Report: Jimmy Butler unwilling to sign extension with Warriors, signaling negotiations have ‘ended for now’

Oh look, Miami Heat trade news …. wait, it’s not the good kind!

Moments after the San Antonio Spurs traded for All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox, ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst reported Sunday evening that talks between the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors for Jimmy Butler have “ended for now” after Butler communicated with the Warriors that he’s not willing to sign an extension with the team.

It was reported last week by Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor that the Warriors were back in the mix after Windhorst reported that the price has lowered for Butler. According, the interest wasn’t mutual which nixed any (potential) deal between the two parties. The Warriors have been linked to Butler since the summer, though their pursuit was shot down by Anthony Slater, Sam Amick and Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic in early January.

Now, we’re back to square one: Phoenix or bust.

Once again, saying anywhere but Miami and then shooing away multiple destinations in the process in bad faith is definitely a decision! Bradley Beal knows he holds all the cards when it comes to trade negotiations, and we know that the Heat aren’t willing to take back Beal in any scenario because they would be locking themselves into Beal, Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro for the next 2.5 seasons.

The 2024-25 NBA Trade Deadline is Feb. 6 at 3:00 p.m. EST. There’s still time, but there also isn’t if Butler continues to dismantle negotiations.

After second thought, Riley should play hardball until the trade deadline. Let Butler blink and accept a trade to a team other than Phoenix. If he refuses, he can be humiliated the rest of the season sitting at the end of the bench or sitting at home moping while he is on progressively increasing suspensions. The inmates may be running the asylums in other cities, but in Miami, Pat Riley is the warden…period!

2025 NBA Trade Deadline Predictions…(Bleacher Report)
February 3, 2025

“Butler has been attached to the Phoenix Suns for weeks, but that deal simply isn’t getting done without Bradley Beal somehow involved.

And, well, there’s just no reason for Miami to take Beal’s contract back. In fact, it’s hard to imagine any team in the league justifying the acquisition of Beal.

Beal is still a solid offensive player. He’s averaging 17.0 points, 3.4 assists and 2.1 threes while shooting 40.0 percent from three. But he’s a liability on defense, has the fifth-highest salary in 2024-25, has a $57.1 million player option in 2026-27 and has a no-trade clause.

In other words, Beal is on what is almost certainly the worst contract in the NBA right now. And the Suns don’t have enough draft assets to incentivize anyone to take that on.

He’ll still be a Sun on Friday.”

The trade rumors are hilarious right now. Warriors trying to get Bron and Durant lol yeah right. Warriors trying to get anybody. Hornets going to go after Ingram. No wait Warriors going to get LaMelo Ball. It’s all over the place.

The one thing I still believe is true is what Shams said and that is the Sunds are still trying a 3 to 5 team trade to get Jimmy. It could be why Jimmy was shutting down the Warriors talk. But the Beal no trade clause is like an immovable object right now.

I still think the Grizzlies should just say eff it like the Raptors did with Kawhi. He would make them a serious contender.

SunManFromDogBone

T minus 72 hours and counting. Tick…Tick…Tick…

If somebody is going to blink. I sure hope it isn’t Riley. If he does I expect nothing less the three first round picks, a second round pick, Ryan Dunn and Beal for Butler and a fill-in player. I still think Milwaukee may be the dark horse followed closely by Memphis.

thebithmonger

trade him to the mavericks. they are accepting expensive old dudes right now

2qbn

The Spurs could be in play. They still have assets and picks. Jimmy ends up in Texas. Obviously, we don’t know if they’re really trying to go all in for this season and next, but if they did, Jimmy fits perfectly with Wemby and Fox.

Big_guy305

Honestly tired of Jimmy, other teams making trades but us, pat Riley just trade this fool already to anyone but the Phoenix. Jimmy is making all this money but is egotistical as hell and a big liar. This guy is a nuisance, Says he will play for anyone but the heat. But tells teams not to trade for him, and now is halting trades is ridiculous. Send this emo Jimmy away packing and idc if it’s Timbuktu.

2qbn

But we don’t know what real offers are on the table, if any. If this continues Adam Silver is going to have to step in. He has a single player wreaking havoc on the collective bargaining agreement.

