Report: Heat are exploring Kyle Lowry trades

We are nearing the two-week mark ahead of the Feb. 8 NBA Trade Deadline, and Miami Heat veteran point guard Kyle Lowry could be on the move.

According to Anthony Chaing and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Heat is continuing to explore trade options for trading Lowry, who it recently benched after 41 games, ahead of the deadline.

“Veteran point guard Kyle Lowry fell out of the Miami Heat’s starting lineup in recent days, and more change could be coming for Lowry and the Heat,” Chiang wrote Monday. “The Heat continues to explore trades involving Lowry ahead of the Feb. 8 NBA trade deadline, according to multiple league sources.”

Jackson confirmed Chaing’s reports Monday in a tweet, citing that the organization was “more open” to trading him than before.

Lowry owns an expiring cap hit worth $29.7 million, an important piece that could be used to salary any trade for a player with a bigger contract–including Hawks guard Dejounte Murray and Hornets guard Terry Rozier, both of whom have been previously linked to Miami in trade talks.

Lowry, 37, has started in his 35 games before recently getting moved to the bench for Caleb Martin. He’s currently averaging 8.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists on 42.6 percent shooting, including 38.5 percent from 3-point range and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line this season.

Though he’s missed his last 18 3-point attempts, which has dipped his efficiency. The guard’s reluctancy to shoot–and inability to convert when he does–has hindered a Heat offense that ranks No. 20 in the NBA this season, including No. 28 over their last 10 games. It’s not the only problem, but it’s a problem that needs to be addressed.

Lowry hasn’t converted on more than three field goals since the turn of the calendar, making more than one on just once since Jan. 8. Lowry is still capable of initiating offense, but Martin, Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, Nikola Jovic and Jimmy Butler, among others, initiate as much, if not more than Lowry does depending on who he’s playing with on the floor.

He has appeared in 155 regular season games with the Heat, including 142 starts. He’s averaged 11.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game on 42.5/36.7/85.2 shooting splits. He’s also experiencing the lowest usage rate of his career at 13.3 percent, over three percentage points lower than it was last year (16.7% USG%) and nearly five lower than it was in his first year with Miami (18.2%).

“I’m going with this right now,” Spoelstra said Sunday, according to Chaing. “I think this is an interesting direction and I’ll do whatever we feel like we have to do in this second half of the season.

“That’s not an indictment on one player. Kyle has been great as a starter and really impactful last year off the bench. So this really isn’t about him. This is about us trying to get to a higher level on both ends of the court, but also offensively. Combinations do matter, rotations do matter, lineups that bring out the best in each other do matter. And I’m still in the process of trying to help the team figure that out.”

Should the Miami Heat be exploring Kyle Lowry trades? And for what? Let us know in the comments below!

SunManFromDogBone

Just brainstorming…how about Bogdonovich and Murray for Herro, Martin and pick?

Reality Czech

I’m in. How do the numbers work?

SunManFromDogBone

They work.

Alien

Which Murray?

Does Herro for Kuzma (21,8ppg, 6.4 rpg, 4.3 apg) sound reasonable if Heat can’t get Miles Bridges? Both have 4 year contracts.

Kyle Kuzma signed a 4 year / $90,000,000 contract with the Washington Wizards, including $90,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $22,500,000. In 2023-24, Kuzma will earn a base salary of $25,568,182, while carrying a cap hit of $25,568,182 and a dead cap value of $25,568,182.Tyler Herro signed a 4 year / $120,000,000 contract with the Miami Heat, including $120,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $30,000,000. In 2023-24, Herro will earn a base salary of $27,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $27,000,000 and a dead cap value of $27,000,000.

Miles Bridges is nota Heat material. Kuzma would be a good fit. But I don’t think Pat&Spo want to trade Tyler (and I am not sure I would want to). But I admit it would probably make the team stronger.

Big_guy305

Also not to mention wiz already have Poole, so why would they want another volume shooter? Deni would be a decent option too if we don’t get kuzma.

vagibugi

And we dint gave up Jovic. Great.

vagibugi

and Rozier it is.

vagibugi

Looks like the trade is coming. Rosier, Murray, Brogdon are players, which Heat could use and should be available.

Sundayafternoons

So… Does he start?

Big_guy305

Ofcourse he starts he’s averaging a career high in points and assists.

2qbn

And he will start tomorrow! Put the scary back in Terry, baby!

SunManFromDogBone

If not Memphis tomorrow, Boston on Thursday, Knicks on Saturday.

2qbn

OMG vs Boston. Ha! That should be juicy

Big_guy305

All of a sudden miami offense will look scary good !

