UPDATE: Heat announce timeline for Tyler Herro’s return to lineup

As the injury update of Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro recently hit the NBA world, the organization has now added a bit of clarity to the All-Star’s return to the lineup.

The Heat official social media team announced all the details of Herro’s successful surgery to treat his injured left food, as the news of his injured ankle suffered in an offseason workout was originally reported earlier.

INJURY UPDATE: Tyler Herro underwent successful surgery today to alleviate posterior impingement syndrome in his left ankle. Herro is expected to miss around eight weeks. The 90-minute procedure was performed by Dr. Thomas San Giovanni and assisted by HEAT team physicians Dr. Harlan Selesnick and Dr. Frantz Lerebours at Doctors Hospital Surgery Center in Miami.

The biggest takeaway from the Herro update comes with his recovery time— which is said to be around eight weeks.

That timeline puts Herro back in the Heat lineup around mid-November, thus delaying his season debut with about 15 missed regular season games. Miami plays their 14th game of the 2025-26 campaign at home against the New York Knicks on Monday, November 17. That would be the beginning of exactly eight weeks since his surgery.

Keep in mind, any significant injury that requires surgery like this will not be taken lightly in terms of Herro’s return to game action. He will need to properly rehabilitate, get back into game shape and trust the process to make a full recovery.

If that November 17 game gives a rough estimate, the safer bet would be for him officially be ready for his season debut by November 19th when the Heat host Jimmy Butler and the Golden State Warriors.

Absolute latest, November 23rd on the road against the Philadelphia 76ers could also be a target if Miami goes with the more patient approach.

Herro seems to be in good spirits after the surgery, posting to his Instagram story a photo of him in the hospital bed with the caption: “Imma tear the league back down once I get off this weak a*s bed.”

Blessing in disguise. We hope. It will be a two-way starting 5…again we hope. DMitch, Powell, Jovic/Wiggins, Bam, Ware

That is not a bad starting five. Let’s hope this ends the Wiggins trade talk too.

tyler herro is not a good team player.he is a talented one on one type player.he does not make other players around him better and we know about his d.only thing his trade value is very low now so just use him off the bench which is the way to use him to keep his fragile body healthy.

wares gotta take the proverbial 2nd year jump.gotta be at least a 15 10 guy with 30 minutos.im not counting on jovic to take the jump i think pelle is the guy with better upside.jjj athleticism or lack of gonna be his undoing if one of 3 of these guys turns out to be a solid player i think heat fans would take that.so far that can not be said for any of them but its early

I have to admit, that assessment of our players is exactly how I see it too, including Pelle having just slightly more upside than the others. I watched Nico’s EuroBasket play and it left me still unsure of whether this expected improvement will be as notable as we hope. Don’t get me wrong, I will be thrilled if he makes a leap.
The other question is how much of a 2nd year jump Ware will get. Even if it’s not as much as we hope it is, he will still help us a lot.
I appreciate you sometimes saying what I lately prefer to only imply.

If Norm and Davion (plus Dru) create a ferocious backcourt defense, Tyler might be competing for 6MOTY again

Last season, you disagreed with me when I said Ware would not start on day one, and we know how that turned out. The idea of Herro only playing 18 minutes a game is equally absurd. Let’s see how that plays out. Highsmith played 26 mpg, Jaquez 21, Jovic 25, and you think Herro should play less than them? lol. On Orlando, former Heat G league players Jamal Cain and Orlando Robinson played 14 and 18, Tristan da Silva and his 7ppg played 22mpg. I don’t mind you feeling that he may be best coming off the bench, being a sixth man, but he was the 17th leading scorer in the NBA last season, so please try to be realistic. There is no team in the league that would only play him 18 minutes per game. And if you say that he gives up as many points as he gets, that means he is canceling out the opposing player on the other team.

I think those are excellent points about minutes. I didn’t realize how many minutes second teamers play, more than I thought. OTOH, even though Ty will likely play a few more minutes, I do agree Ty coming off the bench is still his most effective role.

I don’t disagree with that at all. Coming off the bench would provide a nice offensive spark.
On another note, I certainly have to admit that hfl is right about Herro being injured far too often.

The problem has been not enough offense, not the defense. You also don’t win rings if you can’t outscore your opponent. And I certainly don’t overvalue him. I have been as vocal as anybody on this site that it would be a huge mistake to give him anything near a maximum extension..
Last season (the 2024-25 NBA season), the Miami Heat finished with a defensive rating of112.8, which ranked as the 9th best defensive efficiency in the NBA. This placed them 7th in the league for points allowed per game with an average of 110.0.

Last season the Miami Heat ranked 21st in offensive efficiency with an offensive rating of 110.8, according to espn. They were one of several teams to rank in the bottom 10 offensively for multiple seasons, with their offensive performance hindered by poor inside scoring and low free throw and offensive rebounding rates

I can see all of that happening. This unfortunate injury could end up steering us in a better direction.