I still think in the end one of the Grizzlies or Bucks will say who cares if he threatens to not sign with them since they are trying to make a run this year. If he does that then he’s off their books too lol

Big_guy305

I feel like the offers are going down because Jimmy is single handily disrupting us every chance he gets. Also idk If silver will ever step in ,he seems more busy with trying make each quarter of basketball 10 minutes, then to handle 1 player messing with the cba. I hope your right about grizz or bucks not caring, but we will see soon.

Alaska Emily

As far as I can tell, he mentioned a 10-minute quarter once on a podcast off-hand, and he specifically said that it’s not likely to happen. Here, I’ll pull the quote:

“I am a fan of four 10-minute quarters. I’m not sure that many others are. It’s such a dramatic change to the game. I think something like that would have to be talked more about over time.”

That’s it. Then NBA Twitter exploded. Silver’s allowed to have his preferences and opinions, and he’s allowed to talk about them on podcasts. But in today’s clickbait media landscape, apparently every basketball journalist is also allowed to completely lose their minds and twist Silver’s words if it means they can make us just miserable enough to click on their article.

Bout30man

I can’t believe Butler has this power to insist on where he goes, and only to one team. I guess he instituted his own no trade clause, one that he never negotiated for in his contract. But, the strangest thing is that the Heat are giving into this recalcitrant player’s demands, against the better interest of getting the best deal for the Miami Heat. And, the complexities of this pathway to a trade with the Suns, with as many as five other teams involved, all btw, expecting to get paid in some way for helping, has made the possibility of even this trade somewhat precarious and liable to fall thru. And then we are stuck with a player who doesn’t want to be here. The situation makes little sense.

Big_guy305

Now it’s even crazier now, since now apparently suns are fielding trade calls for Kevin Durant.

Bout30man

I am going to cross the line a little here. Kevin Huerter is such a good player and yet he got relegated down in the rotation and now gets cast aside in trade. Zach Collin’s showed so much potential but he got relegated down in the rotation, almost never plays for the Spurs, and now he gets cast aside in a trade. What happens now for these two as they are likely on their way out of the league. You see this happen all the time if you watch who gets included in trades. There is reverse racism in basketball. Watch as I predict Grayson Allen will get included in any Phoenix trade. I criticize Pat for what I call his social experiment, but it is interesting that the Heat are staying around .500 even without Jimmy. Just saying cause no one else will…

Bout30man

Huerter used to light us up with the Hawks. He is a seventh man player level ability, who could even be a decent spot starter, getting treated like an eleven, twelth man in a rotation. Zach Collin’s had that rookie year where he got to start some and did pretty well. Then they benched him, never played him, and you don’t even know what you have as he never got a chance to grow in the second or third year like most players do. And that was on a team where Jeremy Sochan was your second best player. Imagine if Jovic got treated like that. He could have after his rookie year. I may sound inconsistent but maybe this is Pat’s thinking, giving all players adequate time to bloom. And treating all alike. Jovic is going to make it but it sure didn’t look like it. Zach Collin’s, with this trade, may be on the slow walk out of this league, and we don’t even know what he could become. And there is no team in this league that has a better nine thru twelve player than the guy they call “Opie”, Kevin Huerter.

I m not sure if I understand what are you saying.
But ok, what are you saying about Luka/AD trade?

Bout30man

Great question, and thanks for taking my comments seriously. I think you know how Dallas feels as they played yesterday like they were in shock. Some think Luca’s lack of defense (which is a stereotype and is exaggerated) makes this a better trade for Dallas. I say they are wrong. LA is going to be a very good team now but I don’t think it’s enough to put them over the top. Besides, they have an excellent player in Reeves and another high skill one in the pipeline in Knecht. They are in some ways paralleling Luca’s albeit much more advanced skillset. They will miss AD’s high end inside and outside #4,#5 scoring. So, Luka, if he can be even compared to AD, is the better player, a solid A+ compared to a solid A, but both teams may be a little weakened because of the other personnel on each team, like Lively and Gafford on Dallas also create some redundancy (for Dallas more of a future problem as Lively is hurt now). In short, Dallas will miss Luka and LA will miss AD.

heat for life

the only differnce i see is the age.do u remember the bubble

Bout30man

And, what I am saying is this- I like diversity.. In hockey, I always want the few blacks on my team. The Panthers had one, DuClair, and he was so great, so speedy. Now they have Sourdiff in the minors, and he has an excellent chance of being on the Panthers next year. In basketball, I think every team should have diversity as much as possible, unless it weakens the team. There are some all black teams that are no better or worse than any other team but I think it reflects a lack of a meritocracy to not have some diversity at least deep in the rotation. It certainly does not weaken the team. But, there is also a time when you have six or more white players on a team where it does somewhat weaken the team. But, my point here is it’s not completely a meritocracy. White players are often not given time to improve like Jovic has had, and maybe JJJ will. So, maybe I see what makes Pat choose as he has, and btw he has only done this in the last five years of his storied career, shown a tendency to select white players at a higher percentage than the other teams. Maybe he thinks he can find more diamonds in the rough that way.
Anyway, that is what I am saying.