SunManFromDogBone

What do you think?
23.2 ppg
3.9 rpg
6.6 apg
1.1 spg
45.9 fg%
35.9 3pt%
84.5 ft%

Sundayafternoons

I don’t watch Charlotte ever, so I don’t know what his strengths are nor what role Charlotte has him play.

It’s not a question about what he averages. For example ratio of off the dribble threes implies more about his play style than his fg percentage in the paint, and might indicate more how his strengths play and in what role in Miami.

SunManFromDogBone

AWESOME!!! Now if we can just get Bridges for Caleb and a pick.
https://www.si.com/nba/hornets/news/charlotte-hornets-trade-terry-rozier-to-miami-heats

2qbn

You the man, SunMan! You have been talking this trade for months. Let’s goooooooooo

SunManFromDogBone

Thangya vera mush. Bridges is on expiring contract and has “issues” that only Miami’s culture can help resolve. If he is willing to take a reasonable contract over 3-4 years we are set.
Rozier, Herro, Butler, Bridges, Bam
Richardson, Robinson, Jaquez, Highsmith, Love
Smith, Jovic, Bryant, ORob,
(Cain, Hampton, Swider)

Big_guy305

You were right all along, bridges would be a good pick up too, or even Pj. The hornets fans already hate the trade we made with them lol

SunManFromDogBone

PJ underperforming on his $16.8m/3 year contract. If Bridges isn’t available, there may other teams willing to deal. We are already ahead of the game. We now have a good playmaking/scoring PG who is happy to be here!!!

Big_guy305

Getting one of those 2 would definitely help us out a lot, but quick question would Getting one of them or another pf or center affect us with the 2nd apron tax?

SunManFromDogBone

Next year is a whole other matter. These are “win now” moves. Many things can change by this summer, depending on how this season goes. By then, everything/everyone may be on the table except Bam and Jaquez.

heat for life

i think terry is not a pure pg more of a 2g ball was the point,

SunManFromDogBone

6.6 assists per game not bad for a SG. Actually, he is a combo guard who can play either position. Good driving into paint and dishing out assists. 36.7% careder 3 pt shooter. He loves to run too.

Sharkey

Although Bridges is definitely a very good player and he would be a very good addition to the current roster I do not want him on our team because of what he has done first of all. And also I think he is not mentally fit and in the end would hurt this team.

SunManFromDogBone

You’re probably right. Just a thought.

Big_guy305

We got scary Terry, and didn’t even have to give up much, thank you pat Riley 🙏…. I don’t think we’re done either .

Huge! We have to thank SunMan. He manifested this months ago 🙂

Big_guy305

Yes his dreams definitely manifested in a big way!

SunManFromDogBone

Yup. That’s me. The California Dreamer. Gonna have to do some more meditation (cough cough) to get us over the top with a PF trade.

SunManFromDogBone

Thanks. Must have been all that weed (I mean meditation) I’ve been doing. Gets the creative juices flowing.

Big_guy305

Lmaoooo

2qbn

We back, baby! It happened

Max Pain

Looks like Pat is looking to make some moves with Lowry as trade bait.

I’m still on the Jovic bandwagon though. I just like the Kid’s potential.

The thing is that ever since Spo put him in the starting lineup 12 games ago, the starting lineup’s defense has been stifling.

That lineup has had the 2nd best defensive rating in the nba the last 12 games.

Nico’s length and movement has kicked the defense up a notch.

The problem is that we can’t score on the other end because of the poor shooting by Nico, Lowry and Caleb.
Bam and Jimmy need dudes that can space the floor for them.

What’s fking funny is that we thought Nico biggest problem was going to be his defense not his offense.

Turns out his defense has been the sht, it’s his offense that needs more seasoning.

We’re going to make some moves before the deadline but I’d still be hesitant to trade Nico if I’m Pat because we know our center Bam is an all nba defender, we know our young sf JJJ can defend and now we know Nico can defend at pf too.

The thing we gotta ask ourselves is how bad-ass is that frontcourt going to be when those 3 players start meshing offensively?

Reality Czech

It may be from a site I’m not familiar with, but they confirm what I’ve said ad nauseam – you definitely don’t need to give up Herro to get Rozier.
”What A Trade Could Look LikeAny trade for Rozier would almost certainly involve Lowry heading to Charlotte. But that alone probably won’t get a deal done. The Heat could have to add in a second-round pick. At most though, adding in a future protected first-round pick and/or one of their role players, such as Caleb Martin or Josh Richardson, to go along with Lowry’s expiring contract would certainly be enough to seal the deal. A smaller trade package would also keep the door open for the Heat for another, perhaps bigger trade in the future before the trade deadline in early February.”

