If Butler leaves after the season, the Heat would NOT have his salary of $50+ million in cap space. Excerpts from a Barry Jackson article.

”With its current roster, the Heat would have no more than $13 million in cap space to replace Butler if he leaves in free agency next July. Realistically, Miami likely would have a bit less than that.
Here’s how the math works:
Miami would have 10 players under contract for 2025-26 if it doesn’t trade one of the 10 in the months ahead.
That adds up to $139.1 million. Cap holds – required by the NBA to fill open roster spots up to 12 – would add another $2.4 million to Miami’s cap, leaving the Heat at $141.5 million in commitments.
The 2025-26 cap is projected to be $154.6 million, per ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
So that’s just $13 million in cap space — not nearly enough to add an All Star — if Butler simply signs elsewhere.”

Sometimes it’s what’s not written that is as important as what is. In re-reading the Jackson info, it may be accurate that the cap may be $154+ million. However, if the current payroll is $189+ million, it would seem to me that they could exceed the cap like they have done so now, while still avoiding the second apron.

IF…that’s a big IF…Jimmy has a very good year and IF…he gives Miami a home town discount for an extension…I think maybe Miami should consider keeping him. Otherwise, sign and trade him or let him walk. Hopefully, by that time either Jaquez or Jovic will be able to step into the starting SF position and other players can be obtained in trade or via free agency.

Worse case scenario, a year from now, I could live with a starting rotation of Rozier, Herro, Jaquez or Jovic, Bam and Ware.

Interesting article. Maybe a win/win situation for 2024-2025 and beyond…

he Heat has withdrawn qualifying offers for Cole Swider and Alondes Williams. Both ended last season on 2 way contracts with Heat. Miami has its 3 2-way contracts filled with Keshad Johnson, Zyon Pullin and Dru Smith, though teams can replace 2-way players at any time.

SunManFromDogBone

Currently on two-way contracts
Dru Smith: The 26-year-old guard who went undrafted out of Missouri in 2021 currently is still recovering from the season-ending knee injury sustained with the Heat last November when he mis-stepped off a dangerous ledge on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ court.
Previously signed five times by the Heat, Smith is viewed as insurance at point guard, as a low-maintenance, high-character option.

Zyon Pullin: Undrafted out of Florida last month, Pullin is best known for his playmaking and quality assist-to-turnover ratio, solid if not spectacular at point guard.
With the Heat without a true point guard among the 14 currently under standard contract, the opportunity could be there, particularly if Smith is not ready for the start of the season.

Keshad Johnson: Undrafted out of Arizona, Johnson is somewhat the prototype of the Heat’s developmental projects, a gritty defender with a solid physique at 6-foot-6, 225, with upside on the offensive end. With Caleb Martin having departed for the Philadelphia 76ers, the door briefly appeared wide open for Johnson until Haywood Highsmith’s return in free agency.

Still, of those currently under two-way contracts for the Heat, Johnson would seem to have the inside track to the opening-night roster.

Cole Swider: Having signed a qualifying offer for a two-way contract, Swider is allowed at any time until the middle of the month to opt into such a deal. In such an instance, the Heat then hold the option of swapping the outside-shooting forward into one of the three two-way slots currently filled. More likely could be Swider taking his skills elsewhere in search of something more substantial, having last summer moved from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Heat.

Alondes Williams: Williams is in the same position as Swider, allowed to accept a Heat two-way deal at any point until the middle of the month. The Heat then have the same options as with Swider. The difference is Williams, with his streak-scoring outbursts in the G League, has yet to show as much of a singular bona fide NBA skill as Swider’s 3-point stroke.

Lakers sure screwed up taking Bronny instead of Keshad. I sure hope he gets a contract of some kind.

heat for life

They had to take him or else lebron bolts. This alondes williams has some slick moves.Just needs to learn how to harness his skills to be terrys backup. Can u imagine dunc with that athleticism.Ah that felt good rc

SunManFromDogBone

I think Williams is good against inferior competition. Hasn’t proven he is “big league material” yet.

heat for life

SunManFromDogBone

I think Heat have enough depth to trade 2-3 guys for one player and/or picks and open up slots for G Leaguers and two-way guys.

at his peak jimmy was a smaller lbj.almost as talented.but jimmys not as dedicated as lbj.so his greatness was maybe 5 years compared to lebrons 20

SunManFromDogBone

Butler was never close to James. Butler fading at 35ish. James still great at 40 ish.

  • Butler 6x all star, 5x all nba, 5x all defense.
  • James 20x all star, 20x all nba, 6x all defense, 2x runner up DPOY

Alondes is so physically talented, but can be erratic. Some of his 3s are way off, and his passes can be an adventure.
