Tyler Herro to miss start of season with foot surgery

Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro will undergo left foot surgery and will miss the start of the season, Ethan Skolnick of Five Reasons Sports first reported Friday.

Herro, 25, is coming off the best season of his six-year career. He averaged 23.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists on 47.2 percent shooting, 37.5 percent from 3-point range and 87.8 percent from the free-throw line. The 6-foot-5 guard made the All-Star team for the first time in his career and also appeared in a career-high 77 games.

It doesn’t appear he’s going to top that feat in 2025-26, unfortunately.

Prior to 2024-25, Herro appeared in 72.8 percent of his team’s games, which is less than ideal. There’s no current timetable for this particular surgery, though the Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang revealed that it won’t be season-ending.

Nevertheless, one could assume he’ll miss the first two weeks — arguably the toughest part of the Heat schedule.

According to Chiang, his foot has been “bothering” him since the middle of summer. He also revealed that Herro “received PRP and cortisone injections in recent weeks in hopes of avoiding surgery, but the discomfort never subsided and surgery was deemed necessary to avoid more issues down the road.”

No matter how you slice the pie, this is damning news for not only Herro — who’s extension-eligible next month — but for the Heat, losing arguably their best offensive player from a season ago.

If you’re looking at any silver lining, the Heat own their 2026 first-round draft pick and they acquired Norman Powell. But it will also be up to Bam Adebayo, Nikola Jovic, Pelle Larsson and Andrew Wiggins, among others, to provide some semblance of creation in Herro’s absence.

This news will have a rippling effect. First, to address the elephant in the room, any discussion of an extension will now be entirely off the table. Even if the team wasn’t inclined to have that discussion anyway, this pretty much makes it official. Also, I have very mixed feelings about a player who waits until just before training camp to address an injury. If he had the surgery in mid July to early August, he might have been ready to go at the beginning of the season.
It’s too bad, because I was starting to come around to reports of a starting lineup of Bam, Jovic, Wiggins, Powell, and Herro, with Ware coming off the bench. That would create much greater balance, particularly with no real backup center on the roster at this point. I guess Davion will take Herro’s place in the starting lineup. I also wonder how close to 100% Dru is. That would help too.

Good post. You know what’s going to happen if this team starts hot. Instant trade bait. His waiting could cost him being on the Heat. Bizarre and interesting, the new Heat Culture. lol

Wishing Ty a speedy recovery. I suppose there are several other starting line ups we can try, maybe Powell and Mitchell, or even Rozier. And Dru is available too, so actually we may be able to get by for awhile. Even KJ might get a chance.