Bout30man

If that is true, it’s almost GM malpractice if that deal doesn’t get done. And, another one. This is so obviously Jimmy’s last hurrah. If we do nothing, I don’t want to hear anymore how Pat is the Godfather. It’s getting harder to have patience with him. Need I remind everyone that the disaster of acquiring Lowry is on him. He is not infallible, far from it. More like, he was the Godfather.

SunManFromDogBone

Herro and Jovic for Rozier and Bridges
Lowry, Martin and pick for DeRozan and Williams

Reality Czech

Kind of a dream scenario. Would be nice.

2qbn

It sounds like Brogdon will end up being traded. Not that I think those two front offices are calling each other any time soon

Bout30man

Too bad as we could use him and they could get some draft choices out of us. That GM did a terrible job as Portland must be going thru a dreary season.

heat for life

dont like one way players to much

Kyle Lowry Unfollows Multitude Of Players On Miami Heat’s RosterVeteran guard Kyle Lowry recently unfollowed Miami Heat players including Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Duncan Robinson, Haywood Highsmith, Nikola Jovic, and Orlando Robinson. https://www.si.com/nba/heat/miami-news/kyle-lowry-unfollows-multitude-of-players-on-miami-heats-roster

Reality Czech

Yeah, read that, hmmm

Bout30man

Good, unfollow. Just please, find another place for him. I feel sorry for the other team.

ManilaHeat

Maybe its a done deal already. Welcome to Miami _______________ !
Feel free to fill in the blank lol

heat for life

manila heat

ZechMerquise

we should join the Lakers-Hawks about dejountay murray-dlo russel trade. It seems Hawks isnt interested with dlo, and theyre looking for a 3rd team and they want an expiring contract. So lets give them kyle plus some 2nd pick for dlo. dlo can shoot, still young, and can thrive here in miami

Reality Czech

That’s a very interesting suggestion, Zech!

ManilaHeat

Watching DLo in LA and in his previous teams he seems to want (emphasis on want) to be the No. 1 option and doesn’t go back on D after a botched offense. Just saying but its up to FO to do something. Its a waiting game

heat for life

thibs interested in turtle maybe an evan fournier coming here with another sht player

Bout30man

Fournier never even gets off the bench. A worthless player, hope we don’t bite on that deal.

2qbn

We won’t bite since he pulled it out of his @$$

heat for life

read it on some site

ManilaHeat

Is there any team that would take his salary and age? Im for trading the guy lets hope Riles and Elisburg can do their thing. For Heat’s sake. And us fans hehe

Reality Czech

If you have a vet on a rebuilding team that has 2-3 years on his contract and doesn’t fit with the direction they’re going, trading for a guy like Lowry is a big help for cap relief. They pay him his remaining $14 million and clear that salary off the books at season’s end. In this situation, it isn’t about the value of the player, but, rather, the value of the contract.

ManilaHeat

Good to know lets see some teams bite it. C’mon Pat, Andy make this work

2qbn

Exactly. we see this type of trade every year. Picks will definitely have to be included and probably Jovic.

Bout30man

In case anyone thinks JJJ being back would fix everything that is wrong with this team I ask you to check the box scores tonite. Cleveland is destroying the Magic currently. Jaime would help, but this team needs way more than just him.

Reality Czech

Some interpret this as indicating Jaquez won’t help to deliver more wins. Of course he will. We already know that. But this team needs more.
A change is coming, hopefully this week.
🎵 Anticipation 🎵🎵

Big_guy305

Trading Lowry was always gonna happen, he wasn’t worth his contract. He’s more washed then love. Barely wants to shoot, hasn’t made a 3 in awhile. Can’t penetrate the paint like he used to. The only thing left he can do well is pass, and even that skill ain’t same. We need to make some moves, so trade him for rozier or whoever can give us a better impact. Good riddance .

Bout30man

He is the most obvious first step to righting this team. I just am concerned about who wants him. Everyone assures me that his contract has value. Well, I hope it does because otherwise, he has very little value as a player and won’t attract much back without other additional concussions. It more seems like we would have to pay to offload him on someone else. It’s unusual to me, this idea that you can grossly overpay a player and then, because his contract is so expensive, it has value.

Bout30man

Concessions.

Big_guy305

I think some teams will value him for leadership, and championship experience at the pg position. Also his contract is expiring, so it’s good for team that’s trying to compete for next season because THEY’LL need that 29.7 mill to get a really good to great player. I don’t mind attaching a draft pick or 2 to him, if it nets us a better more impactful player. Also Riley is the godfather for a reason, he’s the type of gm that is ready to get rid of draft picks for an A player.