Well, I believe black/white player thing is more connected with physical qualities of players. Excellent example is Europe, where you have a majority of white players all around the Europe but in France, where because of Africa connection a lot of players are black. The playing style is totally different. France always had fast, athletic team, but not really successful for a long time, till great and skilled players like Tony Parker coming a board. Till then, all white team with highly skilled players, like former Yugoslavia, Spain, Russia were strong teams.

In US, things are different. Athletics abilities are priced over there over skill abilities, and black athletes are favoured there. Add to this that competition in basketball is huge, many black athletes use sport to try to improve their lives in US, so not many white athletes survive in basketball. There is not such pressure here in Europe, at least where I live. Its more like lets try sport and if it pans out, fine, if not, ok, then not.

I perfect example of thas is my nephew. He just signed a professional contract as a goalkeeper with first league soccer team in Poland. Till this signing he played here in Slovenia in first league, he worked and study along.

Bout30man

Appreciate your response on these touchy but sometimes unavoidable observations. In so many ways sports offered an avenue for so many societal improvements and wider acceptance of our diversity, just as television and movies did also. It is America’s greatest strength, probably defining who we are in the world more than any other aspect of the American identity, although it is not lost on me the irony and necessity of some of our current positions. Someday, and we are closing in on it, we will be post racial.
Hope your nephew does well.

I have no problem talking that stuff. We have to be honest to ourselves and to others. In times of political correctness open talk can offense somebody , but so be it.

The boy is doing great. Big city, great soccer fans, 15000 people always full stadium, good contract and salary.

The boy is over the moon right now.

heat for life

huerter and zach collins are both below average players 30, ty luka joker are the jerry cooneys of the nba lol

Bout30man

How I remember it, either Cooney or Duane Bobick got hit in the Adam’s apple. Both suffered brutal KO’s, Larry Holmes was in one of the fights. But, later on Holmes beat Ali so bad (he wouldn’t go down) that he might have contributed to his neurological problems down the road.

Bout30man

You put Huerter in the right situation, he is a valuable rotation player. I believe Collins’ has not had a fair chance.

vagibugi

Jimmy staying is now a real option.

SunManFromDogBone

Yup. If he does, it sure as hell won’t be under his terms. He’s already burned his bridges with the organization, the team and the fans. He is now “Persona non grata” in Miami!

Bout30man

It seems the most likely outcome. It doesn’t seem like he will ever be playing again for us though, does it? What will happen if no trade is made?
Not sure why Golden State wanted him to sign a long term contract anyway. I only see him being useful as a rental. He will only play maybe half the games from now on, and you are paying so much for him it limits other moves. Perhaps Phoenix is willing to do it to get rid of a worse contract and use him as a rental this year. But, I am still not sure I see the logic in it from the Suns standpoint.

If Jimmy is not traded, then we have more of this.. suspension, Butler not playing till the end of the season. Then, Butler will opt in, because of money.

After that, we have an option sign and trade to everybody for anything… or more of suspension for the whole of next season, which will effectively finish Butlers career, but also cost Heat two seasons.

Its hard to believe, but the best thing Heat can do right now is to get rid of him for expiring contracts, even if that means give something, like a pick or a player beside Butler. Cap space will be more valuable than every player in the future.

Karma is a bitch. Jimmy will gets what he deserves.

Bout30man

I see it that way too, except the karma part. Not sure if life is ever as fair as the rules of karma supposedly dictate.

Ode to Pat Riley and Jimmy Butler. May the best gambler win!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hx4gdlfamo

Bonus clip.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Zhz0DDWA3aI

Reality Czech

I don’t care – just get rid of him at this point. Clarke, Smart, Kennard straight up along with a pick. Money works for both teams. Memphis doesn’t give up any young core members. Only Clarke is not an expiring contract and at reasonable $12.5 million. Poor 3p% but solid 60%+ fg%. Any of the trades suggested by all you others are fine with me as long as something gets done.

