say that, then end up elsewhere…notably Dame and Beasley were rumored to list Heat as preferable landing ground.
I understand that listing IS NOT THE SAME THING as coming to, so when I see this headlines, I don’t bother reading the rest of the article. These headlines are teasers in my opinion.

Big_guy305

Yes, but the difference is he on a expiring contract, plus we can offer better compensation. He would fit better on this team because we can actually hide him on defense. Also I seen one trade package on there blog that might do if they consider it: Fournier, grimes, and picks. We can do better then that, while not giving much up. Furthermore I think they want caruso more, and lakers will probably go for lavine, since they need a 3rd option.

Big_guy305

He can be our 6th man, I would trade Martin, jovic, and a 1st round pick at most for him.

heat for life

he;d be the 4th best player on team jim bam jjj deroz

Big_guy305

Also he can be another closer for us.

heat for life

could u imagine .derozan jim jjj bam on floor at same time no team could match that talent level

Big_guy305

That does sound enticing.

heat for life

id like to pry vucevic also so he can guard the big fat cheap shot artist in denver.bam has no shot vs joker the size difference is laughable.how bout anybody but jim bam jjj for demar and vuc.its fun to dream of these trades that will never happen big guy

Reality czech

No thanks. I strongly prefer the SunMan proposal.

Big_guy305

Or instead of the 1st, we give them 2 future 2nds, Martin, jovic, and Thomas. We probably won’t have to give them much because I don’t think the knicks would want him. They already have too many 1 way players , plus he’s 34, and the rental would be for almost half the year.

MaxPain

I’m not giving up Jovic.
I think his floor is an elite role player and his ceiling is a better passing Lauri Markkenan.

oregoner

I wouldn’t want to trade martin. The bulls stink, they don’t need martin. Maybe Highsmith and Jovic and a draft pick?

Big_guy305

I would honestly do Highsmith instead, but idk if they would accept that offer because Highsmith isn’t known as much as a Martin, plus he hasn’t been playing good lately on the offensive side of the ball. So maybe hh,jovic, Thomas, and a 1st or 2nd round pick 🤔

SunManFromDogBone

The dollars don’t come close to matching. Would need to give them Lowry’s expiring or Duncan, Caleb, filler (Bryant?) and a pick, for expiring contract. That is too much.