SunManFromDogBone

I still think someone is going to blink and a deal will get done. I don’t think it will be Riley doing the blinking.

If Butler wants to play again this season, he should STFU and let Riley get a deal done. If not, I don’t want to hear him bitchin later. After all, he is still under contract to play basketball this season, not to sit around moping, bitching and making demands.

The Player’s Association fought for years to get guaranteed contracts. That’s why player options exist in contracts. If a player isn’t happy with his contract, he is supposed to wait until the end of the season before he opts out. Instead, Butler decided to quit on the team before mid-season.

I hope he gets traded to Utah!

Bout30man

I can’t understand why we don’t just trade him, why placate him. Trade him to the best bidder and be done with it.,Not trading him hurts us, isn’t that reason enough?

heat for life

contracts coming back have to be similar to his contract

Reality Czech

Mr Capology here. If another team, like Brooklyn, has the cap space to fully absorb his salary, they wouldn’t need to send back any contracts to us. The Heat are just not allowed to bring in even one dollar more than they send out.

Reality Czech

What I can’t understand is why Adam Silver hasn’t warned his agent that they can’t be telling other teams he doesn’t want to play there (or extend), so don’t trade for him. The league got involved with Lillard and agent, why not here? The situations are not exactly the same, but they are similar.

Big_guy305

Ikr, why cant he keep that same energy with jimmy, Maybe silver needs to get investigated, stern probably rolling over in his grave now.

SunManFromDogBone

There’s still hope for a last minute trade:

  • Bucks: Middleton, Portis
  • Washington: Kuzma, Brogdon
  • New Orleans: Ingram, Jones
  • Brooklyn: Simmons, plus two 2025 1st round picks or plus Cam Thomas and one 2025 pick
  • Utah: Collins, Sexton, Sensabaugh (Ainge will have 2-3 players off the books and will probably trade Butler this summer to highest bidder for players/picks)
  • Chicago: Vucevic, Ball & Giddey -or- Vucevic, Ball and Coby White

———————————————————————————————————————-

If push comes to shove:

Phoenix: Beal (plus 3 first round picks in 2025, 2027. 2029, plus 2025 2nd round pick).

IN ADDITION, as a sign of good faith, Riley should require Phoenix to also trade Ryan Dunn and Tyus Jones to Heat for Heat reserves and a bag of chips before the Butler trade.

———————————————————————————————————————-

If there are no other trade options available, give Butler 4 choices on February 7th:

  • Agree to play his ass off for rest of season and keep his mouth shut
  • Agree to a team friendly buyout (50% sounds about right)
  • Agree to stay home with pay
  • Agree to sit at the end of the bench, not play and keep his mouth shut -OR- be subjected to continued progressive discipline (suspension without pay)
ManilaHeat

Utah, Chi, NO looks good. Most specially NO. Well at least for me hehe. Riles we’re waiting…

2qbn

Per Tim Reynolds with this MeMe Butler news:

I’ve tried very hard to not give every five-minute updates, but will say this because there seems to be even more angst tonight than usual.

There are trade talks involving Jimmy Butler that are ongoing.

Will a deal happen? No idea. Tons of moving parts. But ongoing.

2qbn

Jimmy will be out of the league after next season OR he will be on one year deals. He’ll be rich beyond belief and still be a massive prick at the same time. If his jersey ever gets up in the rafters I hope it’s in ashes. Joy anywhere but here, right? Has left “my guys” to fend for themselves while he plays games while under contract. Kevin Garnett is correct. They fought for guaranteed contracts and Jimmy is going to almost singlehandedly take them back.

Reality Czech

Heat standing at the altar and the bride is nowhere to be found. PLEASE, I don’t want to look at the roster on February 7 and see his name still there.

ManilaHeat

Almost…Wiggins and Kuminga. What does Jimmy actually want? Bye Fox. As if it was really possible. Riles and Butler making a strong stand lets see who gives in

Alaska Emily

My bigger disappointment with the Fox trade is that it also took Lavine off the table. Fox felt like a bit of a pipedream, but Lavine could have greased the wheels for a three-team trade. Well, I guess he did, just not centered around Jimmy. There are now fewer workable options available, and that’s unfortunate.
